Rumormill: Slate Belt GOP Told Brown Plans No Tax Hike
Last week, some Slate Belt Republicans were told that, when NorCo Exec John Brown introduces his budget next month, it will contain no tax hike. He instead intends to draw down the reserve, and reportedly will wait until next year before proposing a tax hike. Let me stress that this is only a rumor.

Isn't the reserve already drawn down? The time to increase taxes is now, not when we are really broke.

He damn well better not raise taxes. He told many of us at different times, he would not raise taxes. That also goes for the Republican council members. During the campaign one of them told us at an event, the Democrats will raise your taxes we won't.
So who do we trust?

Vicious rumor indeed. I'm not so sure this is true and it may be wishful thinking on the part of those who floated the tale. I think it will be a combo of both alternatives. A little pain and pleasure for all.

Of course he's not going to hike taxes. He's beholden to the tea bagger nuts that elected him. If he does raise taxes, he's gone.

The county doesn't have a revenue problem. The county has a spending problem. It's time to resurrect the Gracedale sale. The bids will be lower, for sure, but still better than a $10M-$15M per year black hole with no end in sight. The problem is Gracedale. Money is unnecessarily being spent there that could fix bridges and go back into the pockets of the county's working poor.
You fail to see Gracedale as a needed government provided resource, like the bridge you want to fix. Thus, it's a revenue problem.
"Money is unnecessarily being spent there" could be used to describe any service we don't agree with. I pick "low level drug offenders" and all marijuana convicts are being incarcerated "unnecessarily".
At one time that may have been true. Nursing homes are no longer core functions of county government in the Commonwealth of PA. 46 of 67 counties now get along fine without operating one.

You claim it's a spending problem. Governments have sold off assets for a short term cash influx, only to see the shortfall return farther down the road. Taxes haven't been raised to compensate for the increase in costs throughout the entire county, not just Gracedale. The revenue gotten from the sale, and the savings realized will be eaten up elsewhere.
