Democracy is Not a Spectator Sport

Scott Parsons marveled last night at the number of authorities, commissions and boards in Northampton County. There are 26 of them, with 180 people serving, most of them as volunteers. "I think it's great!" said the second-year Council member. As a veteran of borough government, he likely knows first hand how hard it is to find people who are willing to sacrifice their time to serve their community.

"A lot of people in this community take an active role," agreed Council president John Cusick. Always a teacher, he told a group of Easton High School students at the meeting that service on these committees is a good way to learn about local government.
