Lehigh Valley DA Morganelli to Announce AG Bid on Wednesday

Northampton County District Attorney John M. Morganelli will officially announce his candidacy for Pennsylvania Attorney General on Wednesday January 23, 2008 at 1:30pm in the Pennsylvania state capitol rotunda. At that time, he will also outline tell reporters why he can make a difference.

I can give you one reason. John, unlike few others, has been on the front lines as a county prosecutor for four terms. I may have my differences with John's stance on a few issues, but he's still the best District Attorney that Northampton County has ever seen. He has the state party endorsement, but that's worth very little.

To defeat incumbent Tom Corbett, John needs money. His most recent finance report reveals a $389 thousand warchest, which is competitive with Corbett's half million dollars. But Morganelli will need ten times that amount if he hopes to become the state's first Democratic Attorney General.

If elected, Morganelli would also be the state's first state prosecutor from the Lehigh Valley.

1) In the body of my post, I have a link to John's site, and yopu can make contributions there or can send by mail to Citizens for John M. Morganelli, PO Box 1426,
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania 18016-1426.

2) Now as far as Morganelli's Severson association is concerned, anyone who reads this blog knows very well that I think Severson's campaign style is bad for democracy. But I won't condemn Morganelli for his friendship with this political consultant. John and I can often be seen together at the courthouse. Sometime we share a cup of coffee or lunch. If he attends a county council meeting, he'll often sit right next to me. Does that mean that John Morganelli opposes the death penalty? Of course not. He's his own person, and a very strong one at that. And there are many things about Morganelli that you'd have to like. Chief of these is that he is accessible and does listen. He may not end up agreeing with you, but you'll never be able to say he did not listen. Considering how long Morganelli has been DA, that's remarkable.

3) I also like John's stance on individual rights. A few years ago, when he learned that several LEPOCO activists had been arrested for trespassing on a public sidewalk outside the Palmer post office, he ordered the charges dismissed. And just this summer, he voluntarily dismissed charges against a libertarian activist who insisted on flying his flag upside down.

4) We have a serious drug and gang problem in our cities, and this is statewide. A frontline DA brings a perspective to that problem, no otherwise seen in the land of midnight payraises. What has Morganelli done? Let's put aside all the task forces and other bullshit that are typical responses to this problem. Morganelli has brought in reps from local NAACPs and has asked them to help him. He thinks we need to expand educational and vocational opportunities for our minority youth, who are tempted by the gang lifestyle.

It is only a matter of a few years before the real problem of our cities becomes a real problem, everywhere.

5) From what I've seen of Corbett, I like him. He's a tough and very intelligent former US attorney who has a handle on official corruption. He deserves credit for that. But we need someone from the front lines because our cities are out of control.

6) John and I have different views on a number of topics, from his focus on illegal immigration - which I consider a waste of valuable resources - to the death penalty, which I oppose. And I definitely don't like his taste in campaign consultants, which he knows quite well. But he brings a focus that statewwide office sorely needs. I will support John.

Hey Bernie, Any word on when Sam the Scam Bennett is announcing for Congress? She seems to have dropped off the scope. Anybody circulating her petitions? Just curious if you know.

Looks like the Severson Family will be living well this year! All those nasty mailers and robo calls can buy lots of lifestyle!

Hopefully he will have a primary, so PMI can make the maximum out of this and do a few more John Doe mailings now that Morganelli has told us that it is OK for Severson to do that.

Even better than your father? How so?

My father was the better litigator, but John is a better DA than my dad or Spaz or Corriere bc of his superior administrative skills and ability to use the bully pulpit afforded by his office.

Morganelli will win in the LV and Scranton-Wilkes-Barre. He'll win Philly, too. But he needs to win sw Pa. or Corbett will be AG.
