Morning Call Doubles Actual Increase in Airport Traffic

A recent Morning Call report giddily proclaims that passenger traffic is soaring at the LVIA airport, claiming that 90,000 passengers flew in and out of the airport in February, a 17% increase over the same month last year.

Except it's untrue.

The Morning Call mistakenly Assad combined the reported January and February totals to get to that 90,000 figure (actually, the reported combined total was 89,208).

To make matters worse, the numbers are deliberately inflated. That's because they include those who take the United bus to and from EWR

The actual figure of folks who got on or off an airplane (not a bus) at ABE was 43,055 in January and 42,558 in February for a total of 85,613. This is an improvement over 2014, but it's about half what is reported.

"the board of governors and current management are inadequate"

Bingo. The blame also goes to the past county executives who kept appointing has been conniving political hacks like Jane Baker, Pawlowski and Rooney rather than competent citizens.

Their only solution is to continue to raise prices on their tenants (i.e. airlines and rental car companies), making the airport less competitive with each increase.

PHL and EWR should prepare to absorb more ABE passengers.

I have three trips planned through end of May: two through EWR and one through PHL. I wish they'd give me a reason to fly out of ABE. They don't have to be less expensive - just close enough in price to offset gas, toll (to PHL), and slightly more expensive parking. It's one of the the nicest airports that nobody can afford to use.

@ 1034. Some competent board members were appointed. David Haines comes to mind. And they ran him off.

How do you figure parking is cheaper? Ever since they did away with the budget parking, it's more expensive to park at ABE than at the discount lots at PHL.

Not to mention the frequency of flight cancellations. When Airlines have to cancel flights, guess which ones they choose first.

Although he is a nice guy, anything Tony Iannelli is associated with involves a certain amount of bullshit.

Our Airport Board that can not inform the taxpayers of the passengers has to go .

Bernie,

I'm not understanding why the airport is not releasing their secret report, since taxpayers paid the bill. The board never voted to hire that outside law firm, so on what authority or resolution do taxpayers have to foot the bill?
I think both county executives should start replacing board members.

Is it worth keeping an airport open for just 42-43 thousand passengers? Give me a break.

If I were King, I would shutter it and create some nice affordable housing developments.
