Stay Classy

In the wake of the death of Senator John McCain, there has been an outpouring of tributes from conservatives, moderates and liberals. McCain in his lifetime displayed a sense of civility that has all but disappeared. Even in his death, he has brought people together.

But not Authoritarian Donald Trump. He actually vetoed a statement that would have called McCain a "hero," choosing instead a brief offer of condolences to the family. He instead spent his weekend playing golf, bragging about his approval rating among Republicans, slamming Obama and ignoring a mass shooting in Florida.

Presidential historian Jon Meacham tells The New York Times,

"From Washington all the way through to President Obama, presidents have had to play a unifying and even transcendent role in affirming a sense of national unity. ... It has been and it continues to be almost unthinkable that the 45th president could follow in that tradition, and this is yet another example of his inability to bring disparate forces together even on ceremonial occasions.”

It is too sad. Check out the "comment" posted by the Monroe County Republicans about McCain. Some of these people are so filled with themselves and their rage and anger, they are incapable of any compassion or empathy for others.

This is the world of 45 and I no longer have any time or patience to entertain his rabid supporters. I would rather walk away and watch paint dry.

What is the source? The frigging left-wing, Trump hating Washington Post! Who is the administration leaker? One of their creative reporters? Even if it is true, so what? McCain did a backflip on repealing Obama and despised Trump. It would be phony for Trump to add to the suck up media's adulation of a politician they tormented in 2008.

Don't worry there Trumpster. Even your Trump hate broadcast news channel will confirm it eventually. Actually most republicans have expressed deep remorse. Your president can't. He is a man-child. He was mad at McCain for saying mean things and not following him like you do. If you make Donny mad he is mad at you and will call you names.

Thank God McCain could think on his own. Your Party is rapidly rejecting independent, rational thinking as well as science and facts in order to follow your great leader.

Trump and McCain hated each other. Three months ago McCain told the White House that he wanted Trump to have nothing to do with his funeral. Knowing that, how do you best honor the man? Do you honor his wish and say little? Or, do you ignore his wish and say much? I don’t know what I would have done in a similar circumstance, but I know this-no worthy person pushes personal hate beyond the grave. It is amazing that the media has spent more time worried about Trumps reaction to McCains death than writing about McCain, the person. OH, and the hypocrisy runs listening to all these platitudes from people who put down McCain when he was a Presidential candidate. McCain was a hero and a dedicated public servant. but, we need to stop there. He was no angel and certainly not the god that people are trying o promote today. Yes, he may be more like able than Trump, but a snake is more like able than Trump.

5:16,
Those politicians who put down McCain had political differences and never went on a personal attack, especially his service to his country. They never demeaned the man for being a POW. They showed him respect and he returned that respect to them.
McCain was a rational Republican Conservative and one I liked. As a Democrat, I will say that I will miss his leadership. He was a sane voice among the Trumpsters.

The legacy of Mc cain is much exaggerated among Republicans, Even many vets , while understanding his being a pow, did not think that much of his Senatorial service. Trump's remarks about Mccain came after MCcain began the insults. Trump also refused to kiss Mc Cain's ass. The left and the media loved whenever he stuck it to conservative Republicans, which he often did. He was a Senator much like Arlen spectre. Could have been a Democrat, just as well.

John McCain is the only politician I have a personal photo of in my home. U.S.Navy fighter pilot. Shot down ,broken bones ,captured, beat up and hung up bleeding. Father was Pacific Commander at time. He refused to leave the other people held at“The Hilton”. He gets a FREE PASS in my book .God bless this man . The photo was taken at the Center for the Intrpid ,a privately funded rehab center for wounded service members by Marishka Titus Michener of Forks Twp.an invited guest ,during opening ceremonies.

Interesting how everyone proclaims how they loved McCain, what a statesman, etc. But they had a chance just 10 years ago and he could not garner democrat or republican voters. he would have been even worse if he had not picked Palen. then tried to blame his loss on her. He lost in 2000 to Bush, he was not as much of an Icon as some would have us believe. He would have lost his senate seat in 2010 if Palen had not have come in to campaign for him. He would have lost in 2016 if not for Trump.

President Trump delivered some important conservative victories last few years. Incredibly important SCOTUS pick in Gorsuch and historic tax reform. When he delivers on conservative policy I cheer. But, he's also enacted dangerous populist policies like tariffs and he signed the awful omnibus debt package. On the personal and character side, however, he continues to far too often be a small and petty man.

It's no surprise John McCain in life and death was a target of Trump's pettiness.

McCain certainly wasn't perfect. His foreign policy record was one of constantly supporting foreign amazingly expensive and wasteful boondoggles and entanglements. But what politician is perfect in terms of policy? For me, rule #1 is that if a politician always tells you exactly what you want to hear they are probably doing that by a calculated design.

I didn't always agree with McCain but I believe he always voted his conscience. There wasn't a political bone in his body. He was a man of honor, integrity and of course well-documented political and physical courage. A Patriot, statesman and a hero.

McCain represents everything Trump is not from a character standpoint. So it's no surprise that this brings out Trump and his populist and identity politics worshippers venom like no other.

I get that the main stream media (and bottom feeding bloggers) are trying to make McCain a saint in order to diminish and attack Trump. I also understand that if Trump doesn't make a statement about McCain's greatness they will attack him for that, and if Trump does make such a statement they will denounce Trump for hypocrisy and for not adhering to McCain's wishes.

Never let an opportunity go to waste, after all, and the democrats have perfected that.

But let's keep it real. McCain was no saint, and in many ways similar to Trump. McCain helped fuel the animosity between him and the President, and certainly didn't try to "reach across the divide" to try to mend that fence.

So I, like most Americans, will thank Senator McCain for his service (at all levels) but leave it there and hope that he rests in peace.

I also won't blame the President for staying silent in spirit with McCain's wishes. But I will say that those trying to use McCain's death to further their own political goals truly sicken me.

Anonymous said...

Over the weekend, we were treated to numerous stories in the main stream media praising John McCain as a “maverick” and about our righteous democrat leaders lauding McCain for his “bipartisanship”.

More than anything, it’s the hypocrisy in these stories that’s infuriating.

If these Democrat leaders truly believe in bipartisanship, I’d like to see the following:

1. Barack Obama encouraging conservative, “maverick” viewpoints in the Democrat party and calling for an end to the vilification of democrats who stray from the extremist, progressive ideology of their party.

2. Hillary Clinton admitting that it was her campaign that paid to develop the phony Russian dossier on President Trump, and asking her fellow democrats to give Trump a chance.

3. Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer conceding they were wrong to jam ObamaCare down the throats of the American people without a single Republican vote, and asking democrats in Congress to help repeal ObamaCare until a bipartisan solution on health insurance can be found.

Of course none of that will actually happen. So excuse me if I’m skeptical when those same democrat “leaders” laud John McCain for his bipartisanship.

Anyone with an IQ higher than a hat size knows that the nation's political and media voices never coincide with what is best for the nation.

Let's imagine for a moment that McCain didn't get shot down and captured during the Vietnam War. That he went on to finish a 30 year career in the Navy. Given his "hook" to being the son and grandson of Navy admirals, he might have advanced to a one or two star rank himself.

He, in all likelihood, would never have run for political office. He certainly wouldn't have had a 36 year political career. Could the nation have survived without there having been a Senator McCain?

Quite well, actually. Instead of John McCain, a truly great man died today and his name was Neil Simon. Unlike John McCain his passing is barely meriting a mention. Over a career that spanned more than fifty years his writing for plays, film, and television gave millions and millions of people worldwide great joy and laughter.

Also, we are talking about common decency here. That is what mature responsible adults display. You don't have to love someone to show respect for the person and the service. This is so immature. The idea that McCain started it so Trump is not wrong to slight the man. Trump is the fricken President and should be above the behavior of a twelve year old girl but he is lot.

He is a vindictive and nasty little man. he is unfit to be president of this great nation.

Anonymous said...

In 2016, Candidate Trump said McCain was not a hero and he was correct as usual. This shocked a great many people, and it also earned the lifelong despise of him my John McCain. You see, it wasn't a good idea to say it because John McCain had built a 35 year career in politics and had so many political defenders but Trump was fearlessly truthful. The more I read about John McCain from multiple sources and over many years the more I realize that he was even more vile than I thought, he was a spiteful, vindictive man.

He was the son of two generations of Naval Admirals, born with a silver spoon in his mouth; was not really a good aviator and caused the death of many on the USS Forrestal. Unlike other POWs, McCain cooperated with his North Vietnamese captors. He did suffer crippling injuries from being tortured, so that can be dismissed as cooperation due to pain, and the fear of further torture.

I do see that his current family loved him and that was his greatest treasure. However, no one is reporting about his first family. Did they become irrelevant? He is being honored for his long tenure in government service, and his "bi-partisanship". Which means, he joined with the Democrats and did not represent the people of Arizona who voted for him as a Republican.

He despised President Trump to the end, and McCain specifically let it be known that he did not want the President at his funeral. Now when you consider that President Barack Obama and President George W. Bush will speak at the funeral. Has there ever been a public speaking event where President Obama didn't take a few shots at President Trump, often in that veiled, passive-aggressive way of his, which suggests Trump but doesn't name him? A bingo game ought to be set up right now for the timing of just how he will do it, because he will do it.

No, this spiteful man arranged his own funeral to be a political rally, He doesn't deserve all the hoopla he is receiving because he was no patriot, no hero, and certainly not a good man. Unless all those words mean something other than "as defined".

12:00. What should be noted though is that after his diagnosis with Brain Cancer, McCain not only held onto his office, but also his spite of Trump and those who voted for him. McCain could have made some amends by resigning his office, and burying the hatchet; both with Trump and the millions of Americans he labeled as "crazies" who voted for Trump rather than Hillary.

Instead, McCain chose to double down and remained a bitter, spiteful man even planning his own funeral.

For you idiots who are trying to make an issue about the flag at the White House being back at full staff, the flag is being correctly displayed.

It only goes to half-staff on the day of death and the day after, then goes back to full staff (in the District of Columbia).

In the Senator's home state, it goes to half-staff from the day of death until internment.

So please move on to the next feigned outrage.

Unknown said...

For those of you who can't believe that Trump got it right, here's the applicable section on the flag code. Hopefully, it will save some unwarranted outrage in the future.

Hoisting and Lowering the Flag:

The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.
When flown at half-staff, the flag should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to half-staff position. It should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. Half-staff is one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff. The flag must be flown at half-staff on all buildings on the death of any officer listed below, for the period indicated:

For the President or a former President: 30 days from the date of death.

For the Vice President, the Chief Justice or a retired Chief Justice of the United States, or the Speaker of the House of Representatives: 10 days from the day of death.

For an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a member of the Cabinet, a former Vice President, the President pro tempore of the Senate, the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives: From the day of death until interment.

For a United States Senator, Representative, Delegate, or the Resident Commissioner from the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico: the flag should be flown in the metropolitan area of the District of Columbia, on the day of death and on the following day; in the state, congressional district, territory, or commonwealth of such Senator, Representative, Delegate, or Commissioner, from the day of death until interment.

For a Governor: Within the state, territory, or possession, from the day of death until interment.

The Flag Code (which is a guideline) states those parameters. It is NOT law. DC traditional and precedent is for flags remain at half staff for anyone who receives the honor of lying in state at the capital as Senator John McCain is receiving. That's why since his death through this AM and until Sunday EVERY SINGLE federal flag in DC was half. Except for the Whitehouse. Which this AM was flown at full staff. That is until a few minutes ago when it was lowered once again to half. A mistake corrected.

Now that the White House is again flying it half staff it will be fun to watch the Trump worshippers change their arguments. We know they do not think for themselves. They wait to see what dear leader tells them to think.

Oh, tradition and precedent. You mean like standing when the National Anthem is played?

Here's the issue. You are correct that flags are lowered for state funerals. However, they are "offered to a sitting or former President of the United States, a President-elect, as well as other people designated by the president."

The last part of that last sentence, after the comma, is important. As far as I know, this isn't a state funeral designated by the President. This is a self-arranged funeral by a Senator. So while some might want the trappings of a funeral designated by the president, it might not be the same thing.

And everyone is happy now, right?

It's WRONG to sit for the national anthem for the same reasons it's completely WRONG for the President to have attempted to weaponize the WH flagpole out of spite. (which he later corrected and I'm grateful for, but doesn't change that it was the ONLY flag on a federal building in DC that went back to full mask for the entire morning and into the late afternoon)

So nice try at being clever, but you're completely wrong about your assumption.

I will admit to not voting for him in 2008 because of the war of choice in Iraq, and the thought of Palin being a heartbeat away from the reigns was unimaginable to me. However, I never questioned his integrity, or duty to country. Some thoughts…

“Patriotism is not a short and frenzied outburst of emotion but the tranquil and steady dedication of a life time.” Adlai Stevenson

Trump on McCain’s service during Vietnam: “He’s not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

Trump’s duty to country and his Vietnam “experience”? “You know, if you’re young … and if you have any guilt about not having gone to Vietnam, we have our own Vietnam – it’s called the dating game. Dating is like being in Vietnam. You’re the equivalent of a soldier going over to Vietnam.” Donald Trump, Stern interview 1993. Really, “the equivalent”?

For which he stayed surprisingly consistent four year later: “It’s amazing, I can’t believe it. I’ve been so lucky in terms of that whole world, it is a dangerous world out there. It’s like Vietnam, sort of. It is my personal Vietnam. I feel like a great and very brave soldier” while avoiding the “potential (STD) landmines” of the vagina. Donald Trump, Stern interview, 1997

I was a toddler, but in 1966 my father was drafted. Trump had participated in multiple sports, and received four deferments for being in college during Vietnam. Once he graduated in 1968, however, he was eligible for the draft. Then his fifth deferment for “bone spurs” in his feet. He would go on to take advantage of his father’s money and connections to get involved in business and continue fighting his “personal Vietnams.” Meanwhile, McCain who also could have benefited from his father’s position to get out of the Hanoi Hilton, refused while others Americans were still there. He had a very different “personal Vietnam” experience. Who truly “respected the flag”, McCain or Trump?? Which brings me to my final quote: “Wouldn’t you love to see … when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out. He’s fired. He’s fired!” Donald Trump

The protesting thing is a big loser for the NFL, Anonymous 8:39, and everybody knows it. Furthermore, even O'Hare has to concede that if Slackernick were really all that great of a quarterback, then he certainly would have gotten a new contract two seconds after his old one expired because all NFL teams are desperate to win all the time. At the end of the day, even Democrats who are honest with themselves know full well that they buy NFL tickets because they want to see the players play, not profess their political beliefs and/or philosophies.

Most people that love football want to see though game. They did not pay to see field size flags and military love fests reminiscent of Red Square. Who gives shit if someone stands, kneels or sits down for the anthem. The entire point is freedom. Actually the anthem should be played before anyone is even on the field. The military and the Defense Department made a deal with the NFL for millions. Now they own it and the problems.

If the owners don't like what a player does they can fire him. Contracts mean shit in the NFL. Why are you interfering in free enterprise between employees and their bosses. Stand up put your hand over your heart and ignore what other people do. Then sit down and enjoy the game. It is a game!

You Trumpy snowflakes get bent out of shape whenever your leader cries.

"You Trumpy snowflakes," says the Anonymous Coward. Hillary Clinton lost, 3:23 AM. Have another drink. Maybe one day you will get over the election result.

Simple test, if you have a son, who would you like him to grow up and become?

i'd call a person who sought five bullshit deferments so he could avoid serving his country a girly boy.
