Pittsburgh Becomes Largest US City Without Daily Newspaper

Over the years, I've often data-mined The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for stories relevant to the Lehigh Valley. But The Hill is reporting that this 232 year-old newspaper will no longer be a daily newspaper. After this weekend, there will be five newspapers published weekly, instead of seven. Pittsburgh will become the largest city in the country without a daily newspaper.

What I like about the Internet is that the readers tend to be active and often make significant contributions to my stories. A newspaper, much like television, is passive. You sit and watch or read without any opportunity to share an insight that the author may have missed.

What I dislike about the Internet is that there's such a rush to get a story out that sometimes, mistakes are made. I'm good for at least one a month, and am thankful when a reader corrects me. Print reporters make mistakes, too, but less often.

What I dislike about both print and Internet journalism is the emphasis on keeping stories short. Print journalists have a good reason for doing so - they only get a finite amount of apace. They try to pack as much content in with as few words as possible, a talent I envy. Though the Internet is unlimited, the trend is for stories even shorter than those you'll find in print, for fear that the reader will get bored if he has to read more than three lines.

It's as though everyone has ADD.

I tend to ignore this trend toward short stories  Some people are willing to read 700 words, if they want to be informed. I also do try to engage readers. I may write a story about a meeting I covered, and then get comments from someone who was also there, adding his or her perspective. This is what I like to call participatory journalism. I am beginning to see more of it on various Facebook pages.

It appears to be next to impossible for newspapers to survive in the future. It is generational, reading is mostly engaged in by those who grew up in relating this way. As for long stories, it seems people are more than ever scanners, who will only read so long and then loose their attention. We have twitter, texting etc. all very short, bad spelling and grammar.
Most younger people do not even engage in telephone conversation. There is also the cost of printing and distribution. Also some have become so biased they have lost half their subscribers. It is doubtful that electronic will completely fill the void after papers are gone. The big question, how do daily newspapers transition to electronic publication and make any money? They are trying, but have not yet found a sustainable model.

Bloggers-1.. newspapers-0.... I would not own stock in a news media... See where papers are going out of business.

did the Tribune Review stop publishing daily? If it didn't, not sure how Pittsburgh still doesn't have a daily. https://triblive.com/

This doesn't diminish the reality that papers are in a world of hurt... or the problems associated with that reality.

The Pittsburgh Tribune became online only about two years ago.

most newspapers are nothing more than democratic propaganda--left wing garbage president Trump policies are doing one heck of a good job he is turning this country around and the newspapers will not give him credit all they write about is fake news' they do not tell the truth about the plight of most cities under democratic control look at Chicago and San Francisco as examples.

2:08 SO TRUE YOU ARE Trump is succeeding even with the democrats opposition-and the biased media. we need more trump people in both houses and then we can really clear out the swamp then the biased media could continue on their way

"most newspapers are nothing more than democratic propaganda--"
You're right. I heard before someone can get their degree in journalism they have to take and oath stating their party affiliation. If they identify with Republicans they can not graduate. Some won't be admitted if they don't come from a city run by Democrats. Even the stock from which paper is produced must come from liberal company owners up in Canada. Yet no matter how hard they tried Congress is still controlled on both sides by Republicans. Even the president is one. How is this possible!

Sounds to me like you guys are taking a real beating. Maybe Donald and the boys ought to buy a bunch of newspapers. Maybe create their own Google-Twitter services since they believe they've been treated unfairly
OR
par•a•noi•a
noun: paranoia
a mental condition characterized by delusions of persecution... or of a serious condition such as schizophrenia in which the person loses touch with reality.

Bernie as far as short and sweet. Sometimes that possible. Other times I find many people don't know what you're talking about till you fill in some of the background information. This is why I rely many times on videos. Donald doesn't like words. So I'm assuming many of his followers won't read them either.

Trump 2020

The Morning Call is a left-wing rag. Most of their national news is from the Trump-hating Washington Post. Even their "conservative" columnists are anti-Trump. You NEVER see a positive story about the economy that gives credit to the President's policies. This is what "fake news" means. What they consider "news" is just a series of hit pieces. It is not that important or particularly relevant to anyone other than Trump-haters. It is salacious garbage from left-wing sources. That is why they are losing subscribers. They would lose even more if it wasn't for local news, sports, coupons and ads. The print media is dying.

USA Today brought us short stories that rarely extend to a subsequent page. Always hated it. There's a reason business travelers who get complimentary issues at nearly every hotel call it McPaper.

all the left wing newspapers are not stopping republicans from control so the newspapers should keep on their biased reporting--because the democrats have such a great platform--no borders no ice more deals like Obama makes more crime in cities free education for everybody including illegals free health care more and more taxes democrats love to tax and spend vote foe democrats see what happans

Marty Nothstein was the victim of an out and out political assassination gleefully done by the radical Leftists down at The Morning Call.

Clearly a healthy and educated population is something republicans do not want.

I think anon 8:46 was applying a healthy does of sarcasm. Seriously, these alt-right Trumpy conspiracy theorists forget that corporate ownership of media is about as far from socialism as you can get. But hey they don't let reality get in the way of their paranoia.
