Mayor Bob Donchez has scheduled a public hearing for Thursday, September 20th, 2018, in Town Hall, 10 E. Church Street at 6:00 pm. He and the Parking Authority want to raise the parking meter fee to $1.50 per hour, but the law requires that they first hold a public hearing. That should be a doozy. Here's some of the criticisms I've heard so far. "hidden tax" ... " Businesses will be the big losers!" ... "great way to keep folks OUT of downtown" ... "not expensive at all."
In Nazareth, it's a quarter an hour, except by my estate. Only I may park along my block. This law, which I decreed myself, is enforced by armed constables.

Sure, there is pretty much nowhere in Bethlehem that is more than two blocks from free parking, anyway. You just have to know where to look.
Stupid idea. Typical LV insider echo chamber noise. They think they are NY or Phila. and want the money. Problem is they will choke the golden goose as many local pols do. They think everyone is a preppie NY,NJ transplant that will not only spend $50 on a stale bread and ketchup appetizer but more money on parking meters.
This is greed and will come back to haunt Bethlehem and its merchants.
Donchez is the absolutely worse thing that has happened to Bethlehem in decades. He is a micro manager who rules by fear and intimidation. Most of his department heads are nothing but "mimi mes" Morale in City hall is at an all time low. He continues to cheat the taxpayers via the Hirko tax. He has completely ruined the recycling program, has no plan for the losing golf club and the roads are in terrible shape. Now he wants to raise another user fee so he can rob from that fund to pay for his mismanagement and lack of fiscal responsibility. The only positive is that he can't be re elected due to term limits.
This is a new one. Bob Donchez leading by fear and intimidation? Please. That’s just silly.
@9:47 - Go crawl back into your morning bottle of vodka, just silly to think that.
However, the addiction to parking meter fee's and fines has to end. How does Hellertown and other cities/towns survive without the fee's?
The cess pit of Allentown & Bethlehem are nothing but power for those with small penis's.
I had a real estate closing in Nazareth recently and was pleasantly surprised that I only needed a quarter instead of a credit card. I avoided the heavily-armed guards at the Lair of O'Hare.
As I understand it, parking meters were originally intended to keep cars moving in business districts: park for an hour or so, do your business, and move on. Somebody got the bright idea of making it an alternative revenue source for municipal government, which has gotten out of hand.
In the meantime, UGI's contractors have pursued me from Bethlehem to College Hill, turning the roads that I travel on into rubble.
Are they nuts? $1.50 isn't nearly enough. The best roads we have are under parked cars.

Bernie the best system for public parking I ever saw was in Corning New York. Some one from the Authority should go there and check it out. In short , the city enforces the following rules vigorously. It has a huge main street filled with many small shops. When I visited there were 2 empty store fronts and nearly all other shops were bustling.
Here is how it works : THE FIRST TWO HOURS OF METER PARKING ON THE MAIN STREET ARE FREE.This assures a vibrant down town with people gravitating to down town for lunch, dry cleaners, etc. After 2 hours you better find parking elsewhere or you get ticketed. By the way there is plenty of paid parking lots within 2 blocks of Main Street....jOHN STOFFA
Yeah that sounds real smart.
The meeting will be a waste of time. I am with the City for 15 years. Donchez will not make the decision. The decision has already been made for him. The meeting is only a show to make people think he cares what they have to say. I feel bad for all the business the downtowns will lose. I'm also waiting for all the property tax relief I was going to receive from the Casino revenue. Donchez will say that the money received from the casino pays for 50 police officers. That's his set answer. That money was never to be put in the general fund to pay for police it was to give all of us property tax relief. Donchez claims to be this champion of the people. Truth be told he can't make a decision and just likes being called Mayor. Sorry downtown Bethlehem but the rates are going up like I said the decision has been made.
