Updated: Dominguez Withdraws in State House Race

In an earlier version of this story, I told you State Rep. Peter Schweyer has withdrawn his challenge to Norberto Dominguez' nomination petition for the state house in a newly created Allentown district created specifically for Latinos. Dominguez, a Dominican, founded HALA (Hispanic American League of Artists), which has beautified ugly parts of this Allentown with full scale murals, and turned a dirty lot into a park.

I was happy to see that there would be a race decided by the voters, not some senior judge. But a reader just alerted me that Dominguez himself has withdrawn from the race. So the voters will really have no say in the 22d legislative district in Allentown, where democracy is clearly dead.

Since Schwyer has no opponent, his challenge is moot.

Have to think the horse is out of the barn on this. The blow back must have been fierce. This challenge was a big mistake, the Allentown D's actually demonstrated for everyone to see their true nature. It isn't pretty, noble, or at all altruistic.

" the Allentown D's actually demonstrated for everyone to see their true nature."
uh, Norberto is a Democrat isn't he? Or did you mean the entrenched politicos that both sides are so fed up with?

Schweyer will be the pinata in this race.

Do Peter and Darth Voter do all their campaign events together?

10:18,

The Allentown R's had a Latino Republican on the ballot last year. Hope to have more in the future. We aren't saving our choice spots for the "privileged" insiders.

Yet your establishment is working hard to derail Mr. Trump's campaign. he is the choice of the people but the Repu7blvian country club is against it.

The Mirror,

The Allentown Republicans are working hard "to derail the Trump Campaign". My God how insightful! You must have insiders at the country club where we hold our meetings, smoke our cigars and drink high end brandy.

This is a signal to me that Schweyer never had a legitimate basis for his challenge and was trying to pull a fast one. In fact, it was an example of systemic racism in which the empowered was using his money to keep the unempowered thumbed down. This is exactly what happened to Kim Velez. Dems intimidated her into withdrawing in Allentown, and it took a Republican lawyer who believed in democracy - Bill latt - to get her back on the ballot. When you challenge someone's nomination, and later lose or have to withdraw it, it's pretty obvious that it shouldn't have been filed in the first place. As Rick Orloski said years ago, "The people should decide elections, not judges."

"Rules are rules" screamed a Schweyer supporter. Well, this withdrawal indicates that Schweyer himself didn't follow them.

Was the challenge withdrawn before or after Dominguez withdrew. The dept of state shows he withdrew on 3/2.

Bernie O'Hare said...

Thank you for your comment. I was unawRe that Dominguez had withdrawn. Is it bc the challenge is valid, or did he lack the resources to fight? I am waiting for a statement.

Anonymous said...

Gonna assume a correlation, but his decision to withdraw, if related to the challenge, suggests he did something wrong and knew he couldn't stay on the ballot.

Anonymous said...

Did Dominguez have to give up is job to run ... If he did indeed withdraw maybe he found out he could not afford to give up his job while running ...

Bernie O'Hare said...

It could mean that the challenge had merit or that he lacked the resources to fight it in Commonwealth Cort.

8:12, I would think he would check that out before he started circulating.

Just totally perfect.

Once again Allentown voters get dumped on.

i believe that his nomination petitions were probably deficient, and indefensible, otherwise, some help from his party would have come forward. if i'm correct, accusations of racism were unfounded and unfortunate.

The help from his party should have been there when he was circulating, informing him on how to dot the I's and cross the T's.

scott, nobody, who ever attended a republican party event came forward to help me, despite requests on my widely read blog. truth to told, i have little, to no respect for either party in the lehigh valley. you should consider that your repetitive partisan statements diminish the public perception of your keen political insight

Mike,

How many lehigh County Republican Party events have you attended? How many candidates running for local offices have you gathered signatures for? Have you put yard signs in your yard, or asked your neighbors if they would do the same for local candidates?
The local party has a coordinator, Trevor seems like a very dedicated young man. Did you place any calls to him seeking assistance? You did ask for help on your blog but it just may be that your readers are not the grassroots people who do the hard and thankless job of getting people on the ballot.
I have helped many people get on the ballot but will only circulate for candidates if I live in their districts. We can disagree on whether this is legal/prudent but as I am the one knocking on strangers doors I get to decide who I think I can credibly help.
Yes both parties have flaws, like everything else in this world if one want to find fault one can surely find it everywhere. You provide a huge service to Allentown with your blog. You have broken a lot of news, and put neglected yet important issues on the front burner and effected real change. It is my opinion you have achieved, and will continue to achieve, far more with your blog than you ever could as a state rep. Who doubts that cards are stacked against those who go to Harrisburg with the idea of ending the corruption of self service and complacency that dominates our state capital.
Long story short, if one wants to be angry, your local party committees may provide ample opportunities. Having been involved with the LCRC for many years I can say we have tried to be there for candidates. Are we perfect? No, but we all do it in our spare time and in most cases there is very little of that.

Scott is like a pre-recorded partisan message. Why does the Republican Party thwart the will of the people and try to sabotage Mr. Trump?

The Republican party candidates debate each others penis size while ignoring the shrinking ice flows and increasing global temperatures. Sounds like middle school kids in a locker room rather than contenders for the Presidency.

It's too ugly to watch. Trump has injected the base nature of modern culture into our political discourse.

1:15 PM -

The debate "circus" is being created by the networks who present them. The networks pick the moderators AND the questions. The moderators ask only certain questions to specific candidates. They also manage the time allotted for back/forth banter. FOX went so far last time to double-up on the spotlights pointed at Trump's face. He looked unlike he ever did before, even just a few hours before in Florida.

The debate process these days are calibrated for shock effect (ratings) and propaganda. These are not really debates at all.

Here's the bottom line on the 2016 elections . . .

1. Promote open borders and overwhelm our nation with cheap labor and government dependents.

2. Each party keeps its incumbents in Congress comfortable and safe.

So now we have affirmative-action representatives based upon ethnicity, rather than qualifications?

Let's see. How many seats to the Hispanics get?
How many seats do Blacks get?
How many seats to Asians get?
How many seats to Woman Get? (Although if they are Hispanic, black or Asian, that takes one of the other quota, unless of course, they're gay, than they can be of any ethnic group)
How many seats do Gay Men get? (again, any ethnic group)
How many seats do Transgenders get?
How many seats do people of Muslim Faith get?

White male Christian or Jewish men can apply, if there are any vacancies left,
