Transparency, Easton Style!

At Easton's last City Council meeting, I'm told Mayor Sal Panto made some disparaging remarks concerning West Ward residents when he was blowin' oil over the peace candle. Now what I'm told and what actually happens are often two different things. So in fairness to Hizzoner, I filed a RTK for the meeting tape. Those are public records, although they often have a short shelf life.

City Clerk Tom Hess has responded to my RTK request. "[T]he City of Easton has no audio records of any Council meetings," he tells me.

As near as I can determine, Easton discontinued the practice of recording meetings when Phil Mitman was Mayor.

Even West Easton Borough records its meetings.

No worse than Bethlehem

Easton's a one-party town with no dissent. There's no need for meeting records. Everything runs smoothly. Don't ask so many questions. It's bothersome and potentially embarrassing.

What a joke.

every single local, city govt should make their meeting audio or video available to the community. this should be a no brainer, but then again, these local govts love when people have no clue or refuse to show up at council or govt meetings.

Bernie you need to either go to the meetings or stop listening to your informers. I was at the meeting and didn't' hear anything disparaging about anyone form the mayor or other members of council. HE did mention that the candle lighting has always been a community event for all residents to attend and not a increase in shopping night and he aid he saw a lot of people walking down to town from the neighborhoods. We all know you don't like him but your articles the last week have no factual basis. They are hearsay from a few others who apparently share your feelings.

I go to plenty of meetings, and the one in Easton usually conflicts with others I attend. I will be making sure I have eyes and ears at future meetings.

"No worse than Bethlehem "

Bethlehem records its meetings. Anonymity is no excuse for dishonesty.

Bethlehem Township certainly doesn't record their meetings. And they take it one step further by using a PA system that is so bad that people sitting in the audience find it difficult to understand what is being said much of the time.

I am almost positive that there is, in fact, an audio of the meeting. The PA system is bad, but a little better than it was.
