Can't We All Just Get Along?

Ever argue with an engineer? Forget lawyers, these are the real debatemeisters. What bothers me is that, not only are they usually right, but they're so damn smug about it.

I have a friend who happens to be an engineer. He also happens to be a conservative Republican. Whenever he and I argue politics, I lose. It really pisses me off.

After the most recent election, he sent me this poem, suggesting we make an effort to get along.

The election day is over,

The talking is done.

My party lost.

Your party won.

So let us be friends,

Let arguments pass.

I'll hug my elephant,

You kiss your ass.

See what I mean!

The Bush years have been very difficult for true philosophical conservatives - of which Bush is not one; McCain even less so. Bush's record low approval ratings are not a result of his opposition hating him (they always passionately did), but of a large number of conservatives hating him as well.

With this in mind, one area of solace will be to be the voice of loyal opposition. I think President Obama should be shown all of the courtesy provided President Bush. I plan to deliver my share with vigor. Hell, I'm sick of the guy's administration already!

You won kinda sorta fair and square-ish (the untraceable quarter billion of Mr. Obama's dollars notwithstanding). You've certainly earned the right to kiss your ass, which you'll likely be sitting on in the Carter-like gas lines that are certain to reappear.

If we weren't laughing, we'd be crying. Good fun.

You should add the fallowing words to your title: "....and take my word as the word of God?"
You preach harmony while still taking unneccesary shots at Sam Bennett and now even Mike Fleck.

Start practicing what you preach.

Let me get this straight.

I believe both parties should make an effort to get along. I must, therefore, refrain from any and all criticism? No matter how incomptenet or idiotic the person may be? No matter what the issue?

"Bipartisan unity" is no justification for weak people in government. Moreover, I am a Dem criticizing my own party, an equal opportunity offender.

I take it you're no engineer.

Is it posssible for anyone to be liked if the media and late night "comedians" beat you up every day and night for 4 years?
Bush inherited a recession his first year, then 9/11, and yes the Iraq invasion. However, for 7 of his 8 years the economy was great, unemployment was low and yes, we were not attacked. And, we have a much better intelligence system. Oh yes, Katrina. Does anyone ever mention the mess caused by the New Orleans mayor and the lack of any help from the Louisiana government. Only President Bush gets all the negatives.
In,summary, I enjoyed the great economy for the last 7 years, cried over the towers comming down, was kept safe for that period and made monetary contributions to the poor and needy. Not bad for a conservative.
But what the hell, it was a terrible 7 years. (Unfortunately we, also, elected a novice as president. Oh, well)
Bob
Postscript: I did suffer, for the same period, from two democrat mayors, but I guess that doesn't count.

By the way Bernie, I am, also, a proud engineer.

Boonie, you're a Hater. You have mostly embraced it. Go all the way. Your friend, nice to know God has made people that generous, knows you're a Hater and is your friend anyway. So, keep smearing people here in cyberspace and keep yelling at your friends. It's who you are.

I do hate government behind closed doors. I do hate pay to play. I do hate when people think they can buy office. I do hate when government is not accountable. I do expect elected officials to act like public servants, not the other way around. I will continue to point it out when I see it, no matter how much it bothers you.

Engineers are great if you want to build a bridge or a house. They are very organized and terrible in politics. People are the result of nature and nurture, that does not compute for an engineer.
Want to freak out an engineer, visit ones garage and re-arange everything, they go nuts.

No they are comfortable with the Republican Party and Fox News where everything is plain and simple.

This does not speak too well of me. My engineer friend regularly chops me to pieces when we debate something. Thankfully, he does not read this blog, and I have not sent him this link. Once or twice, when I was doing talk radio as a fill in for Angle, he called in. He would regularly tear me apart. I had to pretend I couldn't hear him.

You sound like someone who's never actually had a significant discussion with an engineer.

Probably get all your talking points from NPR and your debating skills from "discussing" issues with people who agree with you.

Democrats see the glass as half-empty and needing to be filled for the people. Republicans see the glass as half full and needing to be emptied of the people.

Engineers just see the glass as twice the size it needs to be.
