PPL Shutoffs Up 78%

From today's Wall Street Journal:

"In Pennsylvania, PPL Corp. increased shutoffs by 78% in the first three quarters of the year compared with the same period a year earlier. Shutoffs at electric utilities throughout the state increased by 20% in that period. George Lewis, a spokesman for PPL, based in Allentown, Pa., said the utility had been somewhat lax in the past but decided this year to 'reverse the trend and prevent people from getting further in debt' by cutting them off sooner. About 3% of the company's residential accounts have been disconnected for delinquency."

Excuse me while I go pay my bill.

Just wait until the rate hike hits in 2010.

Good for PPL! Why should my rates rise because deadbeats don't pay? Shutting off delinquent accounts is the American way. Anything else would stink of Socialism.

I've been "down-sized" three times, but have always managed to remain socially responsible and pay my utilities and health insurance. It's not easy. I'd like to examine the household budgets of those who can't pay bills to determine if I can cut any fat and help them keep their lights on. Cutting television is the first, best thing one can do. The electricity savings combined with shedding the cable bill ($40 - $50 per month, or more) are huge savings.

We live in a time where nobody wants to sacrifice and nobody wants to be denied or be told, "no." I get the feeling we better get ready for this to change.

There's that word again.

It's tragic how they are trying to make it seem like they are doing customers a favor and saving them money by "turning off their power."

Bernie,

And thats JUST PPL, this does not include MET-Ed (who really cranked up their rates) among others you can "choose" for power.

Let's not forget our rates are a disater since the Ridge years when the same lobby outfit that Enron hired for Cali-fooorn-yehah to deregulate utlities.

Deregulation fucking the poor while bank rolling the fat cats, the Reagan way.

Spike, while deregulation occurred during a Republican governorship, fact is it was a bi-partisan effort. Or bi-partisan clusterf%^&, whichever you prefer.

Yo Spike, that's my attempt at topical sarcasm.
BTW, the FIFTH Obama sign was stolen from my front yard two nights ago. Meanwhile, all the neighborhood McCain yard signs have been untouched.

Although I am a liberal, this description of the conservative philosophy is unfair and over-simplified. Obama claims we need to be less divisive, but that message has not yet trickled down to his supporters.

Spike, you drive me nutz, as usual. Keep it up.

dude... did PPL just claim to be saving people from debt by turning off their power? While we are at it, perhaps we can save people from drowning by shutting off their water, prevent explosions by turning off their gas and prevent water damage to houses by not providing fire coverage.

I mean, I get the responsibility issue at play here, but it would be nice of PPL just called it that and didn't try to tell us they are being so wonderful and kind.

Not to worry. Obama is going to spread the wealth so everyone can afford everything.

All who complain about PPL. There is a simple solution.

Let the government run the electric companies and they can provide 'free' electricity.

Sadly, this is the direction we are heading.
