The Lehigh Street Bridge, which connects Whitehall Township to North Catasauqua, is closed until further notice. According to a news release from Lehigh County, a truck collided with the underside of the bridge yesterday afternoon. I have no idea whether anyone was hurt. Lehigh County has contractors on site for repairs. It will reopen as soon as possible.
According to Nationalbridges, the Lehigh Street Bridge was first built in 1908 and then reconstructed in 1947. Before this accident, it was already rated "structurally deficient" because the foundations are scoured by flowing water.

I think this has been hit before. I also believe they had to construct protective tunnels under this and another bridge to protect pedestrians on the rail trail from falling concrete.
I wonder how mature the design is for the replacement. Seems like this would be a good use of ARRA money.
