You Will Soon Need Passport For Domestic Flights

Because Pennsylvania refuses to comply with the REAL ID Act, passed in the wake of 9/11, you will need a passport to enter federal facilities, including federal courthouses, starting June 7. And starting next January, you will need a passport for even domestic air travel. Instead of agreeing to comply with the federal law, Pennsylvania lawmakers have sent a letter to President Trump, seeking yet another extension.

Updated 10:30 am. If the cost of a passport turns you off, you can get a passport card for $30 for domestic air travel.

If we aren't in compliance then why did I have to bring my birth certificate (original, with the raised seal) to the DMV when getting my CDL renewed? I thought that was required because of PA coming into compliance with Real-ID. When I asked the drones at DMV about Real-ID they said they had no idea what I was talking about and PA has "no problem."

A national identification card, mandated by that Orwellian agency, "Homeland Security". I dispose everything about such a concept and that agency reminds me of what we fought against in the cold war in terms of "State Security" agency in the old Soviet Union. Driver's licenses are not the perview of the federal government and the concept of a national identification card is in pure contempt of the Tenth Amendment.

Where was DHS to prevent the subsequent slaughter of innocents in Orlando and San Bernadino and other terrorist attacks we've had here since 9-11. This is one agency I would be more than happy to see eliminated as a complete waste of money and an affront to our principles as a free society.

I thought I read in the paper earlier this week that PA was granted a 6 month extension because the D Governor Wolf, and R General Assembly leadership, wrote a letter to the Feds that will change PA's law to comply. So the extension is to get it passed. If the legislation passes, then we'll be given another extension to get it implemented, which could take up to 2 years. In the article, even some that had issues with the federal mandate and voted for our non-compliance in the past, said they will now vote for the changes even though still opposed to the idea, so PA residents don't face the consequences of your post.

It's a clear violation of the 10th amendment. The state and only the state is the arbiter of their driver license requirements...not the federal government.

Our legislature is totally worthless

I'm confused. What is the reason for this REAL-ID ? Why didn't we need this before?

"I'm confused. What is the reason for this REAL-ID ? Why didn't we need this before?"

This is the kind of thing that will happen when terrorists decided to use planes as bombs on 9/11. It is a prudent measure.

Ovem, the article is written with the latest extensions noted. The legislature should jostcomply with the federal law already. Not complicated.

Just a note, I had to get a new passport (because mine expired) and I read that there were going to be all of these delays for various reasons. They tell you that it takes 4-6 weeks normally to get the passport. I went in to the Post Office on January 12 and received it on January 24.

I hate bureaucracy, but I have to give credit where it's due.

"It's a clear violation of the 10th amendment. The state and only the state is the arbiter of their driver license requirements...not the federal government."

And the feds are the sole arbiters of who they allow inside their facilities and who they allow on domestic flights. So you are full of shit, just as states rights advocates have always been full of shit since the beginning.. Originally, it was a mechanism disguised to hide the desire to retain slavery. Now it is a mechanism designed to hide discrimination.

10:04, I got the same warning, but had it in two weeks without asking to have it expedited. Of course if we needed it right away, it would be three months.

If not on the drivers license then another form of identification to satisfy the Feds. The Commonweath should get off their ass and get it done one way or the other

Anonymous said...

So now since we have these pain in the ass driver's licensees to get, is the next step to use them for photo-id to vote ?

Bernie O'Hare said...

There is no connection between this and voting. It is also no greater pain in the ass to get this kind of license than the one you already have.

Not true, reported in the press just a few days ago that Pennsylvania has been given an extension to implement the new REAL ID license cards.
Need to update the facts here please. Either way , it's b.s. from Big Brother one again. Need this to get onto a domestic flight, but no proof to vote for our elected officials. ONLY IN AMERICA!

Thi sinformation is accurate and I have the appropriate links in my post. You are lying, which is now in vogue with Trump in command.

Anonymous said...

Then sir, as usual, the liberal press is lying as they reported !

reported on Lehighvalleylive .com by Tony Rhodin on 1/19/17. Info. verified by DHS. Suck on that for a while.

Bernie O'Hare said...

Moreover, if you knew how to read, you'd see there is no inconsistency. My story includes the extended date.

Anonymous said...

"I went in to the Post Office on January 12 and received it on January 24."

Normally you would have had to wait but note the date. You received it on the 24th and Mr. Trump was sworn in on the 20th. This is an early example of government shaping up and getting it right.

Bernie O'Hare said...

Give it a rest.

Anon 4:45, if you really think Trump is the reason you got that fast, I have a bridge over the Delaware River I'd love to sell you. $5,000 cash and it is all yours.

My license is up for renewal yet it useless to perform my job duties. Will I have to pay AGAIN for a real again because Harrisburg failed to comply since 2005? Can I write this debacle off on my state tax returns?

Bernie O'Hare said...

Gary Gorman, your comment is both factually inaccurate and off topic. It landed in my spam folder and I won't publish it.

Did you have to send to pa for a copy of your birth certificate? I hear that takes forever

Anonymous said...

So what does this mean for jury duty? Sorry, I can't show up because I only have a PA driver's license?

Bernie O'Hare said...

Ken, If you need a copy of your birth certificate, believe me, take a half day and go to Scranton to get it. It took me several months to get it online. I got tired of waiting and went to Scranton, and they had it for me right away. The best part of going to Scranton is I was able to stop at Coney Island for Texas weiners.

Stephen J. Barron, Jr. said...

If you do not have a recent copy of your birth certificate issued from PA with your parent(s) names on it you may also need to get one of those before you apply for the card or a normal passport. This caused problems when my family got our passport cards to travel to Canada and we had to pay the extra fee to get the cards done same day. The card is a cheap alternative and a good back up ID when you are required to show two forms of ID.

can i go to scranton and get my wife also without her being present? thats the 94,000 $ question.

Bernie O'Hare said...

I will find out on Monday. I will ask Darcel. She knows this inside out.

615. We now know everything this administration says requires extreme fact vetting. Trump said we must learn fom 9-11, yet none of the countries of origin from 9-11 are on the list. Furthermore, we now know the current plan is to TAX Americans to build the wall or fence.
