New Jersey legislators may vote to do just that, according to The Express Times. That's their reaction to the latest toll increase, which goes into effect in July. By a 5-4 vote last night, Northampton County Council supports that idea.Council member Ron Angle, proposing this measure, argued that the last toll increase drove businesses like Roadway and Estee Lauder away. Indicating that the DRJTBC was only supposed to exist as long as it took to pay for bridges crossing the Delaware, Angle pointed out that this agency is sitting on $400 million. "All we have been paying for is for politicians to run around and spend money," he said, noting it is a rest home for people like former County Executive Glenn Reibman.
Council member Mike Dowd argued that the resolution is premature and that turning these assets over to PennDot could be troublesome. John Cusick actually praised the Toll Bridge Commission, saying they were an excellent partner during his time as a Williams Township Supervisor.
Joining Angle in approving this measure were Ann McHale, Lamont McClure, Bruce Gilbert and Barb Thierry.

I believe the Easton school board voted on something without review and now they have a mess to deal with.

Roads and bridges are never finished being "paid for." They require maintenance, forever. Plus if you removed the tolls you'd get way more congestion. Worst idea ever.

Of course, John. Where there are no tolls, motorists routinely stop and form traffic jams for no apparent reason except to rev their engines, honk their horns and socialize. If this is the best defense of tolls ...
Toll roads in western PA and VA, and a number of states are completely automatic and require NO toll takers. It's time to privatize and get rid of completely useless toll takers. Toll enterprises are microcosms of bloated bureaucracies. They are feather beds for a lot of do nothings.

there may be a need for additional reforms as there were some 15 years ago but if PennDOT or NJDOT take over guess what, 17 more bridges will be controlled by the state's with some of the worst maintained bridges in the country. Right now, these bridges are inspected and repaired on an ongoing basis. They are safe.
