Lehigh County GOP Outraged at George Floyd's Death

From the Lehigh County GOP: The Lehigh County Republican Committee is outraged by the death of Mr. George Floyd, and the tragic events occurring across the country. We agree with President Trump in saying, "The death of George Floyd in the streets of Minneapolis was a grave tragedy. It should never have happened. It has filled Americans all over the country with horror, anger, and grief," Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Mr. George Floyd and to all those who have lost loved ones.

While we support the great men and women working in law enforcement who put their lives at risk every day to protect and serve us, we understand there are significant reforms which need to be made. However, we do not condone the use of violence by either side. We understand and sympathize with the protesters who are expressing their pain, anger and frustration. We stand in agreement with Connie Mason, Daughter of George Floyd when she says, "The violence is not the right way to do it. Now this (protest) is beautiful. But the violence, it won't solve nothing."

The Lehigh County Republican Committee praises and fully supports our local community leaders for leading peaceful protests against this despicable act. Through this tragedy we have been given an opportunity to come together as Americans, and fight for Justice and Equality for all. We recognize there are some who look to exploit this tragedy through violence and looting for their own gain. Again, we condemn this behavior and believe it sets back the progress we are seeking to make. We also recognize there are elected officials who look to exploit this situation for their own political gain. We condemn this behavior as well. This is a time to honor the memory of George Floyd, and all those who have been affected by this tragedy. There is near unanimous outrage between both liberal and conservative TV and Radio hosts, law enforcement officials and entities, and people of all races and backgrounds. This is not a time for people to score political points.

The Republican party was born from the fight to end slavery in America. After that fight was won, we have continued to work to secure equal rights for all. We embrace this responsibility and stand at the ready to continue this fight. The Declaration of Independence states "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Let's continue to work together in our community to secure these Rights for all by identifying and defeating racism and injustice everywhere we find it.

And yet they bring up politics while condemning politics. Clearly, when someone says it isn't about politics, they fear it will be about politics and the politics will only make them look bad. Go rewatch Trump standing in front of a church awkwardly holding a bible on his hand as a photo opp. Then talk about no politics.

It just proves the old adage..."words are cheap". I was amazed at the recent statistics of 50% of the American people live from pay check to pay check, and 60% of the American people have less than $1,000.00 in the bank. The Covid Virus has a bigger impact on minorities than whites. Why is that? Why does the Republican Party oppose raising the standard hourly wage rate so people can earn a decent wage and provide for their family. The Republican party has repeatedly attempted to cut programs that assist the poor and especially minorities. Yes,
"words are cheap". one issue does not a reformer make. We are all appalled at the recent cases of police brutality and the riots and looting, but don't cloud the issue. What has the Republican party done to help minorities in this country?

The whole situation changed last night because of the actions of the President. I hope what he did will end the violence but I believe, until I see otherwise, that actual results will be worse. Selective and quiet use of the military to guard key locations and installations is fine but sending combat troops other than those trained as police into the streets to actively confront demonstrators is likely to backfire. The violence is mostly the work of a relatively small number of politically motivated people using the cover of large numbers of people who have genuine fears and grievances. The military has seen this before in various foreign lands and should have learned that shows of force rarely work out as intended. This needs to be handled as much by winning over the hearts and minds of the general population as it does by any form of military like "domination". I wish the local Republican Committee well but unless reasonable Republicans as well as intelligent experienced military officials can reign in this President, I don't think this will end well for anyone.

Clearly the GOP needs to indicate that Trump's political photo op at St. John's Church in DC was inappropriate. So happy to hear religious men and women denouncing his actions. This country is on the verge of a dictator who spews hatred and bigotry.

Does the Lehigh County GOP support his clearing out the Washington streets last evening with rubber bullets, horses and teargas so he can have a photo op? Anybody with half a brain cell knows he doesn’t read the Bible, go to church and in fact he even held the Bible upside down. What a joke. That is your same conservative Christian president who couldn’t even recite the apostles creed at George HW Bush‘s funeral when this so-called Muslim president (his words) sitting a couple feet away had no trouble reciting it.

Black communities are being burned by thugs (Obama's description) supported by white trust fund kids and organized by funders who pay rioters to coopt legitimate peaceful demonstrations. Until local leaders act, minority communities will be devastated. Hats off to the Philly neighbors who gathered to protect their Target store from looters. I'm certain they yearn for racial justice. They also want jobs and shopping options in areas where those opportunities have been difficult to develop. It's time to ask mayors and governors why they're permitting and in some cases supporting the destruction.

Highly recommend the Grant miniseries. He was appalled by governors who continued to allow violence against blacks and their communities who hated reconstruction and sent troops to stop it. Democratic governors have repeatedly committed this sin and never seem to learn. These communites need to be rescued from their violence-promoting leaders.

This is a measured, reasonable, well thought out and cogent message by the Lehigh County GOP that strikes a balance of compassion and common sense that is relatable to all citizens. It actually surprises me.

Does this include tear-gassing peaceful protesters to have one's photo taken in front of a church, holding a Bible upside down?

It's an official media fact check...standing in front of a burned out church holding a bible is now more offensive than fire bombing the church.

The Federal Reserve building 1 mile away was unharmed.

We still have yet to see the alleged fake Federal Reserve note that precipitated the killing of George Floyd .

Clem, The person I admire more than anyone, ever, is Abraham Lincoln. I have read at least 50 biographies about perhaps the kindest man who ever lived next to Christ himself. One of his great qualities as a person is that he had the ability to evolve. And evolve he did when it came to race. By the time of his assassination, his thinking had changed completely from what it was as a young man or in the Douglas debates or even in his early years as President. One of his great qualities as a leader is that he knew just how far he could push something before waiting for public opinion to catch up. You apparently have not caught up.
