ASH Demo Advances in State Senate

Mike Schlossberg
He's moving fast. On Monday, State Senator Pat Browne introduced legislation that repeals one bad idea but substitutes another. Just two days later, his bill has sailed through the State Government Committee with a 10-0 vote. This has all the makings of yet another bipartisan blunder from the land of midnight payraises.

I speak, of course, of the state's sudden rush to bulldoze the buildings on the Allentown State Hospital campus. Never mind that this will cost taxpayers $15 million. Pay no attention to the state's own Historic Preservation Office, which suggested a combination of "adaptive reuse and redevelopment. Listen instead to Mike "Darth Voter" Schlossberg. He has no understanding of real estate but thinks demolition "will allow for somebody to basically have a blank slate."

OK, Mike, the bulldozers are on their way to your house so you can have a blank slate.

The one place a blank slate is really needed is in the State General Assembly.

Here are my issues with this bill:

Demolition Must Take Place Before Proposals Sought

Idiotically, the bill requires that demolition occur before proposals are even sought. Morning Call columnist Paul Mushick had written incorrectly that proposals would be sought with the buildings intact. He has corrected himself, but to remove any doubt, here's the precise language from the bill:
"Condition precedent to property disposition.--Prior to the competitive solicitation process under subsection (a) and notwithstanding any other provision of law, the Department of General Services is authorized and directed to demolish all buildings and structures located on the property, with the exception of a Commonwealth-owned air monitoring station ... ."
From a fiscal viewpoint, this makes no sense. Why do you spend $15 million to make $2 million? The only person who benefits is the buyer.

This is why I think the Bill should be renamed the "Fuck You Nat Hyman" Law. Browne wants to ensure that his own constituent and the only developer in Allentown other than J.B. Reilly, is screwed. That'll fix Hyman for suing and opening his mouth. How dare he exercise his First Amendment rights! Browne and Schlossberg will spend $15 million of your money to stick it to Nat Hyman.

Couldn't they think of better things to do with $15 million of your money?

A Committee With No Real Estate Knowledge

The second flaw in the Fuck You Nat Hyman Law is that it appoints Browne, Schlossberg and one of Allentown's rocket scientists to a committee to evaluate these proposals. This is complete bullshit. Neither Browne nor Schlossberg know a thing about real estate. They've already established their acumen by supporting the sale of the property to a Doylestown tax cheat with absolutely no public input. What changes now?  The way the bill is drafted, he can still submit a proposal.

My guess is they will still try to sell the property to the Doylestown Deadbeat unless Jenn Mann can come up with another client who smells a little less.

After all, this has nothing to do with the best interests of the public. This is all about lining pockets. Legally, of course.

If these jokers were truly interested in local input, they would never have agreed to sell the property to someone from Doylestown.

Forget About Zoning

A third flaw in the Fuck You Nat Hyman Law is that zoning, planning and other local laws to protect us are suspended during demolition. They may be suspended for the proposals, too, but that's unclear.

I support the notion of seeking proposals. Making demolition a condition precedent destroys the possibility of some creative suggestions. The Committee evaluating these proposals is made up of connected insiders who have already demonstrated they know nothing about real estate and have no regard for the public.

My guess is that Schlossberg and Browne have no interest in being re-elected.

Since when does the legislature jump in and propose a bill on the disposal of State property? Isn't that a function of the department of general services? Something's rotten in Denmark.

The corruption in Allentown didn’t end when Pawlowski went to the federal penitentiary.
It goes on and on and runs deep and wide.
Brown and Mann know how to game the system to the max and nobody is watching out for the people’s interests, nobody.
Michael Schlossberg is so offensive due to his cloying, fawning, “Look at me I’m so sweet and bushy tailed” vomit inducing style. His little covey of followers plays off his maudlin and pseudo sincere family man public servant social media persona.
The guy is a cynical bozo and disturbed narcissist as much as he is a second rate political shill.
You can even buy his book and read about his struggles and redemption, if you have a strong stomach and resistance to bullshit.
Learn how to vote twice for twice the fun at one low, low price.
It’s all for sale and ready for Oprah.
Allentown is a study in failed gutter politics and sleazy con artists.
Someone is making a fortune as the taxpayers get fleeced again.
It ain’t gonna end anytime soon.

Even Peter Schweyer is attempting to get a little distance from Schlossberg. This isn’t easy as they are both Capos in the Mann Family.
Funny how Schlossberg turns up at every Susan Wild event where there is the chance of a photo op. Look closely and you can see Congresswomen Wild cringing.
Lehigh Valley For All Suburban White People is working hard to develop their own stable of Boy Scout political hacks in training.
This might concern the Mann and Brown Posse if they could find it in their hearts to take the suburban interlopers seriously, not an easy task.
And then there’s the radical POC groups always ready to share their SJW outreach and outrage when the right opportunity presents itself.
The Republicans are largely MIA.
You can’t make this stuff up.
The future is so bright I have to wear shades.

Not to worry.
The Right Reverend Edwards is working and organizing seven days a week to be everything to everyone, and like Moses, lead the people of Allentown to the Promised Land.
He has no peer.
He is the new messiah of local politics.

I hope ROAR comes to Allentown.
We could use the comic relief.

Browne is a mean drunk and Schlossberg is a mental case. This is just about jealousy. They are both jealous of Hyman because he is a much bigger success.

Pennsylvania’s a criminal cartel.

12:53, the law would be an unconstitutional invasion of executive power, except that it does require the Governor’s approval.

Dennis, I am still looking into that, but was told those pieces were carved out and sold. Like I said, i’m Not sure on that point and need to do a little more homework.

I am very disappointed in Browne. I voted for him in the past but I will never vote for him again.

Anon 7:47 is 100% correct. Hyman was right, stood up to Schlossturd and Browne and they got pissed and are just jealous of his success.

I voted for Browne, once. Then I determined he's unapologetic drunk who's endangered innocent lives several times, and skated on a technicality. He's going to kill someone. I hope when he does (God forbid) that it's himself and not an innocent victim of his deceit and irresponsibility. I wish him no harm I also wish he'd stop visiting harm on the rest of us - and making us pay to pick up the pieces of his miserable, failed, dishonest, deceitful life. Private citizen: this post doesn't get made. Public servant: he deserves to be savaged for his shitty deeds. Fat drunk and stupid is no way to go through life. We should stop enabling this fat drunk and stupid man.

If Browne get indicted like FedEd will the NIZ law be recinded by the Governor and allentowns tax base be on the hook more than they allready are for Rielyville to the State taxes stolen?
12:16 pm the physical as well as mental heath is exibited by the way someone takes care of there body. Just from the public outward apperiance seems to me as this man should be hidden from the public sight to get voted in time and again, leave the campaign contributing developers name out!

If the bill is moving that fast from committee its a done deal. The Governors office would have blessed this prior to the committee vote given its breakneck speed. Wolf will sign so he can call in some favors from the Lehigh Valley tribe when needed. This is how the sausage is made folks, quid pro quo.

This way of demolishing state heritage would make Chris Christie smile.

Don't be like Chris Christie.

I hope someone is wearing a wire around these crooks. There's a career-making case here for an ambitious investigator.

It rubs the lotion on?

Is Allentown the new silence of the lambs movie backdrop. Elected officials playing the killers in some conveluted killing spree of the public.

Just called my local Senators office and asked for an explanation on her committee vote.
I should also contact the local anti landfill gangs and let them know the trucks are coming. Or the clean air council, food and water watch or hell just cut to the chase and sick super council powerhouse Tara Z on em.

Very sad state of affairs in Allentown, The town ends up with the most corrupt politicians for the last 50 years. Easton and no so much anymore but are two thrones between a rose Bethlehem.

This is absolutely and prima facie corrupt. To not even solicit competitive bids before the demo is insane and demands explanation.

It's not as if this property has ever been available to prospective buyers and sat idle for years. The first sale attempt to the Mann Mafia made it illegal for anyone but the doylestown tax cheat to purchase the property.

FBI, WHERE ARE YOU?

That said, it's awfully rich for Bernie to attack the Browne/Mann crew was he rode their jock in 2018.

So where is Lehigh Valley For All, Alan Jennings or Rev. Edwards when the community faces a real issue?

Anonymous said...

Yep, I think you have a winner in the "Fuck You Nat Hyman Law" name.

I looked it up. Community Services for Children owns their own property. It was subdivided from the state land.

There are many buildings that have no viable reuse that could be demolished soon. Unfortunately, some buildings have not been heated for decades. However, the most significant buildings (such as the Administration Building in front) should not be demolished at this time, and should await proposals from developers.

Bernie O'Hare said...

Thanks for this information, Charlie. There may be some rentals, too. But I plan to look into this.

I would tend to agree that some buildings might need the wrecking ball. Let developers and other interested parties have a look and come up with a proposal. There is no reason for the state to spend our money to benefit a developer.

Check and see if the states perposal even involves the removal of the subterainian infastructure of that vast complex too?
