Dent Endorses Kasich For President

From Congressman Charlie Dent's campaign offices. - Today, Congressman Charlie Dent endorsed Gov. John Kasich for president and joined his campaign as a member of the Kasich for America Leadership Team in Pennsylvania.

Dent praised the Ohio Governor stating, "John Kasich is a proven leader who knows what it takes to get things done for the American people. During his very successful time as the governor of Ohio and as chairman of the Budget Committee while in the House of Representatives, he repeatedly demonstrated his ability to bring both accountability and fiscal responsibility to government."

"Too many people feel that their voices are being drowned out by constant bickering and obstructionism in Washington. I believe John is the candidate who is humble enough to listen to the American people, reasonable enough to build consensus with lawmakers while maintaining commonsense principles and strong enough to bring real, effective governance to the White House. That is the type of leadership America needs now and that is why I am endorsing John Kasich for President of the United States," concluded Dent.

A life-long Lehigh Valley resident, Congressman Charlie Dent represents Pennsylvania’s 15th congressional district. He is the co-chair of the TuesdayGroup, a group of center-right Republicans dedicated to promoting fiscal responsibility and a strong national defense. He has been a leader in Congress in shepherding support for real solutions that promote economic growth and stability.

Said Kasich, “I deeply respect Congressman Dent and his efforts to advance conservative solutions that bring lawmakers together in Congress on behalf of the American people. Day in and day out, Charlie puts the priorities of his constituents in Pennsylvania’s 15th district above the fray of politics. I am grateful for his endorsement and he is a great addition to our team.”

the endorsement is perplexing, considering that kasich's campaign was effectively over last night, although he may stay on until the ohio primary, for his personal political reasons. sorry to see charlie make such a "safe," but meaningless gesture.

MM, if he has such little chance of being elected, why is this such a "safe" choice? He is the one R still in tge race for whom I'd consider voting. The race is for President, not reality show star.

michael molovinsky said...

bernie, my comment is self explanatory, while yours seems predictively defensive of dent. it's "safe" because he is endorsing someone who is essentially no longer in the race. nobody will be offended by it, except perhaps those who accuse dent of always being too middle of the road and safe. i never understood the criticism before, but do find this endorsement to fit that bill.

Dent is just being nice to his buddy Kasich. Kasich will be out by the time PA's primary arrives, so it will not mean anything and allows Dent to maintain a friendship while not casuing any damage to his own reputation. Also, Ridge endorsed Kasich so it keeps Dent in good graces with him too.

Dumb endorsement. Means nothing. Kasich is a good guy, but is a dead man walking in the primary. His campaign will be over in a couple of weeks if not sooner.

This is exactly why Trump is winning. Establishment R's supporting one another. This endorsement is meaningless.

MM, Thank you for the clarification. I disagree that it is "safe" for an incumbent congressman to select someone he knows is going to lose. I agree he has no chance, even as a VP contender. I think picking one of the few adults running as a R is a sign of leadership.

bernie, it would have the meaning you subscribe to it a month ago, but now, it well deserves the criticism that myself and others make of it. you are once again carrying water, which is why he sent it to you.

The shame of it is, Kasich is probably the most qualified person in the race for President than anybody because he was in the House of representatives for 16 years as a budget guru and governor of a state. Other than Christie, nobody in the race on both sides have not governed.

I think Kasich has a gameplan and viable strategy.. for now. I am a Kasich supporter. The strategy relies on northern states VT, Michigan and OH etc. I also do think he's jockeying for VP. And that it would be strategically smart for Rubio or Cruz to consider him.

Now, that being said. The viability of that strategy will become clear in the next 2 weeks. If a time comes that it becomes totally unrealistic. For the good of the party Kasich should drop. And again, I say that as a supporter. Eventhough he will not fare well on Super Tuesday I'm with him through Michigan and Ohio at least. Those two states he must produce.

I'm convinced many voters are just now learning about Gov. Kasich. That's not a reflection on his campaign but rather the 24/7 news cycle focusing on those who yell the loudest. Kasich has for the most part ran a positive campaign focused on results and issues. As people get fed up with the circus I think they will give Kasich a hard look.

MM, Dent sends his news releases to practically anyone who asks for them.
It is correct, though, that I admire him very much, primarily because he is an adult.

The “safe” thing for Charlie to do would have been to endorse Rubio. I question the reasonableness of anyone who would assert otherwise given the GOP candidates and the national mood.

And the establishment hacks rise once again.
Wasn't it jeb , the establishments choice, who said two years ago, "in order to get elected , we need to work around the base?
And how did that work out. BTW that statement was made almost 2 years ago while Jeb and Rove were plotting a run and with help from an exploratory committee(wink). Today Jeb is out of the race. Gov Kasich lives 1990's. He is big govt, big bank , big corp to the core.. This is what many in the party despise .

Just wondering what are some of Dents accomplishments, over his entire career as a congressman?

Say whatever you want about Trump, but this is the reality...and this is stunning...
BTW, I am far from a fan of Trump.

Ron Beitler12:02 PM-you are joking right?
This guy is cooked and flat out of cash. That is a fact, that can not be disputed, as of today. To call trump , gov Kasich and dent ,conservatives is a complete joke.
How has the reach across the aisle approach worked for the country over the last 20-30 years? name one issue where the democrats "reached " across the aisle in the last 7 years or so? Crickets...and nobody knows what trump is other than a guy who flip flops/evolves,(wink) more than John Kerry, obama and hillary clinton combined.
Americans ,are sick and tired of both parties and the mess both parties created.
Moderates have been getting crushed by the dems. McCain, Romney , Dole , Bush Sr.,ring a bell?

again, Dent missed the mark.

2:57, Dent could be right on the nose. The correct thing for Dent to do would be to go with the Trumpies, who are anti-establishment, or Rubio, who is in the R mainstream. He chose to pick the person he considers most qualified for the job.

We may be looking at jockeying for the Vice Presidential nominee.

Bernie O'Hare said...

2:10, Anyone who does any jkind of research into Dent will quickly realize that he has been quite effective as a voice of reason in a body of government that is surely lacking in that quality. He has been the grown-up.

He is the only major candidate I will endorse. He is fairly moderate, has served as a governor (which for me is an important mark), he wrote major legislation when he was in the house of reps, and he doesn't get upset when something doesn't go his way (see the recall vote on his collective bargaining changes). He is the best candidate the R's have, but they wasted all there energy on the Three Stooges (no disrespect meant to Larry, moe, and curly).

Charlie is playing it milk toast safe as is usual. Instead of sitting on the sidelines Charlie... jump into the game... take a stand and endorse someone who might at least of a scintilla of a chance of getting the nomination like Cruz or Rubio. If you don't like Trump, I get it.

Bet he will get a big hug for this endorsement.

Kasich seems to be the only sensible republican left in the race. Cruz's govt shutdown hurt the economy. Trump's irrational rant on the Pope without even getting the facts first was appalling. His provoking comments were appalling. This is the Presidency of the United States. Not pro wresting entertainment.

I endorse Jim Gilmore ---Who cares!! ----Time to drain the swamp and watch where they slither. Dent has been in the swamp for many years, other than annoying robo calls around election time, I have no idea of any accomplishments of this man. One loser backing another.

You say an effective voice of reason, that is if one wants no change in Government, Dent is a small voice of the ineffective Rs who simply watched and excused themselves from the last 7 years, while blaming others in their party for failing to make any meaningful stand in Government. More than 7 years if you include Bush years and his policies of large government and deficit spending for which Dent willingly went along. Dent's endorsement today proves, Dent simply does not get the pulse of America today. The R's created the opportunity for Obama, by not following what they said they would do and now they, with the D's, created Trump, by elevating political distrust. Trump is an even bigger guess but he has his pulse on the political BS! While guessing about Trump is not good, those R voices have even less creditability. They all are part of the problem, which is why folks will roll the dice with Trump!

"Dent's endorsement today proves, Dent simply does not get the pulse of America today."

You apparently misunderstand endorsements. They do not exist do that the endorser can tell people what they already think. They exist so that the endorser can sway undecided voters and challenge voters who have already made up their mind.

So much ado over nothing.

Dent should officially switch to Democrat, because his record proves that he is one.

6:53 pm said: "Cruz's govt shutdown hurt the economy."

Please tell me the great economic harm to the economy because of this "shutdown". Social security checks still went out, and ESSENTIAL services continued.

In reality, the government was no more shut down that it is during any holiday period.

I seem to remember it was Obama who was the one trying to harm regular people, by cordoning off access to open-air veterans monuments in DC and wide-open national parks in the west.

Dent's endorsement - means nothing. Kasich was the best of the lot, and is the victim of a reality tv star. Amazing, but true.

Anonymous said...

Molovinsky - Why is Rubio "in the race" but Kasich isn't? Rubio hasn't won squat. Dent isn't going to endorse Cruz or Trump. Are you paying attention at all?

Anonymous said...

This is the greatest political meltdown ever and its all the fault of the overreaching, radical, right wing that believes they have some sort of majority. Newsflash: you are right wing nuts and everyone - even your fellow Republicans - are embarrassed of your support for "pure" conservatives like Cruz or xenophobic reality show stars. But continue on - you are ensuring the Whitehouse goes to the Clintons again. It will be SO EASY to defeat Trump in the general - even Repubs are bailing and considering voting for Clinton for the sake of the country. ALL of the country, not just hothead xenophobes and politically uninformed rubes.

Dent is just sucking up to the establishment, which he is one of. These are the guys who have lived the good life and who have no beliefs in anything other than sustaining the good life for themselves. After this year, the political environment will never be the same again and they will still not understand why.

Bernie O'Hare said...

If that were so, he would go with Rubio.

837, the closing of monuments was an metaphor for how disastrous this shut down woule be. The firm I work for agonized for weeks over the stalemate and looming shutdown. It created uncertainty in gainful employment for current staff. It halted plans for future employment. Projects got delayed while federal workers received time off work backpay. The stock market reacted negatively. Our 401Ks saw a setback. Tap 529 plans saw an unnecessary setback. Public pensions invested in the market saw a setback. My employer mad it thought the Bush great recession and sustained staff. The shut down so changed that. Some staff were sent home without pay or were forced to take accrued vacation. Benefit accruals suffered. In total, I think we had a 10% reductiin in staff from a restructuring and a shutdown most definitely had an affect here. We made it through the recession but could not absorb the shutdown. Meanwhile, federal workers were sent home and then provided back pay with no affect to their annyal salAries or benefit accruals for 16 days of unproductive leave with pay. The recovery was stunted once again by the GOP. Standard and Poors stated that $24B was taken out of the economy and shaved at leat 0.6% off on annualized 4th quarter GOP growth. SO YES THE govt shut down gimmick by Republicans destin to hurt Obama did infact hurt everyday families. Glad you received your check.

REMEBEMER, the adverse affect of tbe Government Shutdown when you vote this November.
