Hunter Brings a Voice For Our Children

Deb Hunter, a teacher at Northampton High School, is a second-time Northampton County Council candidate. She is one of eight Democrats seeking five at-large seats. She served on the Nazareth school board for ten years. In her first run for County office four years ago, she faced a public that was angry at a Democratic Congress, and she came up short. But now, the pendulum is going in her direction.

Attractive and well-spoken, she recently spoke to a group of Easton Democrats. (VIDEO HERE). Hunter, like fellow candidate Christen Borso, is a graduate of Northampton County's inaugural Citizens' Academy. She also served on the Gaming Authority and is a Bethlehem Human Relations Commissioner.

Part of her training with the Citizens' Academy included a visit to Gracedale, the County's nursing home. "That institution is everything that I was led by my grandmother to believe that it was," she stated. "The voters spoke, very clearly, two years ago as to what priorities they have, and Gracedale is certainly one of them."

She also spoke in support of the county's open space program, which she believes is going in the right direction.

With respect to a centralized human services building, she attended meetings and actually listened to two County employees, who described deplorable conditions at the Wolf building. Though bothered that a major anchor is leaving Easton, she supports the concept. She cautions that it needs to be designed so that the workers in it can use "best practices" with the citizens they serve.

Hunter also described a visit to the Donnelly Family Center, a regional effort with Lehigh County. Thsi center cares for children born into drug addiction. "We only have eight kids there," she pointed out. "Lehigh County has thirty-two. I want to know why we don't have more of a commitment to our infants."

She has also toured the prison. "We'll be sticking a lot more money into that end if we don't take care of our kids at the front end," she observes.

It is very clear that Hunter has spent a great deal of time familiarizing herself with County issues. I am also impressed with the fiscal argument for taking care of our most precious asset - our children. It's the same argument she made in 2009.

I thought Hunter deserved a seat then. Over the last four years, she's become even better.

Deb stands head and shoulders above the other County Council candidates. She has a great future in politics if she wants it.

Hunter was appointed to the gaming authority whe I left. She was to be thr Nazareth COG represenative. I do no know if she went to the gaming meetings, but she never showed up at one single COG meeting. NOT ONE

Nazareth Area Council of Governments represents 10 communities and 2 school distrcts and over 65,0000 voters, We never had a shot at a grant for them, becasue our advisor was a no show.

She's hot and has my vote.

Another tax raising addict. She needs rehab; not another chance to screw taxpayers.

Nothing new or original in her speach. Lets talk about the children and other feel good stuff and never really say anything at all

What's wrong with the Republican Party - Dottie Niklos. Just read the minutes of the gaming authority and Ms. Hunter was at all the meetings and was even Vice Chair. The communities she represented appeared to receive many grants. Too bad Dottie can't tell the truth.

Dottie, You are mistaken. Deb Hunter attended those meetings. She stepped down when she moved to Bethlehem. I know you would not intentionally mislead us. Incidentally, the Nazareth are should not have Tenge on that authority. He should not be on any county board. I am not thrilled with a township manager who goes on fishing trips with Lou Pektor dispensing gaming funds.

She is a sharp cookie. The only thing she has working against her is her ballot position. I hope she gets her name out there.

She talks about all kinds of new programs, yet has no solutions as to how to pay for the ones we have. Another talking Dem with no real ideas but pretty words.

Loved the taxes way of doing things while on the Nazareth School Board.

She never attended the Nazareth COG meetings. She was certainly not an advocate for the region she was appointed to represent.

She is quite good. Of course the Tea Party types won't go for her. I wish we had her running in Lehigh County.

Just what the county needs another teacher, Yeah!!!

What would government be without them.

Another tax addicted teacher. Next please.

What do her looks have to do with anything? Attractive and well spoken? Her hair stands on end and she blithers in inane generalities. She seems a perfect political imbecile whose friends should hold an intervention involving a comb.

Bernie O'Hare said...

Her looks are irrelevant. You are right to take me to task for that. But being well spoken is relevant.

How about that?

Dottie Niklos is now concerned with attendance. Didn't seem all that important when it is her friends Teg Hughes, Melanie Morgan, and Bryan Monahan missing meetings. She also can't seem to get the FACTS straight and just decides to spew BS about someone's public record.

Seems like typical establishment Republican party tactics.

Hipocryte of the highest level!

Now we hear from the tea party extremists w/in the NorCo GOP. Instea of being concerned about real racists like MezzaKKKappa, go after Dottie Niklos and other party stalwarts.

I am somewhat late to the discussion due to other commitments tonight, but I was impressed when I had an opportunity to speak with her and question her about a number of issues, but of particular interest to me was Gracedale. She understands from both a business perspective and quality of care perspective the issues, and the questions to ask. She appreciated the threefold nature of effective management, patient care, and labor perceptions--especially after give backs. Those who claim to be defenders of Gracedale, yet vote to waste money in ways counter to its long-term solvency and hence counter to the voter referendum to "save Gracedale" in order to win a few perceived primary votes should take note of her mix of pragmatism and idealism. I suspect that her experience on "both sides of the table"--both as a teacher as well as a School Board member--gives her insightful perspective with issues such as Gracedale. I came away with the impression that she can appreciate the nuances and complexities of issues.

One thing anon 5:22 neglected, is that 50 year old women wearing tight mini-skirts isn't cool. Even if they are liberal Dem's.

Lighthouse, I might point out that Hunter was a board member before she was a teacher.

When teachers are getting layed off left and right, how does an older second career person get a sweet history teaching job in a public school? Must be nice to have those insider connections.

I prefer real world candidates.

Anonymous 11:26...Gee she seems like she was in the "real workforce" but that doesn't count and maybe she was teaching long before the layoffs.....hmm...seems like you're a person who doesn't think very deeply...glad you're not running.

Yeah, a real stal-WART on the ass of the Republican party seems about right. She even smells stale!

Lighthouse, so she is a teacher, and has no business experience, and u think she is good for the position, Why? Really I want to know what she brings to the table? Besides grand ideas and hindsight?

8:20, "no business experience" is your sole reason for not supporting her?

That statement reflects a certain bias and ignorance. You would have to ask her yourself, but I believe she did indeed work in the world of business before teaching. Strike one.

Srike two, using your logic, Ronald Reagan never should have been elected Governor of CA because his experience was as an actor, and (heaven forbid) a union president (SAG). Eisenhower, also, had no "business experience." Were they bad leaders incapable of having good ideas, and poor leaders because they had no business experience? I certainly do not think so. I greatly respect both of them. Meanwhile the darling of the Tea Party crowd is Donald Trump, who while rich, has gone bankrupt a few times in his "business experience" and would make a terrible elected official.

Lighthouse is a fan of old women in mini skirts. Probably some weird teacher fantasy that is unresolved.

Funny, but no... However, to bring closure, since there was no real discussion on the substance of my original comments... I have opinions-- sometimes expressed on LVR-- on a lot of political candidates, parties, and issues. But I will check out of this post's dialog and just suggest you ask the candidates your own questions. Between this year's County Council and Exec races, there are some I think are competent and should be elected. With others my vote will sadly be more a vote against opponents than for particular candidates. I vote on the totality of my impressions, not whether I agree on every single issue (an impossibility), nor whether they are a D or an R. Regardless, with a few notable exceptions, I wish this year's crop was stronger on both parties.

Agree with Lighthouse....Anon 2:08's real issue is that she just didn't smile at him enough.

She did attend the Stoffa government academy so that must make her qaulified.
