ZZ Top to Join Morning Call Editorial Board in '08

Allentown: As part of a campaign to attract new readers, the Morning Call today announced that Houston-based blues rock band ZZ Top is joining its editorial board. Publisher Tim Kennedy proudly announced, "I ordered my opinion writers to grow beards or moustaches, but it just wasn't catching on. Besides, Micek keeps complaining about a hormone deficiency. This should do the trick."

The band has already submitted some zingers, according to Kennedy, with headlines that correspond to past hit singles, like "Local Cops - Arrested for Driving While Blind" and "Callahan - Sharp Dressed Man."

what isn't funny, is that the morning call is a knowing beard for the pawlowski administration. an article in todays paper blames an $8 million bond interest increase on the watchdogs. in reality, if anything, the delay saved the taxpayers money(4million). in that period of time interest rates declined and as tax time approaches and people review their financial situation, there is an upsurge in demand for tax-free instruments to lessen the pain in the following year. the city intentionally understated the interest to 48mil., the citizens estimated 60, and the final number was 56; and the morning call once again participated in a deception.

MM,

Interest rates on bonds have gone up, not down. Hilliard's statements are inaccurate.

Remember bond interest rates and mortgage interest rates are not the same. The mortgage crisis has made bonds more attractive to investors, creating demand and increasing interest rates. Manmy muncipalities, especially out west, are delaying projects for this reason.

bernie, i just checked bloomberg.com and it appears to me that rates are up slightly from 2 weeks ago, but still down almost a half point from that of 6 months ago, which was more of the original time frame, before the legal action. however, i am checking on AAA, of which allentown has not been for years, and there is a current storm over insurance, but i think we will have to compare the BBB rate last march with the current one to know the real answer, as opposed to relying on either hilliard

Sweet Jeezus, Molovinsky, would you please make a New Year's Resolution to get a sense of humor?! Or move to Arizona with all of the other Allentown-haters? Your song is old, tired and pathetic.

As for the bond in Allentown, this is just more evidence that the (Joe) Hilliard Gang is not a group of concerned watchdogs. They are another pathetic group of whiners who have not been right yet. Not even once. All they have done is cost the city about $50,000 or more in legal fees to defend lawsuits that have unanimously been rejected by the courts, the state, and anyone else with half a brain who looks at them.

Does city government need scrutiny? Of course. But let's have intelligent scrutiny (Pam Varkony is a very good example here. She's articulate, bright and knows what to challenge and what not to challenge. Usually) not a bunch of crybabies who have no jobs and nothing better to do with themselves than whine about Ed Pawlowski.

Bernie, your post was hilarious. I hear Micek is shopping the costume shops this weekend for a fake beard so he can fit in. ;->)

curmudgeon, another basher from the casey tag team, who is short on facts. in the bond article, at the end, larry hilliard(pawlowski finance director) concedes the rates are lower now than when originally intended(beginning of september). i would think by monday evening o'hare and i will agree if the rates are up or down. the nay-sayers represented themselves in court, pawlowski could have easily used the city solicitor, but instead outsourced the case to the most expensive lawyers in allentown, completely unnecessary, he cost the taxpayers money, not the citizens. furthermore, the state CED rejected pawlowski request to refloat 35mil, and restricted it to 22, or the bond payback would be close to 80 million. last, but not least, unrelated, pawlowski's new city home inspection for all sales after feb.1, is as of yet unknown by the public, i believe they will not be happy about it, and will appreciate a whiner bringing it to their attention. what is pathetic is you pretend to be a political blogger, your uninformed, and you criticize those you question the system. it's sad for pawlowski to refer to citizens as nay-sayers, but with IDIOTS like you he can get away with it.

MM:

I hope you plan on challenging the almost identical inspection laws in Whitehall, Bethlehem, and several other local municipalities since they are as much your home as Allentown is.

Doesn't your beloved South Whitehall have a home inspection law? I suggest you clean the laundry in your own home before you complain about your neighbors.

I hear the Stoffa songlist features 'FUZZBOX VOODOO' AND 'MY MIND IS GONE'. I guess that is better than 'OLD MAN'.

dear anon 7:33 and 7:34, the fact that other municipalities have it, or i do not currently reside there, does not make it more justified. this law was passed behind the backs of allentown homeowners on the same evening the police officer was fired, and there has been no article by the morning call. i believe the average allentown homeowner would like to know that the city will now be involved in the sale of his house. i am not asking you for a donation of your money or energy for this cause.

Mike M, I've made it known back channel I have no quarrel with you giving your opinion, as misguided as it may seem to be, but you continue to use my name in bashing others.
What is the purpose?
you call Curmudgeon, "Another basher from the Casey tag team."

I have no tag team or posse, but you are so hard up for people to pay attention to you and make you feel important you keep launching these nissives. Warren was right, this is sad.
Why you want this war with me I don't know, but you are screwing with my new year's reasolution to be a "kindler, Gentler", Blogger.

Mike, you want to hold everyone else up to ridiculous amounts of scrutiny, I wonder how you would bear up under the weight of some.

It's one thing to be a watch dog, another entirely to be a rabid pit bull with no purpose.

I've tried reasoning with you, and I've talked to the rest of the gang, trying to get them to ignore you. Nothing seems to appease you.
Just explain publicly where everyone can read it why you have to throw my name into the mix every time someone disagrees with you. Please?

Merci, monsiur. That's how the post was intended.

chris, that is a fair question; first of all, read over your comment, do you see all the real and implied insults to me? when you and i had our disagreement this summer(should i phone martin's assistance and ask if he will confirm your allegations?), everyone of your "contributors" without exception, took shots at me. some, such as bats, clearly stated they were doing so because of our disagreement. although bats and i stopped our recent bicker on lvpolig, curmudgeon jumped in on this site.(when your on my side of the ring, it sure looks like a tag team).

I've heard that several of those mentioned can perform significant portions of ZZ Top's catalog, flawlessly, on Guitar Hero. My lighter is on and up. Rock on.

In Honor of a certain Allentown City Councilman and possible REPUBLICAN Mayoral candidate in 2009, perhaps ZZ Top will perform "La Grange!"

michael molovinsky said...

casey, forgive me, but i just read my original comment on this posting, curmudgeon's reply and your comment, and realize i'm being way too nice. although you call yourself a political blog, 8 of you collectively cannot manage to post everyday. although you call yourself a political blog, no community or political activists have heard of most of you. and although you call your self a political blog, you(collectively) mock those who oppose as nay-sayers, sad, pathetic crybabies and complaining rock crawlers. i suggest you consider adding introspection to your new year resolutions.

Molovinsky, you're just plain sick. You need help. Casey, have you noticed how NOBODY comments on anything he posts on his own blog? That's why he gets so nasty on other blogs. OK, now here's nasty, since that's all he understands: Nobody cares, Molovinsky. Go away. Just go away. Find a shrink somewhere to take care of that persecution complex of your.

Sorry, O'Hare. It had to be said. I don't necessarily always agree with what's written on the local blogs, even your's and Casey's, but you are professional about it. Some of these people are just way to whacked-out to be given any attention. I respect your belief that all opinions count, but there has to be a line to keep things civil. If you think I've crossed that line, please delete this entry.

However, I'm afraid that the Molovinksys and stealths and other fanatics will drag down the local blogosphere to their level if they are allowed to continue. Humor and occasional good-natured ribbing are one thing, but fanatics don't have senses of humor, and they cannot reason with civilized people.

It's time to give them all the respect they deserve. None.

Oh, and by the way, Happy New Year.

Mike I suggest you get a crying towel, you are going to need it. Chris has just about had enough of you, and so have some of the others. I am going to enjot humiliating you publicly.

curmudgeon and mad as bats, you both seem incensed that i refuse to continue taking your insults without speaking back. read your posts and comments! do you realize the effort put forth to fight something improper at city hall, or take it to court or harrisburg? you have been insulting me and other activists you disagree with since i started posting last may. don't confuse being righteous with the number of comments received.

Everyone, and Mike especially, please lighten up. I posted a blog about the MC and facial hair. It was humor. I'm sorry to see it turned into a series of increasingly malevolent posts. It's a tad rude.

Chris Casey said...

It's not that people don't want to comment, on MM's blog, they can't, he does not allow any disagreement.
Unlike those of us who allow him to spew whatever enters his head, he doesn't want to risk any ridicule.

Bernie, I liked your post, but this dialogue is way funnier than facial hair at The Morning Call.
