NIZ Board Rubber Stamped By Allentown City Council

Before they voted on nine NIZ Board nominees last night, I asked Allentown City Council to table the matter. No matter how qualified these selections might be, I am concerned that State Senator Pat Browne's involvement as a member of the nominating committee could taint the entire process, especially if it is eventually determined that used the authority of his office for the private pecuniary benefit of his lobbyist wife.

I was politely ignored.

Although each nominee was voted on individually, the votes were perfunctory. In fact, the only issue they really droned on about  (and boy did they beat this to death!) was when Donald Snyder's term should expire. It got so bad that Snyder tried to pull his nomination, but he was confirmed anyway.

After having unanimously voted on Sy Traub and Alan Jennings, a little light went off in Council member Jeanette Eichenwald's head. Wait a tic! "These nine individuals can benefit directly from participating in the NIZ," she suddenly realized.

Some lawyer brought in specially for the occasion, Marc Feller, told Eichenwald there's "nothing specific in the state law" to prevent that from happening. They could place a prohibition in their by-laws, he lamely suggested.

"We're appointing people with the hope they do the right thing, by what I perceive to be the right thing?" she continued.

Feller assured her most board members do a lot of "self-policing."

I feel better already.

When they came up for appointment, nominees solemnly promised they would recuse themselves from any matter in which they have a direct financial interest. Bill Grube, for example, said, "I have no dog in this hunt other than to rebuild the City."

And drive business to his restaurant.

The only NO vote cast, for any of the nine candidates, came from Jeanette Eichenwald. She thought Mann's status as an elected official might run afoul of a codified ordinance that prohibits elected officials from sitting on boards. City lawyers assured her that ban only applies to elected officials who hold a City office, but Eichenwald thought it was a "fine line."

Council member Peter Schweyer, who has likely returned to his position as Mann's Chief of Staff, recused himself on the Mann vote. But Michael Schlossberg, who worked for Mann six years ago, felt he had no conflict and voted for her. He explained his relationship with Mann, a "friend," was "more of an asset than a conflict of interest," whatever that may mean.

Michael is a very "honorous" man.

Later in the voting on nominees, Eichenwald claimed to be "concerned about the vetting process."

That's why I asked Council to table the vote.

Amazing how for the right pay you can find a lawyer to say just about anything you want them to say. Fascinating.

I guess they sleep at night and dream of those public paychecks. I guess a guilty conscience is no problem.

Thought about going to Council meeting but had some other commitments and considered it an act of futility. Allentown City Council acts in lock step with the administration. Although at times it complains about the administration, it never seems to act independently.

So if we were on the NIZ Board and issues come up that we would directly benefit from as it will, we could have a "gentleman's" agreement, we recuse ourselves from votes on things on which we would benefit from, but agree to vote in for things that would benefit each other, simple insiders politics.

Bernie,

This is business as usual in Allentown. Council a joke. Privately many of them complain about Ed as a person and his tactics as mayor. They take turns taking courageous stands against him and voicing righteous indignation. Then they always give him a super majority vote. You saw right through them.

Another sad day for a once great City as an increasingly lame City Council, does nothing but provide a rubberstamp the Democratic Party agenda.

Bernie -

Eichenwald's point about the possibility of board members benefiting directly from the NIZ was right on. Unfortunately it was also late since she should have brought it up before Council gave away control and approved the creation of the NIZ Authority just before the vote on appointees.

This is what happens when you rush legislation through without proper review, which is the way things are done in Allentonwn City Hall.

By the way, didn't Schlossberg recently receive a valuable endorsement for his PA House run from Mann? How would it go over if he voted against Mann's appointment? You would think that would be enough to recuse himself from the vote on Mann.

Just another reason why Schlossberg is unworthy of higher office.

Allentown gets what it deserves.

100% of it.

They keep voting in 88 year old men who can't even make it to a meeting and political operators only ever thinking about their next job, helping form a bunch of spineless city council members who don't do much of that "leading" thing.

Leading and making independent decisions is hard.

Your future is Reading, PA.

Comrade Eichenwald is a genuine credit to the Rubber Stamp Council of Apparatchiks.

I hereby nominate her for the Order of Pawlowski as she as proven herself to be a true Hero of the People's Democratic City of Allentown.

I trust all of these people to "self-police"! Of course! This is Allentown! Just look around. Lots of "self policing" going on. Right?

Funny how the teabaggers go on and on about the "Democratic" machine in Allentown. All these things going on in the city will just make wealthy Patrnership Republicans even wealtheir.

Mitt would be proud. Better learn the difference between political philosophy amd carpetbaggers who will pick the right party to get the votes, then just do what the Monied class want them to.

You guys really need to read more than Ann Coulter books.

Real Republican against dumb Republicans

I've noticed you often appear stupid on a variety of topics, not just limited to the NIZ.

The mayor did not attend the council meeting to support the appointments to the board that he submitted to council. I wonder if he heard you would be at meeting those that oppose schlossberg and schweyer as councilman can vote No if they vote in legislative districts they are candidates.

Anon 6:23,

I might be influenced by your (worthless?) opinion even if you did have the guts to sign your name, but, I would not count on that if I were you.

Have a fabulous time at Chairman Pawlowski's magnificent 160.0 million dollar Palace of Sport.

Anon 6:38,

You can rest assured I will not be voting for Mitt Romney the RINO nor buying tickets for events at Chairman Pawlowski's magnificent $ 160.0 million dollar Palace of Sport.

Better turn MSNBC back on to figure out what to say next.
