Gracedale Explains How It Recruits New Staff

Gracedale staff explained at Northampton County Council's August 19 Human Services meeting what efforts are made to hire new staff.

These include a temporary CNA program, a tuition assistance program, college outreach, high school career fairs, use of CareerLink, community outreach, attendance at job fairs and advertising at multiple outlets. The number of new hires made are as follows: 2019 - 161; 2020 - 199; and 2020 (Jan thru Jun) - 59.  They are explained in detail in the power point below. 

What staffers failed to state, and what Council failed to ask, is how many employees left during this time period. So it's unclear whether there is a net gain or net loss of employees.

Of interest to me is how many still there. Of those that left what were the lengths of stays; did they stay till training finished and then jumped ship; and how many were voluntary or county initiated terminations. Perhaps that might help to address future hiring/retention efforts. However, I would not like to think that these additional inquiries would embolden elected officials to micro-manage Gracedale. Information on COVID and the available vaccines is continually updated and also colored by politics. At this time, I think it is incredibly callous to provide care to nursing home individuals and not be vaccinated. In addition, if your religious or health conditions prevent vaccination, I think you need to step aside and find another line of work. In addition all patient care should be done by staff with the best protective equipment available. The residents should not be placed at risk by staff decisions. Especially since they have no input on caregivers or knowledge of that staff person's vaccination status. it is one thing if I choose to go around individuals in a store that may be contagious but the residents to the best of my knowledge have no say.

Turnover stats would reveal the real problems. Staff have been working in less than ideal staffing for a long time. It effects turnover. Burnout happens to the best of staff. New state mandate numbers will take years to achieve but will eventually help. Problem is many homes will close as reimbursement will not cover costs and profits will disappear.

The channel 69 article states a human resources rep saying staff are not nice to new people. How incredible to hear this from HR! Isn't it a management and HR problem then? Everyone wants to blame others. Management needs to look at themselves first and fix their issues. That's what true leadership does.

Staff at Gracedale are nasty to new people and agency staff, managers have no clue what is going on. That place is horrendous and nobody new will stay there because of this.
