Bethlehem Township Reapportions Its Four Wards

Bethlehem Township Commissioners voted 4-0 (Pat Breslin was absent) at their August 15 meeting to advertise an ordinance to reapportion its four wards as required by state law. This reapportionment will have no impact on November's election.  It will take effect next year.

Township Manager Melissa Shafer said a map of the four wards will be made available online once the changes are made by the county elections office.

Isn't it a bit late for this? What took so long? 2010 Census data was available 5 years ago. State Rep elections in 2018 and 2020 could be messy with split districts again.

This is simply the districts for their current county commissioners races. Also with the township growing and changing at a fast pace I'm sure there was discussion about waiting until places like the Wagner Farms new apartments were finished and beginning to be occupied.

This is not uncommon in some townships to wait as opposed to doing something that won't make any sense once it is rolled out.

1)Then it should have been done for 2013, and 2) Marsha Hahn and Steve Samuelson's districts are split by the wards and will be affected. we had this problem with Bob Freeman's old district in BT where people voting in the same precinct had to use separate machines. It creates confusion.

One of the reasons it is being done now is that there are no commissioners' elections this November.
