About The Bethlehem Police

The Bethlehem Police Department is one of 107 police departments accredited by the Pennsylvania Police Chiefs Association, having first been formed in 1917. Over that time, six officers have been killed in the line of duty. There are currently 155 police officers. There are six Latinos, four African Americans, one Asian and one of Middle Eastern descent.

In their Mission Statement, Bethlehem Police vow to at all times "conduct ourselves with the highest ethical standards to maintain public confidence, community support and respect, treating all persons with dignity and fairness, protecting their constitutional and civil rights, and providing equal protection under the law."

So -- of 155 officers in Bethlehem -- 143 are Caucasian? Clearly, an accident waiting to happen, folks... Try to explain 92+% white to the Justice Department when a "Ferguson" happens on us. And it will.

Most police officers would like to see a little more diversity in their ranks, however, minority recruitment is almost impossible without lowering entrance standards. The dedicated minority officers of the Bethlehem P.D. are there because they want to be and were not given the job because they are a minority. They competed with everybody, on an equal standard, and received a job. The problem with minority representation on the police department is not the department, the City, the Commonwealth, but the community which they come from. They are the catalysts of any disproportion with the ranks of the P.D.
