President Joe Biden delivered a State of the Union address (text located here) last night designed to unite left and right, Republican and Democrat and the haves with the have nots. I doubt that the current polarization will diminish anytime soon, but he just might lowered temperatures in some quarters. Instead of dividing people, his is a message of unity.
When he turned to social security, he seems to have sprung a trap. "If anyone tries to cut Social Security, I will stop them, " he innocently started. "And if anyone tries to cut Medicare, I will stop them." This sparked outrage from the right, Marjorie Taylor Green screamed "Liar!" while others shouted in disapproval.
Biden then pivoted to claim that not all Republicans want to cut social security. The hoots and hollers continued, and Biden finally went on to say that we must all, even Republicans, therefore agree that there will be no cuts to social security. This brought applause from everyone, even Republicans.
This was rather well done for someone who is supposed to be senile.
Don't get me wrong. Biden is a stutterer. His speech impediment surfaced at times. But he was relaxed last night. He delivered a strong speech
Pointing to over 300 bipartisan bills signed since he took office, he argued that we are united far more than we are divided. "To my Republican friends, if we could work together in the last Congress, there is no reason we can’t work together in this new Congress. The people sent us a clear message. Fighting for the sake of fighting, power for the sake of power, conflict for the sake of conflict, gets us nowhere. And that’s always been my vision for the country: to restore the soul of the nation, to rebuild the backbone of America: the middle class, to unite the country. We’ve been sent here to finish the job!"
He agreed that we've lost our pride, our sense of self-worth, but argued we've been making progress. Unemployment is at a 50-year low, inflation has dropped every month over the past six months and we are starting to build American again.
Biden's Unity Agenda (you can see it here) is focused on (1) ending cancer; (2) supporting our veterans; (3) stopping our mental health crisis; and (4) winning the fight against opioids and fentanyl overdoses.
Sadly, some Republican hecklers diminished themselves when they heckled the President.

That can include shouting, booing, turning one’s back and even tearing-up a President’s speech live behind his back! The shouting and booing doesn’t bother me as it’s a more natural reaction quite similar to cheering and shouting “Hear, Hear!”

Biden has gotten more "bipartisan" legislation passed in his first two years than any other President, therefore making him one of the best. Like it or not, that is a fact.
I believe Biden inadvertently created the fentanyl crisis via lax border and China policies. His judgment regarding addictive substances is obviously flawed, having failed to rear children who didn't become addicts. I'm saddened for his drug addicted children and the pain that must have caused. So many of our families have been hurt. But he's not the guy to lead us to safety. He's the guy who put us in harm's way.

The country is not hopeful at all. This administration's cognitive dissonance is remarkable. They're not telling the truth. It's reassuring that polls indicate large majorities have figured this out.
