Last week, I challenged you to guess the average cost of a meal at the Northampton County jail. When Director of Corrections Bob Meyers offered to treat the winner to both a meal and tour, I got lots of guesses, from a low of 39 cents to a high of ten bucks.
So what's the actual cost?
According to Meyers, the average cost of the cuisine at Chez Northampton is $1.25. Sometimes, especially when there are lots of leftovers, it does indeed consist of what Meyers calls "food loaf." Meyers claims that, depending on the leftovers, food loaf can be pretty good.
Tastes like chicken!
So who won?
The lucky winner is a reader who calls himself or herself "bs," and came closest with a guess of $1.15.
BS can contact me at BOHare5948@aol.com, so I can let Bob Meyers know he'll be having another guest soon. BS, I will keep your name and other identifying information confidential unless you agree to let me out you.

Too much. Cut it back so we can buy more bullets. They are cheaper in the long run.
Bernie, is it true that 80% of the prison population is made up of minority populations(mainly African Americans and Hispanics)? If that is factual, why are those numbers so high and what, if anything, are we doing about it? Thank you
I won too, my guess was "Too Much" so that makes me a winner but you can go drop the soap with the boys Bernie...
9:00 AM I don't know what the breakdown is in a county jail, but it's no secret that are minorities and poor are housed there in greater percentages than in the outside population.
9:06, what a hateful person! But like most of those, you are an anonymous coward.
I can assure you that "bs" will not get one of the meals that costs $1.25. They will prepare a special higher quality meal like they do for the prison board, and any other "important" person they are blowing smoke up.
"bs" sent me an email tonight. Once his tour is complete, I'll ask him.
What does it matter how the prison boards meals are made. The food provided to the jail is what it is. How it is prepared can differ everyday, but everyone eats what is brought in. If they were hiding lobster or bringing it in for those "special" dinners we would have heard the complaint a long time ago. I guessed $3.50 per day so I was close. Instead of complaining, get involved in a positive way. The jail needs volunteers. You'd get a good look then. Of course if what you bring to the jail is an attitude please stay away. If we are lucky maybe Corbett will privatize this place....I'll vote for that.
9:21 Thats typical republican bullshit.
"If they were hiding lobster or bringing it in for those "special" dinners we would have heard the complaint a long time ago."
The prison board meetings are open to the public, go see for yourself. I already know what goes on.
There are special meals for the board, they don't eat the trash the inmates or the staff have to eat. Just sayin'
You don't know what the hell you're just sayin', which explains why you don't sign your name.
I can't believe that ALL americans find it amusing and a great pastime to pick on people who have been sent to prison. and when they get out they are even more harassed and shunned and thrown away like yesterdays newspaper. your all a bunch of hypocrites like the hypocrites that nailed jesus to the cross. there's not one of you that walks among us that hasn't done something that normally is an imprisonable offence such as forcing your GF to
have sex or you stole something or innocently passed a check knowing the money wasn't there or driving while your under the influence of a medication or booze or whatever.I can only hope that it happens to you one day and I happen to be that guy who says "hey i remember you, your the asshead that likes to talk about unfortunate people who made a mistake so lets drop them pants boy and have at it !
