Grucela: Senate? We Don't Need no Steenkin' Senate

“Why did you pour that coffee into your saucer?” George Washington asked. “To cool it,” Jefferson replied. “Even so,” Washington declared, “we pour legislation into the senatorial saucer to cool it.”

That's how our first (and perhaps greatest) President simply explained, to a genius, the need for a senate. Pa. State Rep. Richard Grucela (D) wants to take that saucer away.

According to a report that first appeared at Blue Coyote, Grucela has proposed eliminating the senate.

Poof!

In a news release, Rich sees "no reason to have two chambers representing the same people doing the same thing." I guess he never met Washington.

His Bill has 24 sponsors, but no fellow legislators from the Lehigh Valley.

I will sign on as a sponsor. Just tell me where to sign on.

They could have cut the house in half and made it more effective years ago. I didn't see many House members supporting that idea..Wouldn't this have to pass the Senate to become law? Can't wait for that vote..

All states but one have a bi-cameral legislature. Washington was correct, in that more bad laws would be made without a mechanism to let cooler heads prevail. Imagine how many more midnight bills the PA General Assembly could pass with only one chamber!!

A valid reform would be to reduce the size, but not the structure. But, as "foolery" points out, you will never see politicians voluntarily eliminate their own seats.

What is Rep. Grucela's motivation?

This is like the joke about the resolution to proclaim our love for Mothers.

Grucella knows the people will love it and the only moaning will be from State Senators.
Bottom line is it will never happen and he knows it. It does make him appear more of a populist.
It is actually a very shrewd political move. He is a Harrisburg guy who pushes a bill banging Harrisburg.
Give him credit, he knows his politics.

It goes to show how stupid the people in this area are.

He'll be likely voted back in office for another term.

"America" home for the insane.
