Gus Loupos, former chair of Bethlehem's Zoning Hearing Board, has passed away. You can read his obituary here. It tells you many fascinating things about this great man. He served in the US Army during the Korean War, was a teacher at both of Bethlehem's public high schools and even helped found an interim school for troubled kids. I was privileged to get to know him during many long nights covering the Zoning Hearing Board. He was everything you'd want to see in a public official.
Gus set an atmosphere for the board that continues today. He was always careful to make sure that anyone who wanted to speak had the opportunity to do so. He was fair-minded in what were sometimes contentious hearings, and always displayed a self-deprecating good humor.
I will miss him.

I had him at Liberty. He was one of the good ones. I appreciated the story in the obituary about him having the house phone in his car. And it always amazes me when someone can do so much with their time, things that benefit the community. Thank you Mister Loupos.
Nice piece. Gus was a good guy in government. With all the negativity and anger today aimed at government officials, it is good to remember that does not have to be the case. I do believe Bernie, that there are still people in government that are like Gus in being fair and open minded. I have watched some who have been very open and respectful to the public and supportive of the rights of people to speak to power regardless how batshit crazy the people or comments may be.
So as we remember and honor Gus it is important to remember that there still are good and decent people in government even if you don't always agree with them.
Agree still some good ones out there. Unfortunately some of the new "officials" come off as mean and know it all. Gus was a gentleman, only a few of those left.
God rest his soul
I've known Mr. Loupos since the 70s in the old Interm School Days at Franklin school in Bethlehem and i can say with all honesty that I would not be here today if he had not started that school for thick headed kids like me.
Thank you Mr Loupos for everything i have in my life and i mean everything
