What Trump's GOP Rivals Say About His Indictment

For the most part, Trump's GOP rivals condemn his federal indictment as the politically inspired tool of a weaponized DOJ. Only two candidates - Chris Christie and Asa Hutchinson - are negative. Mike Pence, who probably knows Trump better than the other candidates, made clear that no one is above the law. The rest are basically pale imitations of what Trump himself has been saying.

Ron DeSantis: “The weaponization of federal law enforcement represents a mortal threat to a free society. We have for years witnessed an uneven application of the law depending upon political affiliation. ... Why so zealous in pursuing Trump yet so passive about Hillary or Hunter?”

Nikki Haley: "This is not how justice should be pursued in our country. .... The American people are exhausted by the prosecutorial overreach, double standards, and vendetta politics. ... It’s time to move beyond the endless drama and distractions."

Mike Pence: “I’m deeply troubled to see this indictment move forward. ... Yesterday on the road in Iowa, I had said I had hoped that the DOJ would see it’s way clearer not to move forward here. But let me be very clear: No one is above the law.”

Ryan Binkley: "“Many of the things that he’s faced has been brought upon him on a purely political standpoint. and I’m saddened by our country in that. We need to get all of this politics out of that area and be able to allow people to run freely and my prayers are that equity and justice will come for him and for everybody else.”

Doug Burgum: “America is a country where you’re innocent until you’re proven guilty. These are serious charges, but ask the American people, the people we’re talking to, they’ve got serious concerns about whether or not there’s trust in American institutions.”

Chris Christie: "The fact is that these facts are devastating. ... The bigger issue for our country is, is this the type of conduct that we want from someone who wants to be president of the United States?”

Larry Elder: “We’ve seen a pattern of partisan prosecution and this is another example.”

Vivek Ramaswamy: "I never thought we’d see the day when the U.S. President deputizes the DOJ to arrest his lead rival in the middle of an election. ... It would be much easier for me to win this election if Trump weren’t in the race, but I stand for principles over politics.”

Asa Hutchinson: “Donald Trump’s actions – from his willful [sic] disregard for the Constitution to his disrespect for the rule of law – should not define our nation or the Republican Party. ... This is a sad day for our country. While Donald Trump is entitled to the presumption of innocence, the ongoing criminal proceedings will be a major distraction. This reaffirms the need for Donald Trump to respect the office and end his campaign.”

Tim Scott: “We look at every case based on evidence in America,” Scott said. “Every person is presumed innocent, not guilty, and what we’ve seen over the last several years is the weaponization of the Department of Justice against the former president.”

Attorney General Bill Barr on Fox News Sunday: "I'm shocked by the sensitivity of these documents and how many there were. It was the right thing for the government to get the documents back. The counts that Trump purposely withheld these documents are solid counts".

"The idea of presenting trump as a victim or this is a witch-hunt is ridiculous. In the past, yes, and I've defended him in the past. This is different. He was totally wrong".

"The government acted with restraint, were very deferential to him and were patient for over a year and trump jerked them around, lied and obstructed justice. "

"Trump was reckless. He did not return the documents. These are not Trump's documents. They are the government's documents. In no universe is battle plans against a foreign nation Donald Trump's personal documents ".

Re: Other presidents having official documents and declassification of records, Barr continues...

"There are two big lies out there. First, with regard to Obama and Clinton having documents hidden in their homes, that is completely false. Both Presidents arranged with the Archives to set up special space under the Management Control and Security of the Archives to set up special space until their Libraries were ready. It wasn't what Trump did, who took documents without permission and put them in his basement "

The second lie is believing that the President has complete authority to declassify is facially ridiculous. These are official documents prepared by the government. These are not Trump's personal notes. It's inarguable. Period."

"I defended Trump on Russiagate, spoke out against Alvin Bragg's indictment against Trump and spoke out for 30 years of using the Criminal Justice system to influence politics. But, this case is not that. The Government acted responsibly and legally. Donald J. Trump did not".

Hey MAGA, Trumpy admitted taking and moving the classified documents as a citizen, not president, into his personal unsecured bathrooms and ballrooms, and still said that the classified and top secret documents of our government were his. He is not king, nor sane.

"Trump makes them crazy that is why he must be elected again-despite the media and the cheating"

Yes, that really IS the only reason to support him. But keep in mind that some of us "crazies" are happy to watch Trump drag down his party (and yours). You sure showed us!
