On Monday, while going through my Facebook feed, a Republican friend posted a link to a story that slurred Islamic beliefs. The linked story claimed that a Texas mosque was refusing to help Harvey refugees because "Allah forbids helping infidels."
The story is a complete lie. The mosque is nonexistent. A fake name was given to the quoted Imam. The linked "news" source even states, "We present fiction as fact and our sources don’t actually exist. Names that represent actual people and places are purely coincidental and all images should be considered altered and do not in any way depict reality. ... In other words, if you believe this crap you’re a real dumbass."
The truth? Houston mosques opened their doors to Harvey evacuees, regardless of religious belief, even on one of their holiest days, known as the Eid.
“They are the No. 1 priority. They will not be disturbed, they will not be displaced, they will not be moved,” said M.J. Khan, the president of the Islamic Society of Greater Houston, which operates the Champions mosque and several others that are providing shelter. “People who come, if they have to pray in the parking lot, they’ll pray in the parking lot.”So while Muslims open their doors to one and all, Islamaphobes are circulating a false story to justify their own religious intolerance.
I corrected her. She was even corrected by a former Chair of the Lehigh County GOP who happens to be Jewish. This person is herself a religious minority and should know better than most of us what it's like to be discriminated against because of religious conviction. But the hateful lie still stands. (It's possible she does not know how to delete it).
In addition to the lies about Muslims, there's another lie making the rounds, this one appealing to racists. This one falsely claims that Black Lives Matter protesters were blocking emergency crews from providing aide to those stranded by Hurricane Harvey. The person who posted this link on Facebook is actually a local government official and another Republican friend. He has posted these false stories before. He refuses to take them down, and he knows how.
So Hurricane Harvey has spawned a false news story promoting Islamaphobia, followed by another promoting racism. And then there's an obviously doctored photograph. It shows Donald Trump tooling around in a lifeboat, picking up survivors. ... In a suit.
He looks as though he's handing out "Make America Great Again" hats.
Why is this happening? Hard to say. Probably someone trying to make money with online clicks. But in every authoritarian form of government, legitimate news sources are first undermined with precisely this kind of disinformation.
Updated Noon:Bill White has coincidentally published a column on this topic, replete with tips on how to avoid being schnookered. Personally,I think you need no tips. Most of you are intelligent enough to know that you should question and multiple source a story that, on its face, is outrageous.

Bernie, I can see why you would protect the private individual's identity. However, an elected official that deliberately spread "fake news" in order to ignite racial hatred should be outed. Friend or not, that is just wrong.
You yourself have said in the past that elected public officials have no cloak of anonymity. I agree.
I did not out him bc I am not sure if his post could be seen by the public or only Facebook friends. I will check that and decide.
Not cool man, just not cool. Especially if the person knows its fake. This crap is getting out of control. It was once just the prevue of the "National Enquire" and other tabloid rags, now it is being seen as real stories. I just hate it but don't know how to stop it.
Trump's fault
"But in every authoritarian form of government, legitimate news sources are first undermined with precisely this kind of disinformation."
True. In eight years of the executive order president, WaPo, NYT, and CNN were all marginalized as advocacy outlets and are no longer considered credible, objective news sources.
Authoritarianism, as I learned in university, is a form of government characterized by strong central power and limited political freedoms. Individual freedoms are subordinate to the state and there is no constitutional accountability under an authoritarian regime.
Now, I suppose if President Trump is an authoritarian, as Bernie states he is, then instead of Congress debating changes to Obamacare, he should simply announce an Executive Order repealing and replacing it and fulfilling the dreams of overburdened taxpayers who have insurance premium payments higher than their mortgage payments and deductibles so high their insurance cards are worthless
Also how about a Trump executive order mandating tax cuts and repatriating American wealth parked overseas so entrepreneurs can fulfill their dreams of creating American jobs
Hmmm maybe that would be a good thing?
You never have a problem with anybody who is an elected official how you choose not to name him now is very telling
Fake news sources are abundant all around. Not only from the right. Even mainstream media, [for instance CNN], have done a good job at promoting lies and publishing these lies as legitimate. Unfortunately, and predictable, the left, like you Bernie, blame the alleged authoritarian rule of the current regime. As previously stated by 0653 AM, if this truly an authoritarian government, the president should just disband congress and rule by decree. This hasn't happened, nor will it!
6.53
well clearly the republicans clearly want to have "overburdened taxpayers who have insurance premium payments higher than their mortgage payments and deductibles so high their insurance cards are worthless".
they had the opportunity to make changes and chose not to.
so republicans are supporting Obama cares.
as to " repatriating American wealth parked overseas"
well they did that when President Bush jr was in office.
the rate was 5 percent and that created plenty of jobs--overseas.
ask any of those companies chomping at the bit over repatriation how many US jobs are they going to create in the US?--all you will hear is crickets.
as Romney said corporations are people.
try parking wealth overseas and tell the IRS you will consider paying taxes but only 5 percent or less.
you will not have a good time in jail.
6:53
If you still think that cutting the taxes of the wealthy will create jobs, you are totally out of your mind. Trickle-down does not work, has never worked, and will not work.
Trickle-down is a lie told by the wealthy in order to benefit the wealthy. Look at what happened to the income disparity in the USA after Reagan tried his tac cut business.
Have you ever wondered why Reagan raised taxes at least 7 times after cutting them? You are aware, aren't you, that trickle-down also tripled the national debt while Reagan and his astrologers ran the White House?
So Bernie still just can't stand the fact that Hillary Clinton is not President.

so do the majority of voters in the election for President.

I'm not the expert that you seem to think you are, but it appears tome that Obama exceeded his authority when he issued an Exec Order concerning DACA. He did so after Congress ailed to act. But this was an order that expands the personal freedom of others, so it is not authoritarianism. Trump is an authoritarian supported by authoritarians who think they are pure Republicans. They are something else. I sometimes wonder whether they've been sleeping next to pods. .
"Fake news sources are abundant all around. Not only from the right. Even mainstream media, [for instance CNN], hav"
You could argue that CNN or Fox is biased, but they are NOT fake news by any stretch. They try to get it right. Trump is trying to marginalize them bc that is what authoritarians do. He wants to control the message and the messengers.
Unlike the mainstream, which can be criticized as elitist or smug, The sites like the one promoting Islamaphobia is posting what it knows to be absolute lies.
Also, your reading comprehension skills are flawed, likely bc you've been dumbed down. I specifically say I do not know for sure the reason for the rise of fake news. I state that I think it is most likely from people who are posting outrageous things so people look at their site and click on their ads. It could be part of Russia's attempt to undermine western democracy. But this is a pattern in every authoritarian government.
How many false stories has FAUX New retracted? SEVERAL. Even Hannity had to retract his story about American War Hero, John McCain.
"You never have a problem with anybody who is an elected official how you choose not to name him now is very telling"
If someone posts a comment on Facebook that is there for the world to see, it is fair game. If it is something that can only be seen by friends, then it is inappropriate for me to out the person. I pretty much go by that in my years of blogging. I would still out the elected official if it was blatant racism. But this guy is no racist. He is just a moron, which is why he's a friend and was a friend long before he was in government or I was in blogging. He is a local elected official, but not around here. This is Lehigh Valley Ramblings, not Everywhere in the World Ramblings.
Trickle down is not a lie. Especially one which is "told by the wealthy to benefit the wealthy". Money does flow "downstream" from the employer to the employee. It also "trickles down" to local services. An employer needs lawn maintenance, or a plumber or electrician. The people who are provided employment buy groceries, oil to heat their homes, flowers, snow shovels, health care, plumbers or electricians, roofers, realtors, landlords, lawn mowers, tools, clothing...etc... Need I go on? Where does this money, which "trickles" into the local economy come from? On a local level, one can see the trickledown effect of regulation. Over-regulation becomes quite glaring. It certainly does cost you, the taxpayer, on the local level, the state level and, of course, the federal level. Regulation trickles down. Pollution, especially water, trickles down (stream). Wages trickle(flow)down. If businesses have more money, they invest more money. The people they invest in/with, in turn, invest and thus the flow. Please define "wealthy". Who defines "wealthy"? Does "wealthy" change? What about the philanthropy and other giving which may not garner headlines and which few will know of? What about maids, butlers, caterers? Society functions best when we do not focus on what others have or what we do not have; or when we do not focus on everything being "fair", "equitable", because it's not and won't ever be. Logic over emotion. Reason over dogma.
Bernie, the picture of the potus handing off one of his Make America Great hats and taking off. Now that is hilarious and I have got to learn this picture editing thing as it looks like a good local tool. This could be used to fake many different venues that seem to be push yet are lacking!
I am not going to allow you to post your ugly remarks here any longer.
"donnie two scoops lost the popular vote"
Which shows that it's not just fake news that's the problem, the media and partisans love fake "narratives" as well.
But anyway, you do know the rules, right?
Let me guess, whenever the Eagles score fewer points but gain more yards, you believe they REALLY won the game.
Anther example of what I consider fake news-- "Trickle Down" policies work.
(1) Not a single company is going to hire one more employee then is required irregardless how much cash they come into. Name me one company that will pay 3 people to do the job of 2.
(2) A company is likely to spend their increased wealth on newer equipment thus eliminating employees. (Less jobs. Not more)
(3) Corporations paying less taxes results in higher taxes for everyone else. You know the government is never going to do less spending. You can count on it with 100% certainty.
(4) Top level management (CEO's) will get even larger bonuses based on the greater profits as a direct result of this type of corporate welfare.
Reagan tried it. When he left office in 1989 the economy was sliding down hill costing G.H. Bush a second Term. ("It's the economy stupid"). When Bill Clinton left office he brought the budget back up to a surplus. Which brings us to G.W. Bush who tried trickle down theory again by lowering taxes. The result of which Barack Obama was handed one of the worst economies in decades along with inherited deficit spending.
In 2016 corporations paid $444 billion to the U.S. Treasury (about 20% of the total tax revenue) at a rate of about an average 26.7% on their profits. I hardly call that overtaxed. If "trickle down" works so well, what are you looking for-- 14%? This while the rest of us individuals pay nearly double that. Without a doubt individuals would then be forced to pay even a higher percentage having to make up for lost tax revenue. Yeah that's trickle down alright--more like piss on the wage earners if you ask me.
How many times do we have g to around this same circle before we admit it doesn't work?
He won the election Buddy Lesavoy popular vote in the comment that pointed this out is very accurate.
1) Four or five voters in the entire US care about DACA. 2) Making immigration policy via executive order was not a good idea.

1. irregardless is not a word.
2. A company may indeed buy new equipment. That increases the business of and investment into the manufacture of the new equipment. Not to mention the "innards" needed to run the machines of today. This can increase jobs, some union jobs, for those companies. A good example is, instead of paying an ever increasing minimum wage and increasing labor costs, companies(such as McDonalds)are moving to touch screen ordering. This may come at the cost of the very jobs some wish to protect; however, it will increase the jobs in a different, higher paying sector. This in turn supports families and on we go. It may not be in your neighborhood, however. There are always two sides to every coin. Even the "buy American" policies can cost jobs. Dock workers, port workers and the communities they support. However, the trade-off is an increase in land based and continental transportation and more local warehousing, etc... Corporations(anyone) paying fewer tax dollars have more money to spend, or invest. If your taxes were lower you would have more money to spend. Corporations would not be different in that regard. Lowering corporate taxes is not a form of corporate welfare as you state. You said the government will never do less spending. Well, that is one of the differences in the philosophy of conservative and liberal. A conservative would tend to work on the government spending side. Conservatives would want a smaller, more efficient government. Doing so would free up money, which belongs to the people and not the government. It would not be a zero-sum game. In your case, you would rather not worry as much about the size, scope and expense of government and instead focus on corporations and making sure those with money pay a majority of the cost of such an inefficient government. I do not see that as being..."fair", using any definition of the word. You seem to be angrier at those with more than you do with solving the problem. Reason and logic over feelings, emotion or political dogma.

You just proved that "fake news" is subjective.
"Name me one company that will pay 3 people to do the job of 2."
Of course they won't. That would not be prudent. The company wouldn't last long.
Only government pays three people to do the work of two. And the Phillies.

It most certainly is. Go Google it.
"2. A company may indeed buy new equipment. That increases the business of and investment into the manufacture of the new equipment. Not to mention the "innards" needed to run the machines of today. This can increase jobs,"
I spent 33 years in the food manufacturing and I can assure you that is not the case. We replaced five hand packers with one machine. 10 Pallet stackers with palletizers (which I ran as one person). The department I worked in reduced it workforce by over 60%-- and they did this w/o government supported tax breaks that weren't already in place.
"If your taxes were lower you would have more money to spend."
I made it clear why they won't be. You can't reduce government revenue without making up the difference. Trump's proposal includes lower tax brackets but at the same time taking away previous deductions on Schedule A. Thus most will see an increase.
"You seem to be angrier at those with more than you do with solving the problem. Reason and logic over feelings, emotion or political dogma."
This is the line of attack most conservatives partisans like yourself like to tack on others who call them out. I'm neither angry nor placing emotion over logic. I have no problem with people having more money. My daughter earns twice as much as I ever did with my overtime. Her fiancé makes over $300,000 a year.
What I am concerned with is this fake trickle down economics you support. If you will note the stock market is already through the roof without tax reductions. Trump claims unemployment is down. Therefore what need is for them? You referred to " solving the problem". My response is what problem?
You guys really need to stop with this line of attack that somehow everyone who isn't supportive is emotionally unstable, incapable of logic or somehow has some sort of " political dogma" when they speak. It makes you look goofy.
""2. A company may indeed buy new equipment. That increases the business of and investment into the manufacture of the new equipment. "
Oops I forgot to add, at Kraft foods the mustard labeler was made in Italy. The Italian speaking installers and service techs from Italy serviced, maintained and supplied that piece of equipment. The labelers were also from Germany. The new casepacker for our A1 line was manufactured and purchased from Sweden. The entire coffee lines for Maxwell House, Starbucks and Keurig pods in Fogelsville were all made in Germany as well. Three teams of 6 workers from Germany installed and trained us on those lines.
The software and the latter logic computer boards that ran our equipment came from China.
The tomato paste and honey was all brought in from South America. A lot of the cheese came from New Zealand when they still made it out there. Spices, nearly 100% came in from overseas.
Most of the new labor was hired through temp agencies before Kraft closed.
Many years prior Pennsylvania gave almost a million dollars in grants so Kraft wouldn't leave Plus they were given several tax breaks. They closed anyway years later.
How many more breaks do you think they needed. Maybe things will turn out differently with other companies this time right? Yeah so yeah ok MAGA. Good luck with that theory of yours.
No I'm not angry. Just being realistic.
CORRECTION: The A1 steak sauce labelers were also from Germany. T
THE LAST GREAT AMERICAN PATRIOT says...
"Reason and logic over feelings, emotion or political dogma."
That is indeed a noble statement. Unfortunately, since the late 1970's the cost of living has increased faster than the rate of wage increases over the past thirty years. The percentage of wealth has increased at the top of the scale as opposed to the bottom. Corporate investment in America and research and development has decreased as a percentage of said investment.
Your comment about more money at the top means more investment, more jobs, higher pay allowing people to then pay for groceries, heat and homes. Sadly just like the so-called theoretical beauty of communism's "to each his own needs", in practice it fails. The father of modern capitalism, Adam Smith himself acknowledged that a level of corporate morality must exist in order for your "theory "to work. Sadly, that morality is not very prevalent today. People are working longer hours at more jobs with less purchasing power all the while the wealth of their employers has grown at the greatest rate in the history of America.
So we can spew bumper sticker statements about our individual dogmas all day long. The actual proof is in the real life results. So yes "trickle down" has had limited success for some but not the majority of Americans. You choose to blame the government for the corporate lack of morality. That is your right. I believe in individual responsibility; therefore, I chose to blame the basic human trait of greed. As long as people defend that greed, why should the economy ever improve? Would you invest your wealth in people if you didn't need to in order to remain and gain wealth?
I apologize in advance for any grammatical errors.
I agree, with the morality point. The issue is as you state..."Sadly, that morality is not very prevalent today". A moral people were and are integral to the founding and success of the United States of America. The bigger picture issue is not political. It is a "heart" issue. We see the world differently. The questions at the end are good ones. I am not a conservative "partisan". I did not write and do not believe that the government is to blame for the corporate lack of morality. You erroneously connected those dots. I did not and do not (try to)spew "bumper sticker" slogans. I came up with those words on my own. I do think for myself. We just come to opposing conclusions. Our influences and experiences help to shape how we see the world. Each individual is unique in that regard.
Is it right, for example, that in some states illegal aliens can get in-state tuition rates but that the child of an Afghan war veteran from a neighboring state cannot?
We are a nation of immigrants, legal immigrants, and we are also a nation of laws. Children were brought to this country illegally by their parents because we failed to enforce our immigration laws. Now would be a good time to start enforcing them. And while we’re at it, pass some laws that put Americans first so that they can pursue their dreams. And, yes, welcome those who legally come here and dream of becoming American citizens who respect the rule of law, unlike President Obama.

9:21 That's nice. To hear the Democrats tell it, all the illegal aliens under the DACA program are paragons of virtue we Americans should be throwing ourselves at the knees of in gratitude for them coming to stay. In reality, DACA is a shabby little temporary amnesty program that rewards underachievers and permits quite a few criminals to avail themselves of its benefits.
The reality is that DACA mainly provides cheap labor for yard work, house cleaning and kitchen help. All very desirable needs for the elite and wealthy. Oh, and lets not forget those future votes for the Democratic candidates because they were rewarded with all of those nice government benefits for managing to get across the border without being caught.
DACA is illegal, period, full stop. Congress has had plenty of opportunity to change the law and had refused before Obama issued the executive order overriding the will of Congress. In actuality, the political party that champions DACA has been roundly thrown out of power as a result of pursuing that policy.
Seems like the American people have spoken.

Robots will take 140 million jobs in the next 20 years. Our population will reach 400 million in 50 years and 500 million will come very quickly after that. Competition for the few unskilled jobs that remain will be intense and wages will continue to fall vs. inflation. Big business loves unrestricted immigration and technology will continue to improve and replace human labor. Math is on the side of business interests. It's not on the side of the American worker.
6:38. 1:49 better try again.
To be eligible under the DACA executive order, an illegal alien must have entered the United States before his 16th birthday and prior to June 2007. The minimum age for entering the United States military is 17 with parental approval, 18 without. The war in Iraq started in 2003; the DACA EO wasn't issued until June 2012. Go make up fairy tales elsewhere.
The guy who is responsible for this DACA mess, Obama, says he plans to speak out against the canceling of the program. So the guy who abused his authority by issuing an illegal executive order, which is contrary to his power under federal law, now says he's going to continue supporting his illegal action, even while it's being corrected by those who actually obey the law.
My question is, why hasn't Obama been charged with a crime for his illegal act? He needs to be brought before a congressional committee to explain his illicit behavior. It's bad enough that we see a president deciding to rule by fiat, but when his lawless acts are met by a mere slap on the wrist from the House and Senate, it makes it clear to everyone that some people are above the law.

To qualify for DACA, applicants must meet the following major requirements, although meeting them does not guarantee approval:[38]
Came to the United States before their 16th birthday
Have lived continuously in the United States since 15 June 2007
Were under age 31 on 15 June 2012 (i.e., born on 16 June 1981 or after)

of course using your logic donnie two scoops violated the law when his executive order banning Muslims was halted by the courts.
Congress would be dumber then usual to ask President Obama to speak to a congressional committee about DACA as he would simply get to bash those very members of Congress for their failure to act.
the republicans in charge of Congress has had plenty of time to address the issue of DACA and decided that they agreed with it--otherwise they could have addressed the problems.
if you are looking to blame someone try blaming the republican led Congress.
He's been charged with no crime because he's committed no crime. As President, he has the power to decide which laws to enforce. He can choose to exercise prosecutorial discretion against rounding up and deporting a class of people who have committed no crime and whose only offense is having been born. Just as a DA can decide against prosecuting a church over Bingo, the President can decide that feds should use their limited resources more wisely. Now you could argue that Obama went too far, and perhaps he did, but the notion that he should be arrested is just plain silly. What crime? You do realize that the dreamers themselves committed no crime. They did not intentionally come here illegally. Some of them only speak English.
"President Obama was well within his executive power to prioritize who is to be deported.

Bingo. That is precisely what Obama said in his statement. He may have gone a bit too far, and now the Rs and Trump can prove they are not xenophobes and racists by adopting DACA within 6 months, perhaps tying it to other immigration efforts. I won't be holding my breath.
"As President, he has the power to decide which laws to enforce"
Sounds like Authoritarianism Bernie
It could be if done to restrict personal freedom. This measure enhances it, as i previously explained.
Obama grabbed lots of executive power and Congress sat by and the media fawned. Now, that executive power is in new hands. The President has a phone and a pen. They were left for him by Obama.
And you have a legal precedent for that in the constitution Mr Disbarred Attorney ?
If Democrats want DACA to continue, all they have to do is prevail in Congress.
Trump did not "end" the DACA program. He passed off the responsibility of formulating policy to the branch of government where it belongs; the US Congress. And he gave them 6 months to deal with the problem.

One has to remember that to Democrats, especially liberal ones, the Constitution doesn't matter. Obama made up stuff up as he went along, such has DACA, carving out exemptions and exceptions that make a mockery of the separation of powers and constitutional rights.
Also, the tortured logic and reasoning used by federal judges to overturn Trump executive orders such as the travel ban last winter previously came down to a simple idea; federal judges know better than the president of the United States how best to protect the country. The Supreme Court will almost certainly see the issue differently, but that's where we are now.
Democrats are directly challenging the power and authority of the chief executive that has routinely been exercised since the founding of our republic. The carefully crafted separation of powers that give the president broad authority to protect the people has been trampled on by liberal activist federal judges - mostly Democrats - who refuse to acknowledge their side lost the election, or worse, hold a personal animus against the president.

Incorrect. Outright disinformation. As Hamilton observed in Federalist #74, the pardon power is virtually unbridled. President Washington used it to pardon the participants of the whiskey rebellion. That blanket power has been upheld by the Supreme Court. US v Klein (80 US 128). You don't know what you are talking about.
