There's a new Sheriff in town, so you better watch out! He's Bethlehem Police Commissioner Randy Miller, who was introduced by Northampton County Exec John Stoffa and Court Administrator James Onembo during a news conference yesterday. Miller's unanimous selection is the result of unprecedented cooperation between the executive and judicial branches."I'm very honored to have been selected," said Sheriff Miller. "I'm very excited about it."
Miller is the final choice of nearly forty applicants. Ten of them went through for an initial round of interviews, after which the list was whittled down to a final four.
During the second round of interviews, President Judge Kim McFadden joined Stoffa, Onembo and Director of Administration John Conklin in talking to the candidates. According to Stoffa, "Randy was our unanimous choice out of those four folks who were interviewed. And if I might say, they were all excellent ... excellent candidates." Noting there were even candidates from other states, Stoffa joked, "I don't know why everybody wants to be Sheriff."
It's the badge. And those cool hats.Court Administrator Onembo agreed with Stoffa that "all the candidates are top notch."
Miller's starting salary is $76,977. That's not as much as a corrections officer, but it's still pretty good.
Stoffa and Judge McFadden's joint recommendation will now go to County Council, which will consider confirmation on November 20th. "I'm hoping they'll go along with it," noted Stoffa.
What about Chief Deputy? That's a career service position, and will be posted for internal application on November 23. Stoffa indicated that since the new Sheriff comes from the outside, he'd prefer an insider to take over as Chief Deputy. "I know there's more than one person who can do that." The interview team for that position will consist of Director of Administration John Conklin, Sheriff Miller and Court Administrator Onembo.

So the correction officers make more then the sherrif and the sherrif makes more than the COunty Exec? What does Rendell make, minimum wage?
Next year Stoffa, County Council and Barron all get a plump raise.

Stoffa does not treat the Sheriff as a member of his Cabinet. The Sheriff is never invited to his Cabinet meetings, nor does he report to County Council like the rest of Stoffa's Cabinet during sessions. The Sheriff reports through the Director of Administration John Conklin.
76 K is LESS than a corrections officer? That means corrections officers are making pretty good money. I am getting touch with my son, a cop with a BS in Criminal Justice, act 120 and much more, plus 16 years working "on the street". He makes no where near that kind of money! Something is lopsided here and it explains a lot about the tax increase.

Good luck Sheriff Miller with that basket of snakes. He has a rep as a tough, no-nonsense guy. Maybe he'll restore a sense of honor and duty to that force.

He's done a better job with Bethlehem cops than the Keystone variety we have in Easton and A-town. I get the feeling the wheel has turned in NorCo.
Miller is a great pick and the sheriffs should be happy, he will give them a fair shake.
I feel Stoffa won't be happy cause Randy will shoot straight and make clear the crap Stoffa is putting the sheriffs through.
Maybe we can get back on the professionalism track that was de-railed when the Stoffa train pulled in.
How long before the biggest courthouse gossip of them all - Lance Wheeler - begs for a job? Hope Miller sends him packing, and tells him to turn in his badge. Nobody can stand that weasel anymore.

Some members of Council and Barron don't get that raise until 2012. Those payraises are long overdue. Especially since it has been almost 20 years.
Taxpayers will make a point of bringing up those payraises!
We get laid off and they give themselves 35% pay increases.

He never put a resume in for the Sheriff, nor will he for Chief Deputy.
Just to clear the air about Northampton County Correction Officers, the starting pay is about 30k, and after 11 years, they top out at 46k. This exagerrated number everyone is quoting includes overtime from a particular individual who practically lives there.
