Linden Street Bridge to Close for Repairs

Lehigh County's public information officer, Gloria McVeigh, has a news release about the Linden Street Bridge.

Allentown, PA April 8, 2008 – The Linden Street Bridge will be closed to traffic on Monday, April 14, 2008 for repairs by Lehigh County. Plans call for the bridge reconstruction project to be completed by the fall of 2009. Drivers will detour around the bridge which stretches between American Parkway and 4th Street.

Currently, the Linden Street Bridge is weight- and lane-restricted due to extensive deterioration. One of many Pennsylvania structures long overdue for repairs, the Bridge will be replaced under a plan by Lehigh County Executive, Donald T. Cunningham, Jr. As part of his commitment to improving the County’s infrastructure, Cunningham is investing $10.5 million in revitalizing local crumbling bridges.

Isn’t it true that with a little patience repairs to this bridge could have been covered by the state?

if you call five years "patience", then yes. the bridge was less than two years from being completely shut down.

The bridge was in the TIP program, but....that doesn't assure timely completion. The General Morgan Bridge in Slatington is FINALLY being replaced, after 20 years of Pendot promises. PENDOT YEARS can be like DOG YEARS. This repair project was approved by the LC Commissioners by an 8-1 vote almost a year ago with the assurance that the bridge would be replaced in two years time. Have you ever been underneath this bridge to examine it? I have. It's not a pretty sight. And with no safety assurances by Pendot, after repeated questioning in committee, the county moved to replace this bridge and have a new bridge in service by the end of 2009.
