Easton City Council member Pete Melan, who has served for two terms, has announced his candidacy for Mayor. He believes the Mayor, who is the Executive branch, should have no vote on City Council.

Unfortunately Melan doesn’t understand the government. Easton is administered by a full time administrator. He makes more money than the mayor. Problem is the media including this blogger constantly go to Panto on any city issue. Panto should defer on many questions but answers taking away the prominence of the administrator. Mayor and council serve as a check on the power of the administrator. That’s how the government should work. Panto having been a strong mayor may have difficulty in assuming the new role. That should be the campaign issue. Remember, Easton goes on after the Pantos and the Melans. Don’t discourage anyone from running. Eventually Panto will not be mayor. You want an individual who has taken an interest in the city and is a clean candidate. Obviously this person served for eight years. Wants to move up. If he moves on the city ultimately loses someone with experience. As far as odds on an election. In the last, an officeholder with a last name of Vulcano lost to an unknown. Voters do change. I would expect that the current mayor will continue. I wouldn’t bet everything on it.

I have not spoken to Panto in many years. He and I do not see eye-to-eye. I have no idea what the hell you're talking about, and you obviously don't either.
Sultana beat vulcano by 24 votes. Volcano didnt knock one door, place one sign or solicit one vote. She dod not want to run, but got on the ballot so sultana wasnt unopposed.
Mr. O’Hare, The go to Panto was not intended to insult you. The common mistake made is that Easton is a city like Allentown and Bethlehem and has a mayor with similar powers. Not so in Easton. Easton adopted a charter that removed powers from the mayor and vested those powers in a manager type person. Credit and blame is often wrongly assigned to the mayor where it should be attributed to the city administrator or a director. Panto was a good choice to transition the city from its former government to the present organization and form. Hopefully he has allowed that independence in city operations to develop. The charter gives employee appointment powers to the administrator where those powers were traditionally held by the mayor. The charter is specific with the duties and responsibilities of the mayor. Melan’s comments demonstrate either a lack of understanding of the charter or a problem with the present mayor’s relationship with the supervision of city employees and supervisors. I am not blind to your many previous comments about Easton’s mayor. I wanted to set the record straight as to how the city operates and where credit and blame are due. I will be the first to accept the fact that I don’t know what I am talking about, but I don’t think so on this issue.
We need term limits for every position on a referendum. Council members need to get off for at least one term after 2 . To re run. We need to adjust how retirement income is dispersed on a sliding scale . We need to separate Mayor from Administrator so it’s so “congruent “. It’s bad political settings without checks and balances. No city employee should continue in another job and retire twice anymore. Restrictions on vehicles are needed now,fuel prices are high. No city vehicle should idle without emergency status for more than a short period. Realtor signs from another Twp. Need a permit per sign on City of Easton venue. Easton sale signs are open and free. Enforcement of speed on Lafayette Street needs absolute attention, and Cattel ,it crazy . Need residential sticker campaign now on upper Cattel and Raub street , remember when we started this here? We picked up 200 new tax payers as result and should cross reference with rental apartments that may be illegal under code. We have to control stuff ,there moving in.

I gave Mr. Stectman several things not brought up by any council person after years in position. 1 , was , get vehicle plate I’d by software, my thought, get code up to snuff on inspections of known rentals and spin software to cross reference tax issues. So we got some started . Now whole state checks registered vehicles same way with new stuff now. I knew it would be good for my Constable warrant service if they did to recover parking fines . But Mayor stopped adjudication of parking tickets because after Judge Ellwell died we got subs and than Judge Griffo who let people off to much . So mayor probably has $150,000 in potential costs not recovered from parking now. You have to ask - I’ve been gone for several years. But I was the guy to bring out the boots. City had 3 ,they were in a closet. I told Steckman ,then they needed 2 months of votes to uses them , then city didn’t know how to : so they didn’t know who would deploy them .police ,parking ? What a Custer fuck. I said , I would I know where your cars are parked. Nope not me . I retired out as result ,made $4,100 or so last month on parking tickets - so long .Leadership is an art form. Remember that when you all vote next.
Sandy Vulcano had a huge head like her departed husband and never thought she could be beat…. I know people who worked on her campaign who begged her to do more. Same thing could or will happen to Panto sooner or later
