Pennsylvania's Department of Health requires that nursing home residents receive a minimum of 2.7 hours of nursing home care every day. It's known as the Per Patient Day, or PPD. As a result of staffing shortages, Gracedale has been struggling to meet this minimum. Its PPD has been closer to 2.5. But according to Executive Lamont McClure, that figure is finally starting to go up.
Gracedale has taken a number of measures to improve daily nursing care, from reducing census to offering $2,500 bonuses for 12 months of work.
Are these measures working? If the daily PPD is any indication, they are. McClure listed daily PPDs as follows: 6/6 - 2.86; 6/7 - 2.95; 6/8 - 3.12; 6/9 - 2.74; 6/10 - 2.68; 6/11 - 2.91; 6/12 - 2.71; 6/13- 2.87; & 6/14 - 2.81. All of these exceed the minimum PPD.
In addition to the increase in daily nursing care, there's been a corresponding drop in FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) absences. In April, FMLA at Gracedale was a whopping 40%. In May, it was jut 21% and is on track to be 20% in June.

Fewer patients = increased per patient cost. I wonder how Gracedale compares to industry averages. This should be closely monitored. There isn't an endless supply of money, and the federal Dumbo drop money will soon be gone. There is going to be a financial reckoning at Gracedale. We just keep pushing the problem down the road.
You can praise him all you want. Until he and the loser Administration are gone, Gracedale will not improve.

They have improved. Still cited with staffing deficiency during inspection last week but noted they improved. Problem is 2.7 is not enough to provide care. Need at least 3.3 to actually meet residents needs. Surveys are going easy on providers as they know the effect COVID has had but it's unfortunate because care matters even through the pandemic. Grateful it's better for the residents sake but it's not enough. Still not getting the assist with bathing grooming toileting turning and positioning as they should according to staff. Not sure if they started taking admissions again. Should be able to first care for residents they already have.

How does abysmal care changed to potentially less abysmal care as measured in a number translate into actual care given to a resident. The availability of care on a piece of paper does not necessarily mean adequate or even any increase in care is given. Sadly, the best determinants of quality and amount of care given are the consistent visits and vigilance of family and friends of a resident and also the ability of the resident to ask for and effectively advocate to have needs met. Gracedale, however, is also a political football and the abysmal lack of care and ineptness or will of our regulatory systems to assure care to residents in both public and private facilities is shameful. But oh, how nice these places are decorated for the holidays!
