Who's Our Next President?

I have no idea who our next President is going to be, but I think we can cross both Donald Trump and Joe Biden off the list. Well before his election, Trump has consistently shown himself to be morally unfit for our nation's highest office. He has been more of a mob boss than a statesman. Joe Biden has shown himself to be both incompetent and completely unwilling to listen to the more moderate voices from within his own party.  His problem, as a former Senator, is that he wants everyone to like him. He tries to be all things to all people. He has ended up being nothing to anyone. Americans are highly unlikely to put up with either in 2024.

No real statesman from either party is waiting in the wings. Republicans do have a slightly better field, but only marginally so.  I'd like to spell out here what qualities I'd like to see in our next President.

Gravitas. - That presidential quality went to hell in a handbag once Trump was elected. It has failed to make a return under Biden. I do understand he has a speech impediment, but some of his remarks have been downright gibberish.  Former Presidents in my lifetime have all had dignity. Whether it was Richard Nixon or Harry Truman, it was there.

Ethics. -  We need to return to a time in which our elected leaders displayed a basic honesty about their office. This has been missing from both parties in recent years.

True Bipartisanship. - Peg Ferraro was a Republican member of NorCo Council for many years. She used to note that, once an election is over, it's time to put party politics aside and govern. The last President who was able to govern from the middle was Bill Clinton.

Humility. - Trump liked to refer to himself as a "stable genius." Obama could be cold and condescending, although he was willing to laugh at himself.  Bush displayed humility at times in office.

Of the Republicans, I think Ron DeSantis looks like the most likely nominee. Of the Democrats, the only thing of which I'm sure is that Biden is out.

I saw a tweet today describing republicans as mass shooters and democrats as Uvalde cops

Pretty accurate

We don’t need established democrats, we need more candidates like AOC

Yup, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is my pick for president. She encompasses all the traits you mentioned and is committed to giving ALL people rights, not just straight Christian white men

Oh, and all you racist conservatives can suck on my corn dog in advance

It is incredible to me that there aren't better leaders stepping up to fill this vacuum. We are better than this.

While I agree with much of what you wrote, I don’t elect a president as a moral compass. With that said, Trump is an ass. I am amazed that he still has such a devoted following, though I am repulsed by the flag-waving loonies who see him as some sort of messiah. Joe Biden, as I have posted before, is a well-known liar who was only elected because he wasn’t Trump. Heck, Obama waited until the last possible moment to endorse him. As for nominees? I would love to see true moderates of both parties. Manchin, Klobuchar, Cheney. Truman was an EXCELLENT former president because he refused to sit on boards and/or give paid speeches because he didn’t want to profit from the presidency. The presidential pension was established for him and I *believe* he was the last president who didn’t die a millionaire. I have always loved Harry.

I do know this, if Trump decides to run for the office again, I would most definitely vote for him! He not only deserves a return after all the shenanigans done to remove him, but he is the person most likely to repair all the damages done to this nation by the current Democrats in power. This country has been brought to its knees by radical liberals and worse. We are in real jeopardy at this time. Really, a serious turnaround is needed. That’s not happening with more Democrats in the White House or in Congress.

DeSantis 2024/2028

If President Trump decides not to run - and being a second-term president limits what he can do, so there's plausible reason to think he may not do so - then Gov DeSantis is a shoo-in.

Don't count Trump out yet, he was written off when he dissed John MCCain, when the bush people released the Hollywood tape, and numerous other times. He actually did make America better, Had policies that were in the best interest of the whole country. lets let him finish the job.

Republicans have a slightly better field?? Ron DeSantis?? Are you joking?? Gee why not put Gregg Abbot of Texas in there to for a little more insanity. Or how about Scott Perry or some of the other nut jobs? That's the Republican party now for the base. But you're right, Democrats like John Tester or Sherrod Brown, sane, politically popular from red states are a weaker field...say what?? Biden should stand down like LBJ. Tester or Brown should use the bully pulpit effectively and have better advisors. Also, the Republicans in the Senate who are simply obstructionists with no policy proposals need to stay a minority and we need a couple more Dem senators to get policies passed for the people. Let's actually pass things that the majority of people want. Much of what they want are Dem priorities. Biden won't even use his executive orders to get shit done. He's proven to be too cowardly.

Hogan from Maryland fits the bill, but far to moderate/sane to survive the Republican primary

Bill Clinton governed from the middle only during is second term. Why he changed is open to debate. Obama ruined the Democratic Party while Trump ruined the Republicans. I wish both of them would just go away.

The conjecture I hear is that Gavin Newsome will be the Dem pick in 2024 to run against DiSantis. Just a continuation of the problems. Until then we have to endure each side trying to put up their most polarizing candidates...Fetterman - Really?...Masteriano - Really?

I fear for our country.

If its Trump, you can probably stick with Biden and still win, but would be a 3rd straight election with sub optimal choices.

If Republicans turn the page on Trump, its almost certainly DeSantis.

Dems would best avoid a Bernie Sanders type for sure and skip many of the current Senate lifers as well.

Manchin would have some cross over appeal, but certainly wouldn't "excite the base" as they say and likely create some suicidal 3rd party candidate from the far left.

A Democratic Governor from the south or mid west/rust belt would probably work best.

Jared Polis (CO)
Laura Kelly (KS)
Gretchen Whitmer (MI)
Tim Walz (MN)
Roy Cooper (NC)
Tony Evers (WI)
_____
Steve Bullock (MT)* his term ended in 2021 and ran for the Dem Presidential nom early in the 2020 cycle, before attempting to run for senate, which he lost, so he may be viewed as damaged goods.

the only non-politician Donald Trump. He will fix inflation, gas prices will come way down, the border will improve big time, foreign countries will fear us again, remember the mother of all bombs the foreign countries do. trade will become on our side; Trump will improve our lives in so many ways imagine how he would handle these shortages and the airlines. He would solve those problems because he is not like Biden or any other politician of our time.

6:15 am: At least where I am concerned, your “suck my corndog” phrase negates any sense you may have made in your post. It is posts like yours that highlight the problems in America generally, politics specifically. Civil, respectful sharing of opinions is no longer allowed, thus why many sensible moderates choose not to throw their hats in the ring.

Larry Hogan would be an excellent election candidate, but as 9:39AM correctly points out, he would not pass the purity test for much of the GOP base.

@7:37 - you have a very warped image and understanding of America if you believe even half of what you typed out there. Your thinking that Trump solves the problem of "radical liberals", shows that you have no clue about how government works or how to fit into society.

I vote both parties, expect for two positions: I always vote for a Democrat for President because of the Supreme Court. I always vote for a Democrat for any Judicial position because s/he may one day, go onto a higher court: even possibly the Supreme Court.

A previous finger-in-socket response about DeSantis speaks volumes. Dems are scared to death of Heavy D. An actual military record, no authoritarian lockdowns and better CoViD performance than blue states. He hasn't raised or showered with any drug addicted offspring like the current commander-in-creep. What's not to love? It's DeSantis' to lose.

I will vote for a Democratic Bernie Sanders. This is what our country needs. We need to show how much everyone pays in taxes like we did in the 1920’s . Time to get back to working for America prosperity, fair wages $25 hr, free health benefits, defined pension benefits,15 paid holidays per year and your birthday off like the (ILGWU) had for their members. Starting vacation time 4 weeks, unemployment benefits for 52 weeks and everyone who makes over $5,000,000 will fund this way of life and build up our infrastructure. How can this happen? Well let’s tax everyone who makes $1 over $5,000,000 at 100%. That would mean everyone on this blog would not be effected, time to wake up and start working for a better America.

Let's look at all that is wrong right now.
And let's look back 2 years ago.
Which would you take?

by all means have trump run again.
Biden beat him like a rented mule.
Biden won by a landslide as trump disgusted the majority of voters.
trump and Desantis can bash each other and divide the republicans even more.
Course Desantis might get an edge when trumpie does his perp walk.
Or lunatic Scott another loon.
Makes it all the easier for the Democrats.
Face it--trump has fouled the republican party so much the funk will take ten years to disperse.
But the republicans have a chance to replace the maga candidates with adults and if they do that they might have a chance

Desantis is not Trump. Desantis went to Yale on a baseball scholarship. He graduated from Harvard law school. He served in the Navy as JAG Officer where he was the legal advisor to SEAL Team One in Baghdad. He also served as a assistant US attorney. You don't have to agree with his politics, but to say he's a younger Trump is way off base, he's smarter than Trump when he's sleeping. He's a little to "in your face" for my liking, but I think he would make a formidable presidential candidate.

Chris E (Nazareth) said...

His odds may have slipped somewhat recently. But sadly Trump is the best bet for not only the R nomination but also the presidency. He’s basically bulletproof in the eyes of his base, and the more centrist R’s won’t not vote republican.
Desantis would be the next safest bet. I believe the D’s have very little chance of keeping the presidency. I hope the D’s have some sort of dark horse candidate but I doubt it. They have been so disappointing.

Must be a republican, with guts, not too many out there the guy from Florida could be a good one, his policies are 1000 times better than democratic garbage.

Your corn dog seems salty

More importantly, if Trump runs again who will be his VP? Who wants to fly on Airforce 2 badly enough they'll risk being thrown to a violent mob if things go south?

Harris would make a fine democratic president right Bernie?

Bernie O'Hare said...

"the only non-politician Donald Trump. "

He's as blatantly political as they get.

You're in a cult, wake up!

Kasich/Dent would be a good team. Whitmer/Booker.. I like moderates.

As a Republican, I'm hoping for Marco Rubio, the Senator from Florida. I like his political positions, his demeanor and his youthfulness. I feel his family's experiences embody the American spirit. I wonder if Governor DeSantis's platform would be a bit too polarizing for the nation, I could absolutely see Rubio as President.

If only life were so simple - much like your mind - much of what happened 2-4 years ago, under the watch of your Cheeto Jesus is why so much is wrong right now, but keep on believin'!

Little Marco? Give me a break!. in fact all of the Republicans are a joke and we need to get religion out of our politics.

@7:04: Florida, it's not the heat it's the stupidity and Marco is one of them...

You’re attempting to tone police me because you don’t like “how” I’m saying well the time for formal language is over because Christian conservative white men are waging a war against everyone who doesn’t look, talk or believe in their imaginary diety. You may fall into this cookie cutter interpretation of what an American should be but I sure don’t. This is life or death for me. I said what I said.

9:54 Don C is no better then the glorified and vilified politicians we currently have in office. It is well documented that he and the Economic development group gave a Chinese company setting up shop in the valley a substantial amount of money. Then he went ahead and took a board position on the same company raking in many thousands of dollars. That is the problem with many that we allow them to get away with this an they who write the laws have written them in the way that it is allowable to get away with it.

Those with Scruples would not think of doing it but those who are power or money wiggle through the legal slats to rake in the cash. This can be applied to so many locally, at the state level and most definitely at the federal level.

I'm saying Gov. Phil Murphy or NC Gov. Roy Cooper on the Dem side. I like Biden (inflation is WORLDWIDE, if you make any effort to check) but he's aged out of it. VP Harris has almost no national support; and Eliz Warren? Ha! On the R side Maryland's Hogan or maybe Youngkin of VA would do. Please note, you freedom-lovers out there, that DeSantis in FL has used state power to muzzle opposition like Orban in Hungary does, that is NOT American Jeffersonian freedom.
