What Would You Like to See at Minsi Lake?

How would you like to see the area around Minsi Lake developed? Would you like to see more active recreation opportunities or prefer the hiking trails to remain the way they are? Northampton County is seeking public input for its Minsi Lake Corridor Greenway and Stewardship Plan on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM at the Pocono-Slate Belt Shooting Association’s Clubhouse, 744 Lake Minsi Drive, Bangor, PA. This meeting can be accessed online or by phone at 1-412 447-5128 (Conference ID: 855 183 688# - audio only) The final plan will be presented and the community is invited to comment.

As explained in a county news release, the approximate 3.7 mile long corridor is located in the northeast corner of Northampton County in Upper Mount Bethel Township. The Corridor’s contiguous 1,100 acres of land is owned or leased by Northampton County, PA Fish & Boat Commission and The Nature Conservancy. It  includes Minsi Lake, the Gerald E. Seyfried Bear Swamp and Archery Complex, and the Totts Gap Conservation Area.

Today, the Minsi Lake Corridor provides opportunities for fishing, non-motorized boating, hiking, walking, birdwatching, archery and hunting. The corridor is home to a complex network of flora and fauna and environmentally sensitive lands.  The Stewardship Plan will address the compatibility of outdoor recreation with the conservation of sensitive environmental habitats. It will include recommendations for an interconnected system of passive recreation infrastructure and conservation initiatives linked by a system of trails.

The County retained the team of Simone Collins Landscape Architecture of Norristown, PA, and Resource Environmental Solutions, LLC (RES) to prepare the plan.

The final draft of the Minsi Lake Corridor Greenway and Stewardship Plan will be presented at the meeting on January 12th. The public is invited to attend and comment. Information will be posted on the County’s  website and the Facebook page NorCo Parks and Trails.

Leave it alone. Passive. Have the trails there left as they are in nature with nature.

I've gone there for years and have never seen a Minsi. It would be nice to see them reintroduced. I miss Ron Angle.

They brought in an architect which means they will want to place hardscape to maximize the payout to them, the engineer etc. Passive recreation doesn't pay the bills. Most likely end up with a paved trail around the lake with other structures and a nice manicured lawn and more paved parking up to the waters edge. None of these have a positive impact to the aquatic ecosystem. People will jump up and down about the Nazareth poop farm and not give this a second look. For once I'll be more aligned with the Judy Henkel mentality. Let's look at moving backwards and make it more wild.

A NO NUMAN zone would be a great thing!

Clearly you haven't bothered to take even a minimal look at this Greenway Plan, which specifically spells out the opposite of what you so fear and dread and blather on about. Rather than take time to actually review the plan, you rattle on in conspiratorial tones about the landscape architect's ploy for "maximizing payout" by prescribing paved trails and manicured landscapes-the exact opposite of what's actually spelled out in the plan. What a lazy "basshole" you are, Billy.

Just leave it alone. No paved anything. If necessary, use crushed stone for paths. They will ruin th place of you let them. So, please just allow it to be pristine.

Couple of warehouses?

There's been paved parking lots and entranceways at Minsi Lake since 1971. Who is "they" that will ruin the place if we let them? In case you didn't know, Minsi Lake is manmade. And the entire Minsi Lake Greenway has been logged and farmed from the 1800s to today. So beautiful as the Greenway is, it ain't been a "pristine" landscape in well over 150 years.

Whatever they come up with I hope it doesn't include trails that attract people which means more litter and more dog shit. The only shit I want to see there is from a fox or some other wild critter. And don't think baggie stations help as folks just drop the filled baggies along the trail. Housenick in Bethlehem Township has become unbelievable and the county owned part below the mansion not better. Area has been turned into an unofficial "dog park."

Maybe Nazareth Borough Municipal Authority can work out a deal to spread their sewage sludge on this property, just like they are planning to spread it next to recreation facilities in Plainfield Township. I mean, according to them, its the best thing for the land and won't stink out the neighboring properties. I don't know why everyone doesn't buy in and take some of Nazareth's shit.

At one time the entire area was a get-a-way for numerous outdoorsy folks. Fishermen, photographers, hikers, boaters, kayakers, canoeist, birdwatchers, etc. all enjoyed the natural surroundings found at the Lake. Also the area includes one of the finest (in its time) Public Archery Complexes in the state of Pennsylvania. Tournaments were held there annually and thousands of archers came from all over the east coast to take part in the competitions. Not only was the Lake neglected until recently, the most used public archery facility in the Country was neglected to the point where its an eyesore. Think about this, the facility boasted an Olympic Range, a field course, a 3-D course, a practice range, and a pavilion for picnickers. Restore the Archery Complex so 35,000 Northampton County sportsmen can again spend a day in the wild shooting their bows and enjoying what nature has to offer. We pay taxes too.

1:02 Ouch! Basshole Billy here. Considering I work with architects and engineers on projects in the municipal world, I have first hand experience in the game. You are correct, I didn't even look at the plan. Sorry to hurt your feelings.

Basshole Billy, considering you "work with architects and engineers on projects in the municipal world," you might wanna take a look at plans before you comment on them. Wowza.

Another whiner who hasn't bothered to look at the plan before making a comment about it. Renovating the archery complex at Bear Swamp is spelled out in plain English and in readable typeface in the plan. Jeez Louise. Can you guys exercise even the least due diligence before making a comment on something with which you are clearly unfamiliar? We really are a lazy ass, whiney society.

Basshole here, you overachievers wanna provide a link? I'm just not that motivated to look for it myself. In fact, I'm going to blame BO for not going the extra mile here too.
Plan schman, I'm currently working on a project with local state and private industry. Cost overruns and changes orders, oh my. Every time we do a walkthrough we keep adding items that are either incomplete or not done to spec. I'm glad you have a plan but don't believe it till you see it.
So, if you don't mind, please provide a link to said plan. Thanks in advance.
