Paul Harvey's "If I Were the Devil"

At church on Sunday, one of my readers was blessed by the preacher with a rendition of Paul Harvey's "If I Were the Devil." His original broadcast of this essay was in 1964, but he updated it a few times, and below is an updated version:

“If I were the prince of darkness, I would want to engulf the whole world in darkness. I’d have a third of its real estate and four-fifths of its population, but I would not be happy until I had seized the ripest apple on the tree — thee. So, I would set about however necessary to take over the United States.

“I’d subvert the churches first, and I would begin with a campaign of whispers. With the wisdom of a serpent, I would whisper to you as I whispered to Eve: ‘Do as you please.’

“To the young, I would whisper that the Bible is a myth. I would convince the children that man created God instead of the other way around. I’d confide that what’s bad is good and what’s good is square. And the old, I would teach to pray after me, ‘Our Father, which art in Washington ...’

"Then, I’d get organized, I’d educate authors in how to make lurid literature exciting so that anything else would appear dull and uninteresting. I’d peddle narcotics to whom I could. I’d sell alcohol to ladies and gentlemen of distinction. I’d tranquilize the rest with pills.

“If I were the devil, I’d soon have families at war with themselves, churches at war with themselves and nations at war with themselves until each, in its turn, was consumed. And with promises of higher ratings, I’d have mesmerizing media fanning the flames.

“If I were the devil, I would encourage schools to refine young intellect but neglect to discipline emotions. I’d tell teachers to let those students run wild. And before you knew it, you’d have drug-sniffing dogs and metal detectors at every schoolhouse door. With a decade, I’d have prisons overflowing and judges promoting pornography. Soon, I would evict God from the courthouse and the schoolhouse and then from the houses of Congress. In his own churches, I would substitute psychology for religion and deify science. I’d lure priests and pastors into misusing boys and girls and church money.

“If I were the devil, I’d take from those who have and give to those who wanted until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious. What’ll you bet I couldn’t get whole states to promote gambling as the way to get rich?

“I’d convince the young that marriage is old-fashioned, that swinging is more fun and that what you see on television is the way to be. And thus, I could undress you in public and lure you into bed with diseases for which there are no cures.

“In other words, if I were the devil, I’d just keep right on doing what he’s doing.”

Considering today's society, I'd say Mr. Harvey was spot on. America: rolling downhill like a snowball headed for hell.

Wow,1964 ,that’s insight.

A perfect description of the liberal mindset. Wake up America!

Real shock here. Paul Harvey the bastion of the old conservative ways was freaked out in 1964. Blacks protesting their plight, women demanding respect. Kids were standing up to their parents and of course to the status quo and that was the work of Satan.

The old right wing bunker hoarders love this shit Bernie. This has been updated a few times to fit the times. Insight indeed!

Nothing really earth shattering here. They made the words fit the times.

Nothing here but fear of changing times and people not accepting the old ways of segregation, white male rule and the moneyed class running the country.

No wonder some fundamentalist preacher on Sunday and whore it up dude on Saturday was preaching this up;. The terrified Trumpsters lap this shit yup as though it has some insight.

Many ultimate insiders were scare as shot in the mid sixties and wanted nothing to do with progress. So lets say it was all Satan.

What a crook of shit. Next time go with the Long Island medium. Her shtick is at least entertaining. Insight my ass.

Sounds like the radical left wing democratic party

While folks will portray this as "old crusty conservatives" whining (See @5:36), the funny thing is that I have seen many younger folks pick up on this speech, including the original.

This country is splitting down the middle. On one hand, we have those who celebrate the degeneracy, and those who realize that it is a cancer that is undermining our nation, and indeed our civilization. Look at the rising popularity of youth like Nicholas Fuentes.

Unfortunately, America as it stands may be "done". The experiment has run its course. Look at the insanity of our national politics, the rampant grift in government, the absolute power of financial capitalism and global oligarchs...It may be time to start planting the seeds for the new nation.

As a substitute teacher I once was assigned to show a video of a colony of some sort of animal in a closed terrestrial system … That Colony in the 1st generation started out with enthusiasm and much energy … Through the years the population picked up … But through the generations there was a noticeable change in the nature of the colony … It developed less energy and stagnated … And then declined... Even in the animal colony , colony members became lazy and depended on others to help … And there are other human features we see now that developed in the animal colony in its last days.

O am going to do an alternative "If I were the devil" from a different perspective.

It does seem that most countries start out hungry and disciplined to survive, but when they become affluent, and no longer self disciplined, they decline into leisure, degeneracy and then ultimately to collapse. This can come from within or from an opponent who is more disciplined more hungry. We seem to be suffering from the first for sure, the later may be on the horizon.

Nice try to revise history.

Conservatives, in particular Republican conservatives, were fairly busy in 1964 trying to get the Civil Rights Act of that year passed over DEMOCRAT objections.

Bernie with a post about a church sermon?

Maybe it's time to spend a few Sundays there in person, and think about what you're missing.

Good point. not sure if this explains the decline and fall of the Roman Empire (after nearly a millennium) or whether it suddenly had just become too big. There certainly was a decline in morality by many early emperors, but there were also several brilliant and virtuous emperors. Augustus, who insisted on being called First Citizen instead of Emperor, insisted on public morality, but he was a phony, just as many churchgoers are phonies. Trajan, Marcus Aurelius, Hadrian, and two or three other still had personal honor.

I believe what sustained Rome was not its virtue, but its legions. What sustains us is not our morality (we have none), but our military.

If you spend your time looking at who is there and who is not, you'll get nothing out of it.

That legislation was being pushed by LBJ, a Democrat. There was opposition by southern Democrats, the Dixiecrats, who eventually joined the GOP.

I will add that the GOP was certainly a force for civil rights under Lincoln and Grant, while Democrats tended to be southern sympathizers. That situation has since reversed itself for some reason.

But the Bible is a myth and is found in the Fiction section of the book store

Of course it was LBJ, confirmed racist and white supremacist, who was in office when the Civil Rights Bill of 1964 was passed and twisted its passage greatly to the political benefit for the Democrats. He also would use the N-word to describe the bill, one of his appointments to the Supreme Court, his chauffer and just about any other black person he encountered.

Maybe you mean former Senator Robert Byrd, Democrat (WV) and former Exalted Cyclops of the KKK? I believe he filibustered against the 1964 Civil Rights Act and still served as the Democrat leader (maybe their Exalted Cyclops?) in the Senate until his death in 2010.

Or maybe you mean Republicans like Margaret Sanger, the racist founder of Planned Parenthood, who didn't "want the word to go out that they wanted to exterminate the Negro population"? Here I thought that today's republicans were against that and it was the modern Democrats who embraced Planned Parenthood's mission.

What sustains us is life, liberty, and pursuit of property.

In such a foil my righteousness would shine brightly and I'd thank the Devil's maker for the opportunity to reveal my virtue, for in his sight I am darkness.

Exactly. Nov.8th's blog was brought to my attention. The REAL story is the County greedily conspired to destroy the sanctuary home, lives, future and finances of the taxpayers that had children next door to the Union St. home that depreciated their chances of a fair chance to sell at the very least without a loss of thousands of dollars. They are the real victims. To the woman suggesting eminent domain-pray that County never has a twinkle in their eye when they look at your house. A million dollars wouldn't make up for how horribly County neglected their property to drive them out including the reported gas leak that took the gas Co. 2 days w tons of workers to keep the city from blowing to smithereens!

Not...I happened to know the family who were Grandfathered in to that home. I swear to God I have nothing to do with anyone who is fighting that fight. I'm a friend of the victims. So stop trying to debunk anything I say.
