"No Labels" Behind the Edwards and Wild Attacks

Rev. Greg Edwards
It started like a minuet, but is quickly becoming a donnybrook. I'm speaking, of course, about the Lehigh Valley's Democratic Congressional primary. The negativity started when Allentown Attorney Sue Wild broke her word to fellow candidate John Morganelli and blasted him with distortions and outright lies. She continued her attack in two recent emails dunning her supporters for money. "[O]ur biggest competition is a Democrat who supports Donald Trump," she lies about Morganelli. She also enlisted the assistance of Emily's List, which will air TV ads and five direct mail pieces tarnishing Morganelli. Now candidate Greg Edwards is getting smacked around, too. Lehigh Valley residents opened their mailboxes this weekend to see a glossy flyer from United Together, attacking Edwards because his wife and children have jobs at his church. And Wild, who started this, is getting her comeuppance on Facebook.

Silly season is officially here.

Who is behind these attacks? Someone has already blamed Morganelli, of course. "Together United Inc is a Right wing Front group that put itself forward as a charity. It has direct ties to Tom Severson. In 2016 Severson used them to attack Phil Armstrong other opposition candidates."

This is utter nonsense.

First, neither Morganelli nor anyone associated with his campaign attacked Greg Edwards, whom John respects.  If John responds to Wild's rants, he'll take responsibility.

Second, Together United really is a legitimate charity, and has no involvement in politics. This mailer comes from United Together, which did not even exist until late 2017.

United Together is a Super PAC tied to a bi-partisan group called No Labels. It describes itself as "a movement for the tens of millions who are fed up with the dysfunction and will no longer put up with a government that does not represent the interests of most Americans." It calls for "a new politics of goals-focused problem solving to our government. … No Labels has never called for people to entirely shed their party affiliations. … As long as they are intellectually honest, we respect conservatives, liberals, and anyone in between who has a sincere desire to address the nation’s problems.”  The honorary No Labels Co-Chairs are Senators Susan Collins (R-Me) and Joe Manchin (D-WV). No Labels credits itself with the House Problem Solver Caucus, a bipartisan group of Congressmen.

The Chicago Sun Times has linked No Labels with United Together and other Super PACs through interviews with donors as well as review of finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission. They show that No Labels financiers have helped start these PACs.

No Labels has its own PAC, and had $331,000 to spend on April 1. It raised no money locally, but did contribute $10,200 to Charlie Dent in 2017.

According to The Chicago Sun TimesNo Labels uses United Together and United for Progress to contribute to Democrats. Contributions to Republicans are funneled through Citizens for a Strong America.

This image is on the facebook page.
United Together was registered with the Federal Elections Commission last year. Its treasurer is Bruce Goren. He is also the treasurer of United for Progress.

According to FEC recordsUnited Together had $826,000 to spend on April 1. Most of this money comes from three sources: Chicago Bulls and White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf ($300,000); John Arnold, the King of Natural Gas, and his wife Laura ($400,000); and former Commissioner of Baseball Alan H Selig, known to most of us as Bud Selig ($125,000).

Though Reinsdorf has contributed to numerous Republicans in Illinois, he also gave $50k to Rahm Emmanuel.

Prior to April 1, United Together spent about $20,000. Much of that went to campaign consulting firm SCR Strategies, based in Charlotte.

According to No Labels, "Our ranks include liberals, conservatives and everyone in between. But we believe true leaders must be willing to come to the center when that’s what it takes to push back on the extremes and push forward ideas that make the American people’s lives better."

So No Labels, through SuperPACs and regular PACs, is behind these attacks. John Morganelli told me he hates this kind of campaigning and would like to see changes in the Citizens United ruling.

so morganelli does not have a PAC?
sure he does.
he deserves credit for being against Citizens United.

He has a candidate’s PAC, just like every other candidate. He has no separate PAC.

well he might have a hard time refusing dark money if he is being attacked by pols that use it.
it is to his credit that he prefers an above board campaign

He is being attacked by Susan Wild, the one candidate who promised she would not.

The sacred "promise". Actually becoming a joke in many circles and does not favor John by any means. Let's hand out towels to mollify the man that alleges his feelings are hurt. Dry the tears and move on. Is this Jr High? But but she promised.

I realize honesty means little to someone who does not sign her name, but it is a very important quality. If Wild broke her word to a fellow lawyer, she will break her word to the public she obviously thinks is beneath her.

Lawyers lie all the time.

Bernie O'Hare said...

Actually, my experience is that good lawyers are painfully honest.

Tell us how he parted the sea and made bread into wine. The tweets to Trump are enough alone but go on your worship and selling us the man will save us from us.

John is going to protect us by making a primary issue out of “banning assault rifles”.
He doesn’t want to take your firearms, he just wants to “ban” them.
We would be statistically safer if John “banned” bicycles. Not take bikes away, he would never do that, just “ban bicycles”.
I’m going to make myself safer by staying home and not voting for any of the primary candidates.
Enough of the fear pandering and transparent political posturing.
It’s making me want to vomit.
I thought I could get behing our Dist. Atty., I was wrong.

Susan's supporters keep saying that they also received a negative Susan mailer over the weekend that was paid for by Morganelli. No one seems to be able to provide proof of this mailer, all saying "it went right in the recycling bin". Any truth to this story that Morganelli actually sent out a negative mailer about Susan?

Bernie is tainted for his friend and okay we get it and he readily tells you. End of story.

“Ban shameless political pandering!”
I choked on my coffee when I read John’’s statement on leading the fight to get “bumpstocks and AR15s off the streets”.
John knows a “bumpstock” has never been used in a crime, any crime, in Northampton County, or Lehigh County - - - or in the state of Pennsylvania.
Not once.
Ever.
I expected so much more than this fear mongering, strawman, political foolery.
The contemp for people’s intelligence took me by surprise.

A crime fighter who begins his fight for higher office by going after the personal properity of law abiding, tax paying, patriotic citizens.
This is a bad joke.
“Let’s out gun ban the gun grabbers.”
Who is running this campaign?

Sunday I received an e-mail from former Mayor Pawlowski's city solicitor Susan Wild's campaign staff.Besides the request for donations the message reported a secretive group was attacking Ms. Wild'd record. The message did not detail the nature of these baseless attacks.

Bernie O'Hare said...

I linked the Facebook page with the attack, which is based on her connection to Fed Ed. I personally do not consider her performance as solicitor was unethical, but there are those who do. I have no sympathy for her because she has engaged in repeated negative campaigning against Jhn Morganelli, and after giving him her word she would keep it clean. She is a liar

The attack comes from No Labels, not John. That is an independent group and not even from the LV. I linked to the attack against her, which occurred on facebook and Instagram. heard about it Saturday, ut was unable to find it until Sunday.

To be clear, there was no piece from John, but he may respond to the attack she launched against him after lying to him and pledging to keep it clean. .

I figured since they all seemed to be conveniently thrown in the recycling bin by those who reportedly received them. I actually think that Susan's supporters are worse than Susan.

No labels, friends of Dent and Kaschich republicans.

I received a mailer from John today in which he defends himself from Wild’s false accusations and points out that her legal career, representing the wealthy and powerful against ordinary people, demonstrates she is no progressive.

I got the flyer from Susan Wild. In it, she states that Morganelli opposes DACA and wants to deport the children of undocumented immigrants. This is a lie, as can be substantiated by numerous of Morganelli's statements, reported in the press.

We already have a President who lies with abandon. Trump is doing "quite well" in giving us more than our Minimum Daily Requirement of Lies. We really don't need another person like Susan Wild to add to this burden.

Unless you are a prosecutor working for the government, or a court appointed lawyer, you are working for people with some money. Morganelli has put more poor people in jail than wealthy people.

Bernie O'Hare said...

Incorrect. There are numerous attorneys who work for people with no money and take a percentage of the award. And there are lawyers who represent ordinary people. that's what Morganelli did in private practice, and as a DA, he has upheld the rights of those same people. In stark contrast, Wild has devoted her legal career to represnting wealthy people who wrong the poor and blue collar folks. In 131 cases in NC, I don't see one in which she represented even one woman who has been knocked around by her significant other. Not one. She has instead represented the wealthy, along with insurance companies, drug companies and corporations.

Last year you said Susan Wild was a fine principled attorney?
Suddenly she has been a bad Apple her entire career?

After I received the United Together mailer, I was very curious about this group and tried to find out more about it using the Google search engine. But this stuff is complicated, and I gave up. So thanks for doing a better investigation than I could, you are good at that sort of thing. (Trying to make themselves sound like "Together United"? So diabolically clever and disgusting).

So I see no reason to doubt my initial suspicions; that someone is trying to tear down Edwards (as the most natural threat to Wild), and surreptitiously blame Morganelli for it. Now, I am no Blue Dog, but I dislike lying and not playing fair. So it may be that I vote for a Blue Dog this time.

Blue Dogs for the gun grab.
Cool.

With your pronouncements you do realize that now people will research Morqanelli's past clients. I hope you are right. One slip up and he can be painted with the same brush you are painting Wild.

Bernie O'Hare said...

Please do. I saw John practice. Unlike your boss, he represented ordinary people and at least one union. He also did criminal defense. He really did fight for his clients, which is why he is DA for a quarter century. I have known him all this time. Your boss lied, not just to a fellow lawyer, but the DA. Not just to the DA, but to my friend. John did not seek her out. She sought him out, and then lied to him. Had she said nothing and waged a nasty campaign, John would have said nothing. But that is not what happened. If you talked her into breaking her word, shame on you. But shame on her for doing so. I did have high respect for her, and it vanished.

United Together may be a legitimate "charity" (if you can define a Super PAC that way), but they certainly seem to be supporting one or more candidates in this fray. If they don't attack John Morganelli, then we can assume it's him. And if so, either he knows exactly what's happening or he's not doing his job as a candidate. If he really wants to disavow them, he's going to have to do more.

Both of the attack ads contain some questionable/misleading information (especially the attack on Greg Edwards), so I think it's safe to say that United Together are not the good guys here.

Anonymous said...

The group that attacked Edwards you claim was by Wild. Well today they attacked Wild. I guess we know who is behind all of this now don't we.

Bernie O'Hare said...

I never claimed Wild had attacked Edwards.

Do you take stupid pills? Did you even read the story? Did you see the donors? John Morganelli had nothing to do with this, You'v already been caught in one lie when you claimed that Severson used this PAC against Phillips. The PAC did not even exist at the time. Now you just flatly make a false assertion.

Interesting that you resort to ad hominem attacks when someone makes a legitimate point that you don't like. There is clearly a difference between saying that United Together so far seems to be supporting Morganelli and saying that Morganelli was involved in organizing or somehow controlling them. If he wants to earn the respect of voters, he should expose the group for what they are, rather than just trying to distance himself without actually doing anything to undo the damage they've done.

In fact, it appears that there's a new political force in town. Now in addition to the right-wing and left-wing extremists, we have the nefarious middies. Great...

Bernie O'Hare said...

It is necessarily impossible to make an ad hominem attack against someone who is too cowardly to ID himself. Also, I am responding to your cowardly ad hominems aimed at Morganelli. How can he expose these outside groups when he knows nothing about them? But unlike Morganelli, Wild does know about Emily's list and has embraced their negative attacks.
