Dertinger Resignation Weakens McClure

If you want a friend in politics, get a dog. Harry Truman once said that about Washington, but it applies everywhere.  Charles Dertinger and Lamont McClure have pretty much been tied at the hip since they both got into Northampton County politics. Over the years, they've been very loyal to each other. So it's shocking to see Dertinger "resign" over what McClure has already acknowledged is his responsibility. You could say that Dertinger just loyally fell on the sword, giving an angry Council the "sacrificial lamb" they demanded,  You could say he needed to go, but it's pretty clear he had no role in either a coding error or pre-election testing that led to the November 7 election debacle. A loyal McClure would refuse to let Deringer depart under these circumstances. This is being sold as firm action, but it solves nothing. In fact, it actually weakens Lamont McClure.

I understand the ager from the public and County Council at the inexcusable failure to handle a core county function. But I'm more interested in fixing the problem than in collecting heads. We know that the county had nothing to do with the coding error that started this fiasco. We also know that ES&S spearheaded the pre-election (called Logic and Accuracy) testing following a pattern recommended by the Department of State. That has nothing to do with the county.

So where is the county at fault? The biggest error, and this is in hindsight, is the failure to supply voting precincts with sufficient emergency paper ballots to cover a precinct in the unlikely event that use of a voting machine had to be discontinued.  The county only supplied 20 emergency ballots to each precinct under a practice initiated by former Registrar Amy Cozze, who obviously had Dertinger's blessing. Even though this failure was a disaster in the November 7 election, Cozze herself still fails to grasp why.

An anonymous comment from the U.S. Senate, where Cozze just happens to be employed, makes this argument: "Can we just address this paper ballot thing? If the county is going to start sending out hundreds of thousands of paper ballots on election day 'just in case' what the hell is the point of even using the voting machines??? Just switch to an all paper system. The paper ballots are supposed to be for EMERGENCIES not incompetence. ... they need to fire whoever is in charge, not saddle the tax payers with a new outlandish expense. " I'd say that when the machine has to be discontinued, that's an emergency. Also, as Elections Commissioner Dan Lopresti observed, "The cost is tiny compared to what we experienced here."

The remaining errors were by election workers in the field, most of whom only work twice a year.  Some of these are independently elected officials, and the county has limited authority over what they do or fail to do. Some of these officials decided to close their polling stations. This was unsanctioned and inexcusable. Some of them told voters to vote the opposite of who they wanted to elect even though no one in the county gave that advice. Two election workers from Hanover 4 incorrectly told voters that there would be a special election in the appellate retention race, though neither had authority from anyone to give such advice.

Could the county do a better job of training? Registrar Chris Commini told the elections commission last week that there is mandatory training before each election, but it's clear to me that more training is needed, especially before next year's Presidential.

Aside from Dertinger's acquiescence in the limited number of emergency ballots, I find little fault with his administration of this election. His resignation is intended to deflect some criticism away from McClure, who is ultimately responsible.  Instead of doing so, it weakens him in many ways.

It emboldens his critics. As one reader observes, "McClure shows his true colors here. It could be said it was his 'failure' too. In my world the top guy always takes responsibility. That's true leadership." I'd much rather see a written report explaining what went wrong and what steps are being taken to prevent it from happening again.

It is now less likely that his rubber stamps (Zrinski, Lott, Kraft, Warren and Keegan) will remain that way. They have seen now that they are expendable.

It is now far less likely that a McClure pick will get the Council vacancy created when Zrinski becomes Controller. Instead of a McClure lemming like Bill McGee or Greg Zebrowski, Council is far more likely to select someone who would be independent and provide balance. Republican John Cusick or Democrat Deb Hunter are both good choices who would exalt good government over partisanship or blindly following McClure's agenda.

In his time as Executive, McClure has worked hard to undermine the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission, has played a part in the rift between the county conservation district and is now fighting with Easton over a goofy proposed hydropower plant on the Lehigh Canal. Council members Lori Vargo Heffner and Ron Heckman, both of them Democrats, complain his administration refuses to talk to them.

On top of all this, McClure and the local Democratic party are at odds.

How many people can you afford to alienate before you start paying a price?

McClure first tried to downplay the election fiasco as a minor error. Nobody swallowed that bullshit burger. He now has accepted the resignation of his top administrator, hoping that ends things. It's instead an admission.

He has been a good Executive, but his chief flaws have been both an unwillingness to listen as well as a penchant for undermining anyone he perceives to be a threat.

If Republicans can get out of their own way, I doubt very much he wins a third term. Democratic and even Republican voters are motivated by woman's choice, which explains Democratic success on November 7.  But Republican and even Democratic voters care about election integrity. You can't tell people to ignore the touch screen in favor of the paper ballot in one election and to ignore the paper ballot in favor of the touch screen in another.

Charles Dertinger: $92,200 in Union Support And Counting

Back in August, I told you that State Rep. candidate Charles Dertinger is pretty much bought and paid for by the unions. Through June 4, they poured $23,500 into his campaign. But based on his most recent report, I can tell you that's chump change. Over the summer, they've contributed another $68,760. That's well over half of the total he raised this summer. The rest comes from the Democratic Party. Governor Rendell kicked in $10,000 and the trial lawyers' PAC threw in another $10,500, to ensure a vote against tort reform. House leader Dwight Evans gave $5,000 to buy Dertinger's allegiance and obedience. Even Jenn Mann took a break from her consulting work at Vitetta to give Dertinger $500.

Union agents in training Steve "I'm the Controller" Barron and Mike "Call me Doctor" D'Amore, who made idiots out of themselves this Summer when they attempted to unionize a T-Mobile Call Center, kicked in $150 and $100, respectively. I know it's not much, but it's the thought that counts.

The ultimate good government guy, Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski, accidentally sent Dertinger $200. He was supposed to use that for his mancave permit.

Anybody Go to Dertinger-Emrick Debate?

On Tuesday night, State Rep opponents Charles "Don't Call Me Charlie" Dertinger and Joe "Creatine" Emrick squared off at Nazareth High School. I missed it, but if you were there, let us know what happened. Who won? Why? Did any of the candidates fart or burp or do something stupid?

Emrick has sent out negative mailers, attacking Dertinger as a wanton spendthrift who recklessly voted for a tax hike and increased spending during his tenure on County Council. This same charge could also have been hurled at some Republican members of Council. Sure, Dertinger is a bum, but not because he supported one, half mill, open-space tax hike. He's a bum because he had Council's lousiest attendance record, broke his word to slate belt voters, and was needlessly divisive. Amazingly, Emrick ignored legitimate criticism in favor of misleading you.

We have one helluva' choice in that race.

Emrick? Dertinger? Where's a Third Party Candidate When We Need One?

Arrogant. Spiteful. Mean-spirited.

Those are excellent qualifications for anyone interested in a rewarding career as a blogger, but they're not the first things we look for in an elected official. But that's exactly what we have in the race between Charles ("don't call me Charlie") Dertinger and Joe ("Got creatine?") Emrick. It's enough to make me pray for some third party candidate.

Here's the battleground: 137th Legislative District: (Boroughs of Bangor, East Bangor, Nazareth, Portland, Roseto, Stockertown, Tatamy; Townships of Forks, Lower Mount Bethel, Palmer, Upper Mount Bethel, Upper Nazareth, Washington).

Democrat: Charles Dertinger
Webpage located here.

When he was a member of Northampton County Council, he once told me he has no obligation to listen to a word I say because I own no real estate.

But suddenly, he cares about the little guy. On his Facebook page, he lets everyone know that Charles (Yes, he refers to himself in the third person) took a "strong stand on the need to preserve Gracedale Nursing Home, truly one of the jewels of our region, which is located in the center of the 137th district." Of course, this has nothing to do with his state house race or any deep-seated concern for teh elderly. His campaign finance reports this year make very clear that what he's really interested in preserving are those union jobs. You see, those unions are his real constituents, not you. Here's what he's raked in from through June 4 this year:

IBEW LU 5 3/8/2010 $250.00
IBEW LU 325 3/10/2010 $100.00

STEAMFITTERS LU 6/4/2010 $500.00

Incidentally, he's not worried at all about the rising costs of government pensions. He thinks we can just raid our rainy day funds, as he claims here.

If you want to hear how petty and divisive he can get during a council meeting, listen to the clip below. (Note: If you have an old dial up modem, click here, look for the 64Kbps M3U (Lo-Fi) at the left sidebar and you can stream the audio).

He's also lazy. In my annual review of Council attendance, Dertinger ties for last place in 2006, 2008 and 2009. He's third from the bottom in 2007.

Republican: Joe Emrick
Webpage locate here.

Instead of discussing any state government issues, Emrick uses his webpage to brag that he "strongly defeats" his primary opponent, who spent no money. He pretty much continues patting himself on the back at his Facebook page, where he has himself photographed standing next to the Lycoming College Athletic Hall of Fame. He's running for the state house, not to be captain of the football team.

His campaign finance for 2010 reveal practically no PAC money. But he is favored by local aristocrats Elmer "crabbypants" Gates ($500) and L. Anderson Daub ($3,500).

In January, he stormed out of a Republican Committee meeting when things went against him, even lashing out at Peg Ferraro.

He also thinks that submitting to an interview with a blogger is beneath him. But then again, so does Dertinger. Come to think of it, they're probably right.

In his favor, Emrick has cut taxes in Upper Nazareth Tp twice, and did get a webpage going in Upper Nazareth Township.

Dertinger Loses Dem State Committee Bid

In addition to running for State Rep., Charles "Don't Call me Charlie" Dertinger ran for the Democratic State Committee. According to the unofficial tally, he lost that county-wide race, coming in behind Ladd Siftar, Joe "Bossman" Long and Mike "I don't give a" Fleck Bob Freeman.

Dertinger Better Fire His Pollster

Charles "Don't call me Charlie" Dertinger was bragging that his private poll showed him a 10-point winner. With all precincts in, he's ahead by a scant 6 votes out of 3,838 ballots cast in his state house race against popular Frank Scagliotta.

ET Sportswriter Blouse Can't Endorse Scagliotta

Express Times Managing Editor Jim Deegan has tried to muzzle sportswriter Michael Blouse from endorsing Frank Scagliotta in his state house race against Charles "don't call me Charlie" Dertinger. Deegan is obviously acting under orders from the Big Cheese himself, Joe Owens.

Owens, who started life as a sportswriter, and in Philly of all God-awful places, should have known better than to mess with Blouse, who deftly handles the situation like this:

"I'm not allowed to endorse political candidates for Tuesday's primary election, so says svelte slimmed-down Managing Editor Jim Deegan. So, folks, I will NOT blog today about the honorable Frank J. Scagliotta's run (the "J" stands for "J"ustice) for state representative of the 137th District. The superb Scagliotta, the HofF football coach at BAHS and formerly regarded as one of the nation's elite college basketball officials, is destined to defeat overmatched opponent Charles "Chuck" Dertinger, a professional political [?] who is a porous one-for-five at the polls. (Guess I ain't allowed to wish Frank "good luck" either?) Check out this outstanding Q&A between the fabulous Frank J. Scagliotta and blogger extraordinare Bernie O'Hare. I love politics."

Goal! Ggoal! Ggggggoooooaaaaalllllllllll!

Coach Scagliotta now has a campaign web page.

Following the Money in the 137th

Yesterday, I told you about the campaign warchests of Charles Dertinger and Frank Scagliotta, the two Democrats seeking the seat held by retiring state rep. Rich Grucela. Dertinger raised $15,965 to Scagliotta's $3103. Nearly all of Dertinger's money comes from nonlocal unions.

What about the Republicans?

Don Albanese has raised a grand total of $2,175. Joe Emrick's warchest was four times larger. He raised $5,577 in addition to the $3,395.33 that was already in his kitty.

Neither Republican received any PAC money. They relied on mostly small, $100, contributions from family and friends. Republican Kingmakers L. Anderson Daub and Elmer Gates did kick in $1,800 to Emrick.

Both candidates bought two small ads and paid for a small mailer.

Dertinger raised more money than the other three candidates combined. Dertinger is the only candidate who accepted such huge sums of special interest money, raising questions about his independence.

All of these reports are available on the Department of State web page.

Dertinger Will Represent Unions, Not You

Charles Dertinger is seeking the Democratic nod for the state house seat currently held by State Rep. Rich Grucela. His campaign finance report makes one thing very clear- he'll definitely be looking for that union label. He's running to represent them, not you.

An alphabet soup of unions is funding his campaign.

IBEW has kicked in the lion's share with a whopping $8,650. Other unions, from AFL-CIO to the Steamfitters, have kicked in another $6,000. Nearly all of the $15,965 he raised comes directly from non-local unions.

In sharp contrast, Dertinger's Democratic opponent, Frank Scagliotta, has raised $3,103.25, mostly in the form of small contributions from friends and family.

Grucela's Successor? Meet State Rep Candidate Don Albanese

Slate Belt resident Don Alabanese, a Republican, is running for the Pennsylvania state house seat being vacated by Rich Grucela. Alabanese is a Slate belt native who actually spent some years in the New Jersey Assembly. Rich tells me Don coached his kids in Little League baseball. When Don decided to run, Rich invited him to Harrisburg and gave him a tour.

Don has no web page, but his introductory video is located here. He proposes (1) a Constitutional amendment to limit state legislators to 8 years; (2) zero-based budgeting, "where each expenditure has to be justified"; and (3) an end to unfunded mandates, where the state imposes obligations on local government, but fails to provide the funding.

I will be interviewing Don in the next few days. I hope I can get you a picture Don's Republican opponent in the Primary, Joe Emrick, has unsurprisingly declined my request for an interview. Too bad. I have lots of questions for him.

Democrat Frank Scagliotta, a Bangor football coach, has also agreed to sit down with me. His Democratic opponent, Charles Dertinger, will do no such thing. He's ingored my request for an interview, but that's OK. I have lots of videos and audios.

Grucela Refuses to Anoint His Successor in 137th

State Rep. Rich Grucela has decided to take a break from public life at the end of this year. He's been at it since 1974, serving as a Lower Mount Bethel Township supervisor and chairman, as a Northampton County Council member and President and, most recently, as a member of the state house.

Over the last four years, he's been the subject of 83 posts on this blog. When I guest-hosted Ron Angle's talk radio show on WGPA 1100 AM, he was a regular guest. Rich voted against the midnight legislative payraise, refused to take it, and was rewarded for his troubles by losing his role on several key committees. That may have lost him the confidence of the House leadership in Harrisburg, but he won the hearts of the Lehigh Valley. He was unopposed in 2006 and 2008, when many others had stiff competition.

In 2007, he was rated by readers of this blog as one of the LV's top ten elected leaders. He's a real Democrat. For one thing, he opposes party endorsements in contested primaries. As my state rep., he never refused to duck a call or answer an email. I'll miss him.

Rich's 137th legislative district includes Forks, Lower Mount Bethel, Palmer, Upper Mount Bethel, Upper Nazareth, Washington, Bangor, East Bangor, Nazareth, Portland, Roseto, Stockertown and Tatamy. Unlike most seats, this one could go either Republican or Democrat.

Four candidates - Democrats Frank Scagliotta and Charles Dertinger, and Republicans Donald Albanese and Joe Emrick - are after Rich's seat. Ironically, most of the attacks so far have been inexplicably directed at the person who is stepping down, Rich Grucela.

Grucela has been attacked, anonymously, for his supposed ties to and endorsement of Frank Scagliotta, who is lovingly referred to elsewhere as "Skank." Grucela was apparently spotted in a Scagliotta classroom. "They sat in the back of the room with their heads together."

Today I received an email from Rich that is "for the record." He told me he received calls from 5 of 6 potential candidates for his job and spoke to them all. In fact, Republican Donald Albanese "and his wife came to Harrisburg and visited my office …… I had them introduced from the house gallery and told them where the Republican caucus met … I also introduced him to some very good R friends of mine who got a big kick out of it ….. They said they always knew I was 'nuts'……Don’s son coached our son in little league baseball."

Rich has also tried to be helpful to both Dertinger and Scagliotta. "I have given both Frank and Charles advice and told them events they should attend ….. I also have given them names of people who I believe would support their views."

Did he meet with Scagliotta at Bangor High School? Yes. "For the record I did visit BAHS and Frank’s class …. He called me with a question about how to fill out his ethics form b/c of his referee’s income …. It was a bad weather day…. The students came to school but b/c of the weather (a late storm brewing that day) there was to be an early dismissal…. Frank’s class had very low attendance and he chose to show a video already in progress when I arrived."

Who has Rich endorsed? "I have only endorsed Jack Wagner for Governor and no other candidates."

Grucela has avoided endorsing anyone and has tried to be helpful to everyone. He realizes the voters make this call, not him.

Dumb & Dumber: NorCo Dems Endorse Dertinger, But Not Callahan

In one of my favorite movies, Dumb & Dumber, Lloyd trades Harry's van in for a moped. They're in the middle of a road trip across the country, and still have to go up the Rockies and into Denver. In the Winter. When Harry finds out what has happened, he has this reaction. "Just when I thought you couldn't possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this ... and totally redeem yourself!" Well, move over, Harry & Lloyd. After reading Rich Wilkins' report concerning the most recent back room dealings of Northampton County Dems, I can only conclude that they're auditioning for the lead in Dumb & Dumber III. Let me tell you the story.

In his eight long years at the helm of the local Dems, Joe "Bossman" Long has alienated Lehigh County Executive Don Cunningham, Northampton County Executive John Stoffa and state party boss T. J. Rooney. His penchant for preselection of candidates in smoke-filled bars has resulted in disaster after disaster at the polls. These include Charles Dertinger (Congress); Sam Bennett (Congress); Glenn Reibman (County Exec); and Ann McHale (County Exec). Our fearless leader's most recent trick was to manage somehow to lose all five at-large seats in November's County Council race, giving Republicans a first-ever 7-2 edge. Even Northampton County's bench is now Republican. As if that were not enough, Long has made at least three appearances before a statewide grand jury investigating deceptive campaign practices.

So on Saturday, when Northampton County Dems met in a smoke-filled Nazareth bar again, it should come as no surprise that only 24 committee people bothered showing up. Of course, it's likely that only a few were even notified. County Exec John Stoffa, who happens to be the highest ranking Democrat in Northampton County, was snubbed. I live just a block away, and considered crashing the party myself. But these local apparatchiks have a history of ejecting contrarians, even their own committeemen. I stayed away.

Obviously, it was mostly a gaggle of Joe Long sycophants, not Democrats. But even among this crowd, a dim light had gone off. Maybe they should think twice about telling the rest of us how we're supposed to vote. So Ladd Siftar, a former County Council member who sits on the state committee, moved that the local party should refuse to endorse anyone, even in the uncontested primaries. It passed, 13 to 11.

Huh?

That's right, bippy. Congressional candidate John Callahan, derisively referred to as the "boy Mayor" by state house candidate Charles Dertinger just a few months ago, made the trip up Nazareth Pike for nothing. He got piked after giving a speech to a few barflies. Does this mean that Dems support Charlie Dent?

The same thing happened to State Rep. Bob Freeman. He came up from Easton, gave a speech that went on even longer than Callahan's, has no primary opponent, and left Nazareth with nothing. Does this mean Dems support wingnut Ron Shegda?

It gets better. After refusing to endorse anyone, even candidates with no primary opponents, Bill Wallace made a pitch for the local party to endorse Charles Dertinger in the only local primary that actually is contested. That motion passed nearly unanimously.

Huh?

That's right, bippy. Frank Scagliotta, a popular slate belt coach and NCAA basketball official making his political debut, has been rejected in favor of a divisive candidate who is batting just one out of five at the polls.

I spoke to a wise Democratic veteran today, who laughed and told me, "Bernie, we don't make Democrats take intelligence tests."

And this is the proof. Fortunately, Long's machine has shot itself so many times that it has pretty much made itself irrelevant.

Grucela Seat Update

Popular State Rep. Rich Grucela has decided, after ten years, that he's had enough of the land of midnight payraises. He'll be stepping down at the end of the year. His 137th legislative district includes Forks, Lower Mount Bethel, Palmer, Upper Mount Bethel, Upper Nazareth, Washington, Bangor, East Bangor, Nazareth, Portland, Roseto, Stockertown and Tatamy. Unlike most seats, this one could go either Republican or Democrat.

Of the four candidates I know about, Democrat Frank Scagliotta and Republican Donald Albanese seem to be the class acts. Democrat Charles (Don't call me Charlie!) Dertinger and Republican Joe (I hate Peg Ferraro) Emrick? Not so much.

I learned Friday night that Albanese, a former Jersey assemblyman, has enough signatures to get on the Republican ballot. He's originally a slater who defected to the garden state, only later to return to his roots. Emrick, who recently stormed out of a local Republican committee meeting for refusing to go along with his hand-picked nominee for another state house seat, made sure to insult Peg Ferraro a few times on his way out. He thinks his own nomination is in the bag, but I'm told committee members are turned off by his arrogance and pushy style.

Scagliotta, a Bangor High School football coach and NCAA basketball referee, has been teaching for 34 years, and was finally persuaded to get involved, some say by Rich Grucela himself. Of course, Charles Dertinger is already smearing Scags in a whisper campaign for recently switching parties. Just as arrogant and pushy as Emrick, Dertinger recently suffered a humiliating loss in his bid for re-election to Northampton County Council.

This is my district. People here prefer the nonpartisan approach. That's why hardliners like Dertinger and Emrick will have a short shelf life.

Grucela's Seat: Who Will We Send to Harrisburg?

For the past eight years, popular State Rep. Rich Grucela has faithfully served the people of Nazareth and much of the slate belt, who elected him as their voice in Harrisburg. Unfortunately, he's stepping down.

Within hours of that decision, two Democrats and two Republicans have surfaced and are circling.

Republican Joe Emrick, Chairman of Upper Nazareth's Supervisors, is definitely in the race. He will formally kick off on February 4th, at a time and place yet to be determined. Lehigh County Comm'r Glenn Eckhart served with Emrick for two years as a Salisbury Township Commissioner. "Joe was one of the two members on the board that help me push though Salisbury Township's first property tax cut in 2003."

According to The Express Times, New Jersey transplant Donald Albanese is interested as well. This Republican previously served in New Jersey's state assembly about 25 years ago, where he was apparently an avid Ronald Reagan fan.

Democrats Charles Dertinger and Joe Capozzolo, both former members of Northampton County Council, are also eyeing this seat. Capozzolo's terms on Northampton County Council and as Bangor Mayor, recently expired. Dertinger lost a re-election effort in November, even losing in his home town.

Grucela Decides Against Seeking ReElection

Capitol Ideas reports that Rich Grucela, my own state representative, has decided against seeking re-election to the state house. This opens the door to recently defeated Northampton County Council member Charles Dertinger.

Thursday, November 05, 2009

Charles Dertinger, RIP?

With Tuesday's defeat of incumbent Council member Charles Dertinger, is it safe to conclude his political career is over? He has now lost four races in ten years. He's also part of a cabal making regular appearances before a grand jury investigating deceptive campaign practices. Maybe he should consider law school. Here's his political history.

In 1999

Charles Dertinger runs against Ron Angle for the District 4 County Council seat. Dertinger, a union operative, tries to portray himself as a pig farmer. It turns out that Dertinger has slaughtered and eaten the sole pig at his family compound. During this campaign, Angle is savaged by attack ads emblazoned with swastikas. Dertinger denies any involvement. Angle wins.

In 2003

Ron Angle again beats Charles Dertinger for the District 4 County Seat. (6,637 to 5,301). No swastikas or pigs this time.

In 2005

Dertinger runs for a county-wide Council seat, garnering the second highest vote count behind the infamous Wayne Grube. It's a good year to be a Democrat. John Stoffa beats incumbent Glenn Reibman. Change is in the air and it is thick in Northampton County. Charles says "Good Day!" a lot.

Wayne Grube gets 22,988 Votes
Dertinger gets 17,829 Votes

In 2006

Recruited by Dem Party Boss Joe Long, Dertinger wages a congressional campaign against LV Congressman Charlie Dent. He complains during a debate that he was "more or less dragged" into the race. That comment is recorded and becomes the basis of a radio campaign against him. Although Democrats seize control of Congress with a net gain of at least twenty-nine seats, Dertinger loses his home township and even his own precinct. Dent achieves a nearly 20,000 vote margin of victory.

In 2007

Dertinger, exhausted after a failed Congressional campaign, still has two years left to serve on Council. He decides to meddle in the campaigns of other council candidates. He becomes part of an unholy alliance headed by Joe "Bossman" Long and Tom “Scissorhands” Severson. The result is some of the slimiest tactics ever seen in a county where the mud regularly flows thick and deep. This evil consortium also results in a grand jury, and a bunch of misdemeanor and felony charges.

In this climate, Peg Ferraro runs for a two-year County Council at Large seat.

Peg gets 18,354 to Tony Branco's 15,113

In 2009

Taking his next Council victory for granted, Dertinger instead focuses his campaign on State Rep. Rich Grucela's District, laying the groundwork for an eventual run there.

Peg Ferraro gets (unofficially) 19,004 votes to Dertinger's 13,046.

During a debate in October, Peg Ferraro compliments the very Slate Belt residents who worked actively against her in 1997, telling them that is democracy in action. Dertinger has to explain why he broke a pledge made to Wind Gap voters and refuses to explain his grand jury appearances.

Peg has TWICE received MORE votes than Charlie Dertinger's highest vote count.

Dertinger Should Have Been Nicer to the Christmas City

Back in June, Northampton County Council member Charles Dertinger dropped in on a meeting of Bethlehem Democrats to crack the whip. They were growing upset about county endorsements and state mailings made on behalf of some, but not all, candidates. Instead of playing peacemaker, Dertinger alienated everyone, including Bethlehem City Council members Karen Dolan and Willie Reynolds.

Dertinger slammed Dolan for airing her views publicly, especially because she did so on this very blog. He'd prefer that she confine herself to backroom politics like a good little Long Dem. As described by a person who watched in horror, Charles' position was essentially this: "Screw you guys, we're not going to address any of your concerns, we're going to declare you wrong, and you're going to leave here unhappy, AND still, you will be loyal and follow us."

Maybe he should have been a little nicer.

Bethlehem Dems had little reason to vote on Tuesday. There were no contested races, and Dertinger's dismissive attitude sure made it unlikely they would organize a GOTV effort just for him. Voting records show that Bethlehem's total turnout was just 14.99%. In Precinct 3, it was an appalling 4.48%. This had to hurt Democrats.

Is Dertinger Running For For Norco Council or Grucela's Seat?

If you think Charles Dertinger is running for re-election to Northampton County Council, think again. His sights are set on Harrisburg, land of midnight payraises. Twenty-four hour finance reports, filed late last week, reveal he's given the Pa. Demcratic Party $6,000 for a mailer. It's insufficient to fund a county-wide mailer, but good enough to target voters in a specific geographic area. Charles has also spent $3,334.79 on robo calls.

Believe it or not, I've received Dertinger's factually challenged mailer. Two of his robo calls have wasted minutes on my cell phone, too. Dertinger has told several people, who shall remain nameless, that his campaign is focused on State Rep. Rich Grucela's district. He apparently views himself as Grucela's heir apparent.

Is Dertinger relying on the same rocket scientists who engineered Ann McHale's disaster in Northampton County? I certainly hope so.

Ten Reasons Why You Should Dump Dertinger

Yesterday, The Express Times' editorial board endorsed five of the ten candidates seeking a seat on Northampton County Council, recommending three Republicans - Peg Ferraro, John Cusick and Tom Dietrich, as well as Democrats Deb Hunter and Bill Wallace. Far more interesting than the actual endorsement was their decision to pan incumbent Charles Dertinger.

"Incumbent Charles Dertinger ... has given voters all the evidence they need to end his council career. He's been a divisive force on council, thwarting Stoffa's plans to expand the county juvenile center and build an inmate center without suggesting credible alternatives. The council needs more consensus-building and less obstructionism."

Whether you are Democrat or Republican, you'd be nUtZ to vote for this guy. A vote for Charles Dertinger is a vote for bad government. Let me give you ten reasons why Dertinger is bad for Northampton County.

1. He refuses to level with the voters about his dates with a statewide grand jury. - Dertinger has been hauled before a statewide grand jury ... twice ... to answer questions about deceptive campaign practices in Northampton County. When I asked him about it, during a debate before a slate belt audience, he responded by attacking me. Shouldn't he come clean with the voters?

2. He's a liar. - Four years ago, County Council candidate Charles Dertinger solemnly pledged he would vote to kill the funding for a $3 million road benefiting an industrial development owned by famous campaign contributor Nolan Perin. Perin wanted a Wal-Mart. Once elected, Dertinger went back on his word, repeatedly voting against killing the project. In the meantime the county wasted $440,000 in engineering studies.

Asked about his broken promise during a debate, he lied again, claiming he supported the road only because Wal-Mart was no longer part of the picture. Here's how he put it, in his exact words. "I voted not to withdraw the money for the industrial drive after the Wal-Mart was out. You know that, and you're trying to conflate something otherwise."

County council minutes tell a different tale. On June 15, 2006, when Wal-Mart was very much under consideration, Dertinger voted to support the road. On February 15, 2007, after Wal-Mart had already given hope, Dertinger still voted for the road.

3) He has been a divisive force on Council. = Northampton County Council is the laughing stock of local legislatures, largely because of him. Want some examples?

* In 2006, he launched an obscenity laced tirade as Ron Angle tried to leave council chambers. He cornered the more diminutive Angle, pointing fingers in his face, getting closer, louder and redder. I had to insert myself between the two of them.

* In 2007, he tried to have Angle barred from voting on a matter in his own district, which prompted the late Wayne Grube to accuse Dertinger of having an "agenda." "This is nothng more than vindictive stuff."

* In 2008. while numerous nominees to various boards were forced to stand in front of Council like schoolchildren, Dertinger directed a lengthy hissy fit at County Exec John Stoffa, insisting on calling him "Stoff-er" after being corrected.

* In 2008, blasted Stoffa administration for its cautious approach to expensive capital projects. "We have an administration that can't build a birdhouse."

* In 2008, he engineered a votes expelling Exec John Stoff-er from the Higher Education Authority. Stoff-er smiled at me and said, "Crushing defeat."

* If you want to hear how petty and divisive he can get during a council meeting, listen to the clip below. (Note: If you have an old dial up modem, click here, look for the 64Kbps M3U (Lo-Fi) at the left sidebar and you can stream the audio).

4) He's lazy. - In my annual review of Council attendance, Dertinger ties for last place in 2006, is third from the bottom in 2007 and is tied for last place in 2008.

5) He's a one-man tax increase. - His broken promises concerning the Wind Gap road to nowhere cost the County $440,000. Because it's borrowed money, his lie will actually l cost you twice that amount. But that's only part of a pattern over the last three years.

* He tried to shove an IT contract down the County's throat that was $1.8 million more than the one Stoff-er eventually negotiated. He even refused to accept Solicitor Zito's advice to resolve the matter because it might "set a precedent."

* He supported wasting $650 thousand for renovations to Council's star chamber, which includes his very own laptop, but completely failed to include a nickel to videotape or webcast council meetings.

* He called the County's $70 million and growing pension deficit, the main reason for the tax increase, a mere "paper problem."

6) Ruins Morale Among County Workers. -

* He voted to demand the resignation of the county's personnel director, without even giving her an opportunity to be heard, to placate a green T-shirted lynch mob of county union workers, his real constituents.

* Called the county's relatively flawless presidential election a "screw up of epic proportions," resulting in the resignation of the Voting Registrar.

7) Too Union Friendly. - Believes county should just cave in on union grievances because fighting them is too costly.

8) Too Partisan. - He routinely votes against cabinet level officials who belong to the "wrong" party, ignoring the bipartisan approach to government suggested by President Barack Obama. He helped eject a Democratic council candidate from a party meeting for complaining about primary endorsements.

9) Opposes Transparency. - He's claimed he does he best work "outside of committee hearings," behind closed doors. He opposes campaign finance reform because some "little citizen group" might actually get together and challenge his reports. Despite the clear language of the Home Rule Charter, which he calls "yellow cake uranium," he believes citizens who own no real estate have no right to be heard.

10) Opposes Open Space. - Despite his claims to the contrary, Dertinger actually voted against John Stoff-er's "pay as you go" open space program.

John Cusick Keeps Word, Dertinger Does Not

Part of Northampton County's myopic 2001 $111 million megabond included a $3 million grant for the development of a road benefiting an industrial development owned by famous campaign contributor Nolan Perin. When word leaked out that Perin actually intended the site for a Wal-Mart, Slate Belt residents erupted.

Four years ago, Northampton County council candidates John Cusick, Charles Dertinger and Lamont McClure were among those who pledged they would vote to kill the funding for that road. But once elected, only Cusick kept his word. They repeatedly voted against killing the project. In the meantime the county wasted $440,000 in engineering studies, money down the drain.

Finally, after Wal-Mart itself pulled out of the slate belt, County Council killed the project. Council Prez Wayne Grube summed things up nicely, as only he could.

"This was a mistake. We've had it with that project. We've heard it four or five times. Let's go do what has to be done to try and recoup our money. I've had it. I openly admit that I made a mistake, and that'll be on our boy's blog tomorrow."

Wayne made a mistake, but was man enough to admit it. John Cusick kept his word throughout this ordeal, and reminded slate belt voters of that last week.

"One of the things I want to do is remind you that four years ago, at a forum down the road at the Plainfield Fire Company, you all had an issue. You asked us how we felt about Wal-Mart coming in and would we support paying for a road. I told you that I would vote to pull that money and I'm proud that every time the vote came up, I stood up and did exactly what I told you I would do four years ago."

Amazingly, or perhaps not so amazingly, Charles Dertinger was untruthful in response to a direct question from Ron Angle. "I voted not to withdraw the money for the industrial drive after the Wal-Mart was out. You know that, and you're trying to conflate something otherwise."

The truth is that Charles Dertinger has steadfastly voted against withdrawing the money for the industrial drive, regardless whether Wal-Mart was part of the picture. On June 15, 2006, when Wal-Mart was very much under consideration, Dertinger voted against defunding the road. On February 15, 2007, after Wal-Mart had already given hope, Dertinger still voted against defunding the road.

Currying favor with campaign contributor Nolan Perin was apparently more important than keeping his word. Dertinger's failure to keep his word cost taxpayers $440 thousand. What's worse, he couldn't even be honest about breaking his word.
