I voted for Mehmet Oz, not John Fetterman, in last year's race for the US Senate. I voted by mail, before the fateful debate in which Fetterman stumbled badly. But it was after I watched an interview with NBC. His cognitive ability and his extreme views bothered me. Not his attire. I frankly don't pay much attention to what's on the outside. It's what's inside that matters. Several of you are embracing this dress code as just another way to bash Fetterman. But I can tell you about two previous Pa politicians who preferred ordinary clothing to the required uniform of elitists.
It's hard to drive through any county without stumbling across at least one school named after the 15th President of the United States. That's James Buchanan, a Franklin County native. He preferred the simple clothing worn in his agrarian community, and rejected what he called a "peacock parade" in which the United States had started to adorn its foreign ministers with military coats adorned with gold lace, a chapeau and a small sword. They called it the "livery of the American people." He called it "ridiculous."
When he himself was sent to the court of St. James, he refused to deck himself out with all the frills that elitists were wearing at the time. He offended many English bastard by dressing in the "simple, unpretending garb of the American citizen."
I'll bet he even though those little American flag pins that everyone inside the Beltway wants to show off these days was never once worn by Buchanan.
In addition to James Buchanan, we can look to one of our founding fathers who lived most of his life in Pennsylvania. Instead of decking himself in a powdered wig and frilly jacket, Benjamin Franklin preferred a simple dark purple jacket with a fur hat. His goal was to show American self-sufficiency and it actually caught on.
So when you mock Fetterman's simple attire, you should know he is just following the lead of fellow Pennsylvanians James Buchanan and Ben Franklin.

We sat through four years of our former President insulting, mocking, and disrespecting our laws and norms on a daily basis. So now we are bothered because a somebody is wearing shorts?
Nonsense, of course. It's not simple attire. It's bed clothes. There's a difference. He needn't wear Brooks Brothers. He shouldn't wear filthy bed clothes. That disrespectful of simply attired American citizens who eschew bedclothes as regular attire.
And if he was allowed to continue with shorts and hoodies, what would you say the next time you went to a local government facility and found half the staff still in pj"s and wearing slippers? Maybe he's not smart enough to button a shirt or close a belt.
I wonder if Buchanan’s simple dress contributed to his rating as one of our worst presidents.
So now Fetterman is the equivalent of James Buchanan or Ben Franklin? Gimme a break!
I don’t criticize Fetterman for the clothes he wears when not acting in an official capacity, I criticize him because he’s an spoiled trust-fund elitist who thinks the rules need to be changed for whatever he wants to do. He is the poster boy of entitlement.
His wearing of his hoodie is all about promoting a phony image of himself, not to actually honor anyone he supposedly represents.
Fetterman has accomplished nothing, and expecting him to adhere to the existing rules and wear a modern suit (lightweight and breathable) - IN HIS FIRST YEAR ON THE JOB - is hardly a burden.
I realize that as a democrat you have a tough time holding one of your elected officials to ANY standard, but cut us a break. We’ve wasted enough time on our do-nothing Senator Fetterbum already!
I can't believe you can write comedy everyday? You should be on a late night talk show. They aren't funny either but its a perfect match.
I can’t believe someone would admit out loud that they voted for Oz.
Most businesses have a dress code & you make the decision before you take the job to comply or move on to another job. Fetterman knew the protocol when he ran & elected to defying this speaks to his poor character IMO.
Fetterman doesn’t dress in simple attire. Fetterman is intentionally slovenly. He has created this blue collar persona without having any claim to blue collar roots or experience. His hypocrisy was exposed during his campaign, but was carried into office largely by the Philadelphia vote, arguably the most ignorant voting block in the country.
Simple attire would constitute a decent pair of jeans and a golf shirt. Simple attire would constitute a pair of khaki pants and a collared shirt. Hell, simple attire would constitute a matching athletic outfit.
The guys an intentional slob. Stop defending him.
If Joey B, our first gay president, albeit closeted, rejected the peacock parade of wearing gold lace, chapeaus, wigs and frilly jackets, today's uber butch politicians should focus more on legislating and less on fashion.
Ben Franklin's PJ's were more formal than whatever the hell Fetterman wears. How much water can you carry for these losers?
We continue to avoid, ‘talk around,’ serious issues threatening to bring down our American democratic republic. Is it fear of truth in admitting ongoing efforts from within to overthrow our government? Pure ignorance due to complicit news media censorship? Probably both and more.
I know this, however, how John Fetterman chooses to present himself in the clothing he wears is of no concern to me. It’s a silly diversion from dangers of greater significance to my future well-being. This is modern day bread and circuses.
So where does it end? Bikini’s? No clothes at all? Business attire should be required in the senate, this isn’t the 1800s. Have some damn respect for your constituents. If it’s not required, then anyone entering the chamber should be allowed to wear whatever the hell they want. You can’t have it both ways.
I say Bullshit. He's just an asshole and shouldn't even be there.
Loser? That's SEN. Fetterman to youse guys.
Fatterman is a disgrace.
An embarrassment to Pennsyvanians. It was the ignorant Philadelphia voting bloc that got this fool elected .
You must have missed the memo: "John Fetterman" is a BODY DOUBLE! Yep, it's true... him and Damar Hamlin. The government makes body doubles as a way to DISTRACT you from what is really going on!!!
contributors to this blog find it difficult to believe that anyone could vote for Fetterman. No, they would rather vote for someone who was endorsed by a walking rectum and indicted 92 time for crimes like insurrection, rape, fraud, .......Go for it you poor excuses for human beings.
But, I want my government officials to wear suits to accomplish nothing. After all, accomplishing nothing should look...official.
How about the dress code NOT allow AR-15 pins? I find that more appalling than Fetterman's casual attire.
I have to say that I am quite surprised by the hypocrisy of the MAGAs. They are the ones who bray that mask mandates interfere with their freedom and desire to do what they want. But they are more than willing to embrace a dress code requiring a "peacock parade" both at the Senate and its gallery. This should be individual choice bc we are Americans. Why am I bringing it up? Because Congress dithers with this nonsense at the very time it is allowing the government to shut down.
Masks required = Tyranny!
Full monkey suit = YES! MANDATORY!
"So now Fetterman is the equivalent of James Buchanan or Ben Franklin? Gimme a break!"
Of course not but I find it interesting that three advocates of simple and ordinary attire are all from Pa.
A government shutdown isn’t the big crisis as portrayed by our news media. Besides, if it happens, the whole thing will be over in a week. You see, our weak, almost useless, Republican Party will capitulate without going any benefit. They always do.
You see, in today’s America, both parties work only for re-election and personal fundraising. Most Republicans are fully content with finishing in Second Place. Just more posturing to placate voters. One big UniParty. They’ll all be just fine.
Our government people are assholes.
Youse guys!!!! You sound like a rocket scientist,
Never underestimate the stupidity of the American voters
Wasn't Ben Franklin a drunk and sex addict that had group orgies?
You bray on that Trump is a disrespectful person. Now you get upset about a reminder for decorum? Which side of your mouth are you talking out of?
I for one am glad they are calling for a dress code. Otherwise, no telling where this would have ended up.

What really upsets me is that Congress can pass anything they want, as fast as they want or not want to. For the past 4 years, they have enough support to make the time standard in the USA. We wouldn't have to change the clocks twice a year. Constituents have been begging for this. Personally I don't care if we use fall or spring hours. Let the Congress pass at least one thing that the people have been asking for more than 4 years. We the People. Let them not forget it.
I doubt his commitment to dressing like an unemployed man who sits in his basement all day on his PlayStation and blaming the system for his lack of success is homage to Buchanan and Franklin.
But, this is an interesting observation. Buchanan, a lawyer and politician, and Franklin, a statesman, inventor, and polymath; both dressed in a humble manner reflecting their commitment to hard work. Fetterman, a sloth who lived on his in-law's couch for a while and was derelict in his duties as Lt. Governor (per a mcall.com article - "The review found that Fetterman’s daily schedule was blank during roughly one-third of workdays from January 2019, when he first took office, to May of this year..." (2022)) sports attire that is indeed reflective of the apathetic loser he is.
Are lawful owners of AR15’s appalling?
Fetterman is probably the most unaccomplished Senator in US history. So maybe for him, he is properly attired.
This may be your mother lode of falls equivalencies.
Fettermans dedication to being a slob is not a MAGA issue, and entirely owned by him.
But way to use bait.
Bernie is against was is perhaps the most bipartisan agreement in recent senate history. An overwhelming majority of the senate supported rescinding Schumer’s ill conceived order that was meant to cater to one person in a body of 100, including his second in command Dick Durban. The senate isn’t a circus or a gym. Period.
Jefferson also was somewhat known for dressing casually.
Shutting THIS government down might not be such a bad idea. We are not being properly served. In fact, our futures are being damaged. We are being invaded by millions since 2021 with people we know nothing about. Our cities are experiencing lawlessness and our tax dollars squandered away. Our military has been weakened, our investments tanking through inflation, etc.
How can anyone want to continue on this way?
Fetterman should have known the dress code that was expected of him before he ran for the Senate. When someone votes or supports a candidate simply because he dresses in a hoodie and shorts, it makes you wonder about the intellect of those people.
That was JFK
No. We wanted the medical doctor. You chose Magilla.
Buchanan's boyfriend dressed him.
James Buchanan have more than clothing in common — they both made/make PA voters look like a bunch of ninnies. James was one of the worst presidents and that oaf Fetterman is a hot mess.
Depends
Where did he get to?
That's a new one . Chevy Chase said Cary Grant was gay and it cost him 675 thousand dollars
Agree the idiots voted for trump
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.scientificamerican.com/article/dr-oz-shouldnt-be-a-senator-or-a-doctor/%3famp=true
Mengele was a doctor too
Dress code…how about makeup code..a former disgraceful president wearing bronzer and dye in his hair, and topping it all off with hair spray and eye shadow….and making sure his face paint doesn’t rub off on his mask during horrible Covid event……or his lawyer Rudy who’s hair dye was running down his face. Wow, and we worry about dress code? Maybe we should focus a bit more on Democracy and how we got there.
Based on his 9 months tenure.
Trump is only person who can save this country--that is a fact-too mant stupid people vote for democrats--republicans are not much better we need Trump more than ever.
A comment by the epitome of a Trump supporter.
Go finish your painting on the cave wall
Best comment ever.
"too 'mant' stupid people," eh?
While I prefer casual clothing, I'm not the guy showing up to church or a wedding in jean shorts and a tee shirt. Have some decency and act like you were not raised by a pack of wolves.
