Biden and Harris Should Sit Out the Next Election

Things look very bad for Democrats in the upcoming midterms. According to 538, Republicans now have a 53% chance of gaining control of the Senate and a 85% chance of taking over the House. Here in Pa., the Senate race between Mehmet Oz and John Fetterman is listed as a "toss-up." The same is true of the US House election pitting Lisa Scheller against Susan Wild.  Democrats, who should have been mindful of the usual midterm backlash, instead overreached.

Josh Barro sums thing up rather nicely:

First of all, they have been insufficiently attentive to economic factors they now acknowledge are likely to drive this and future elections. Joe Biden knew that world events beyond his control could spike gasoline prices, yet his fear that voters might punish him for this did not give him pause when he pursued an agenda from day one that discouraged North American production of oil and gas, including pausing drilling leases and canceling the Keystone XL pipeline. He was blasé about the risk that the American Rescue Plan would overstimulate the economy and spur inflation, ignoring the warnings of mainstream Democratic economists like Larry Summers. He spent much of 2021 trying to get Congress to approve a multi-trillion dollar package of new social spending that would have been even more inflationary. He approved an extra-legal cancellation of hundreds of billions of dollars of student loan debt in a manner never contemplated by Congress (so much for democracy!). His party has coalesced around increasingly rigidly progressive positions and rhetoric on issues including abortion, sex and gender, and immigration, and Biden himself moved in a more extreme direction on abortion by rejecting the Hyde Amendment, which he had long supported — hardly an effort to broaden the coalition."

Instead of attacking Joe Manchin, Democrats would have done better to heed his warnings. Instead of being champions of the working poor and blue collars, we've become elitists who've become the standard bearers of wokeness. Biden had to choose a black woman as his VP, even though making those two attributes a requirement is  itself both racist and sexist.

Now, in the wake of the Paul Pelosi assault at the hands of mentally unbalanced right-winger who was also a left-winger at times (he's frickin' cRaZy), President Joe Biden piously asserts that the midterms are a referendum on democracy itself.  No, they are a referendum on him and his failed presidency. A vote against Biden or a Democrat is not a vote against democracy. It's a vote against him. Biden's attempt to spin this any other way is itself anti-Democratic.

While I agree that political violence has increased and must be taken seriously, Biden politicizes the matter by speaking about it on the eve of an election that his party is losing.

That's why, as George Will has pleaded in The Washington Post, both Biden and VP Kamala Hrris need to step aside in the next Presidential. Will notes that Biden is "past his prime," and to be honest, that's being charitable. His gaffes used to be amusing. Now they are disconcerting. The President of the United States must be an effective communicator. Biden is simply the worst in my lifetime. It's little wonder he'd endorse John Fetterman, another ineffective messenger.

VP  Kamala Harris, according to Will, "sounds like someone giving a book report on a book she has not read."  Just a few days ago, in remarks about investing in clean school buses, there's this: "So here’s the thing: Who doesn’t love a yellow school bus, right? Can you raise your hand if you love a yellow school bus, right?"

This person, who has been unimpressive in nearly every outing and goes through staff the way I go through toilet paper, needs to go.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, who until recently wanted to be President Newsom, acknowledges Democrats are getting destroyed on messaging. You'll have this when President Biden claims there are 54 states or VP Kamala Harris cheers our alliance with the Republic of North Korea. Newsom himself sent a rather shitty message when he was caught at a rather swanky French restaurant at the very time he was telling everyone else to stay home.

We need to do some soul searching and return to what we once were  - the party of the little guy.

So as a place holder we will elect the party of the big guy. With a side order of treason. That makes perfect sense.

I've lost respect for your opinion and apparent short memory. Think back to the years 2016-2020 for the worst communicator, or will you tell me being able to successfully communicate a message of hate and divisiveness to the racists, insurrectionists, and right-wing nut jobs makes a better communicator?

If you want Trump back in power, all you need do is nominate Biden and Harris as the Dem candidates in the next election. Democrats need to do some soul-searching and return to being the party that champions the working poor and blue collars. Listen to them and address their needs. That should be the top priority. We've lost that.

I hope everyone saw the “Reichstag Fire”. yesterday evening. Hitler managed to blame the act of one mad man on an entire political party arresting thousands and seizing power and suspending civil liberties. That was the threat to democracy that was suggested following the Pelosi attack. I don’t compare Biden to Hitler. Just the use of a catastrophic event to further a false narrative. A common sin of the failed. You are right, Bernie. Simply finding new candidates doesn’t work. There needs to be an effective change of policy. Otherwise, we can all descend to New York subway platforms where we will be most certainly be pushed into the paths of speeding trains. Law and order is not simply gun control.

The author barro got quite a lot of things wrong.
First --President Biden somehow was to know a war would break out in Ukraine so wanting to reduce fossil fuel use was a bad idea.
?
President Biden wanted to reduce fossil fuels before Putin decided to unleash the dogs of war.
barro blends the timeline and implies President Biden is the cause of high gas prices.
barro thinks that President Biden does not get to have any agenda because of a foreign government agenda---that is hogwash.
As to pipelines the purpose of that pipeline was to ship garbage crude to Texas and refine it(putting all the pollution in Texas) and the refined crude would then ship to Europe.
As to inflation he forgets corporate gouging and all the sweet cash businesses got handed to them--was that a bad idea?
Second --George Will is past his prime.
Lastly where did they point out the republican plan to make the US fantastic?
For example where is Mastriano's plan for Pa?

The sad truth for former Democrats like me is that AOC and her army of transvestites had become the heart and soul of the Democrat Party; with the consent of Pelosi and Schumer.

Republicans do not have one single idea to fix this economy. All they want to do is reverse Supreme Court decisions and take away freedoms. They’ll do nothing for the working class, and give corporations and the wealthy tax breaks.

If you’re reading this, you’re probably a poor working class citizen, why would you vote to empower the wealthy. You cannot hustle your way out of poverty, the bootstrap philosophy is a myth.

O'Hare,

You are obviously delusional. I just read today's Morning Call, and according to its opinion pages and letters to the editor (not to mention the daily political cartoons) this is going to be a blow out! I estimate AT LEAST 80/20 for the Dems. We even have a PhD student telling us opinions like yours about Fetterman are "ableism." And I haven't even mentioned all those LGBT+ votes that the MC feels the need to emphasize in all their political reporting. Surely, the only remaining daily Lehigh County paper and its diverse readership couldn't be that far out of touch. I'll have to tune into NPR (you know, our "public" news source) this morning just to confirm.

They hate the little guy that has to deal w/inflation, energy prices etccc. Hell my PPL bill just went up again for the third time this year. WHERE IS SUSAN WILD?

Anonymous said...

I totally agree and this is the best post by you in a long time. I just saw a poll where 67% of people want a third party because both of our political parties are so out of touch.

As far as Biden, for the love of God over the last week he's told me that gas was 5 bucks a gallon when he took office when it was $2.42, that he spoke to the man who invented insulin even though the guy was dead before he was born, that Fetterman's wife will be a great a "great, great lady in the senate" and so on and so on. He's 80 years old and has some kind of cognitive problem.

Clueless Joe has completely lost it. Latest gaffe was confusing Ukraine with Iraq and saying his son Beau died there. He is unfit for office. The problem is that Kamala is even worse. She is a cackling fool who has accomplished nothing. She is lazy and egoistic. Dems have a real dilemma with this clown combo.

I was a life long democrat who grew up in a true blue democrat household. I left the party in 2006 and never looked back. Not that I am a strong republican, it's just right now the lesser of two evils. Democrats used to champion the working class, now they cater to the non working class. Everything, and I mean everything, is defined by race and sexual preference. Socialism, and even communism are acceptable in the party today. If you don't go along with their view you are bullied, doxed, and destroyed. They seem to worry more about criminals than the working people. They champion free speech and tolerance until you have a different view than theirs. Many of the cities run by the far left are complete shit holes now, think LA, Seattle, Portland especially. They love to tell people how to live their life and what I must and must not accept. If they didn't have double standards they wouldn't have any standards at all. Republicans are handcuffed because of Trump. He needs to go. Between " the squad" and the "Trumpers" this country is in a world of shit LOL. People are so tribal today that it looks like they are going to elect a guy who clearly has brain damage to the senate. It's crazy.

Sorry Bernie, but the Dems have not forgotten the working class and have tried to push policies that help them AND are supported by the majority of Americans. The Republicans have been the party of obfuscation to make sure they don't get passed It suits their narrative, "what have the Dems done for you lately". Well not as much as they want when they run up against a brick wall. Also, what the new Republican party has successfully done with the advent of their amoral leader Trump, is to stoke the white fear of "replacement" especially in areas that have had big changes demographically. It's brought out the worst in folks and stoked the fires of racist fears. Despite the extreme "wokeism" of some liberal enclaves which is not helpful to the folks it tries to protect, there is no equivalence between the actions of the two parties. The Republicans have become the party of hate and tearing down institutions of democratic debate. There is no equally destructive strategy on the Dems' side, period.

Trump was a terrible President, but he knows how to sway a mob. He is a demagogue and by definition has to be an effective communicator.

Biden is the worst communicator I have seen in the Office of President in my lifetime. Sorry.

Bernie O'Hare said...

"Sorry Bernie, but the Dems have not forgotten the working class and have tried to push policies that help them AND are supported by the majority of Americans"

Huntress, I wish I could agree. I now the GOP is NOT the party of the working class, despite their lame attempts to portray themselves as such. But neither are the Dems. We have seen the middle class continue to shrink. Our children and grandchildren are NOT better off than we were. We as Dems have failed to address the reality that this economic anxiety results in right wing populism. Trump and his ilk can then falsely claim that the jobs we and our kids deserve are going to the OTHER (China, minorities, transgenders) instead of acknowledging that massive wealth has gone from the middle class into the hands of a few. Instead of focusing on these issues, we have lost our way and are obsessed with wokeness,

Bernie O'Hare said...

"As if Republicans give a shit about the working poor and blue collars."

They don't but are much more effective at pretending they do. We do need better communicators. Neither Biden nor Harris is effective as a communicator. So what do we do? We prop up a US Senate candidate who starts a debate with "Good Night, everybody!"

Funny that you continue to claim that the GOP is not the party of the blue collar working class when recent elections prove you wrong. Lower taxes, less federal spending, support of law enforcement and the military, securing our southern border are all issues that resonate with blue collar voters. The Democrat party has become the party of Hollywood and coastal elites, billionaires, and radical "social justice warriors." Real blue collar workers cannot stand those snobby, self-righteous types. The Republican party HAS become the party of the working class. Especially Hispanics who are flocking to the GOP.

Sorry denizens, the big blue wave is coming and your fake OZ, joker Mastriano, and multi millionaire Scheller can go back to living their privilege life instead of finding way to screw the hard working people of this State and Community. We do not need any autocratic leaders in office.
By the way please let me know what the Republicans are going to do about inflation? They do not have a plan!

The Huntress said...

It is not just the MAGA Republicans Bernie. Any Republican in the Senate who did not vote to impeach Trump and/or embraces election denial is trying to tear down our Democracy. They know what they are doing and don't care. They believe it will keep them in power and, depending what these mid-term results are, they could be proven right. It will be a sad day for our country and a huge blow to democracy itself. This is not hyperbole. Republican leadership around the country is turning more and more to the dictum "if I win, the election was legit, if I lose, there was fraud". That is the heart of an authoritarian state and how it stays in power.

Do I think Biden or Harris should run in 2024...absolutely not. We have better candidates to put forward that will know how to use the podium of the Presidency to much greater effect. The last great communicator was Bill Clinton. Not a perfect man and he kowtowed too much to the right (think NAFTA) at times, but a great charmer when he took the mic. In fact Bernie, if you want to point the blame as to who started the erosion of Democratic policies to support the middle class, I believe he is where you could start. However, some people will also say, yes, but he was a compromiser and got things done. Knowing when to compromise and when to stand your ground is the true art of governing.

I've said the same thing about the Obamas. Obama left the most weakened Democratic Party in history. They lost 1,100 state and federal legislative seats - as well as nunerous governorships. His was a cult of personality that Rs should pray comes back. They were never more successful and Biden (which is Obama's third term) is proving this again. Obama is flat out radioactive to Democrats, despite being clean cut and articulate (Biden's description). Lol. We need more Obama.

Anonymous said...

Sadly I have to say, I agree with you, but for different reasons. You and I know that Biden inherited a mess. Trump was coasting and still didn't understand that he wasn't king. (And still doesn't) Biden had mend-fences with the world, and stop the free-fall inflation that comes from corporations expecting to continue windfall profits. He's been doing that. Harris hasn't been inspiring on any level. Her public speaking is terrible and she has not grown into the position. Unfortunately, I haven't seen either party produce any inspiring younger leaders that I feel comfortable voting for. The Democrats are too scattered to come together and agree on anything, and the Republicans can't get rid of Trump who is busy taking all their money and smacking down any real leadership for fear of competition, and praising the clowns he's backed, like Walker. Look out Mister T, DeSantis is on your tail and he's much smarter than you (Harvard and Yale). I couldn't vote for that snake either. I'm a registered Republican who has never voted straight ticket. I nearly changed my registration but decided not to, incase Liz Cheney should run in a Republican primary. It's a long shot, but she is ethical and has much more courage than her male peers. And that woman from Arizona!? She out-Goldwaters Goldwater. Step-up folks, it's going to be another ride on the clown-bus, and this year we've got a bigger bus.

"Obama left the most weakened Democratic Party in history. They lost 1,100 state and federal legislative seats - as well as nunerous governorships. His was a cult of personality that Rs should pray comes back. "

I do agree that there was something of a cult about Obama in his first election, with the "Hope" posters and signs that evoke memories of Mao. His victory was very important. In his first term, he did exactly what Biden was attempting - he overreached. In his second term, he demonstrated reel weakness in foreign policy.

I supported him when he first ran. I did not vote to re-elect him. But I don't think he was a bad President. He was on the same level as the Bushes but not quite as good as Clinton. He sometimes made divisive remarks, but fare more often tried to bring people together.

I suspect that most of the reason why Obama was hated so much and led to the formation of the tea party is bc he is black. Those who despise him so much will be very offended at being called racist, but the animosity is totally out of proportion to Obama's mistakes.

Please if you can show how he was a terrible president... So how was the economy when he was president before the covid outbreak. So the fuel prices before covid..So the world as for war and countries invading or North Korea firing off missiles. So what China was up too??? Yes he didn't act presidential with the stupid tweets or name calling but as for the actual true running of this country he might be considered one of the best.

Everything with you has ugly racial overtones, Bernie. Just pull out the race card about disliking Obama. He was disliked because he was worshipped by the left for not accomplishing anything prior to his election. He was their elite. Aloof, professorial in his tone of voice, and he enjoyed ridiculing conservatives. He was far from being a uniter. He led a charmed life and has cashed in mightily on the lecture and book circuit. It's not racial. It's his personality and political viewpoints.

Now they're saying that if it wasn't for Obama, there never would have been a Trump. If this sounds like you, you might need an education.

Democrats should look for someone younger and likeable with austere roots; (Clinton-esque, Obama-esque) who's a family man/woman. They need to be closer to the center but it appears the appeasement is to the far fringes of the party instead of the 'normal' folk. And it should be someone who isn't a lapdog to the environmentalists. Most of that crowd couldn't care less about the average working man/woman and just wants to shut industry down and force feed things through constricting legislation. We need candidates who seek common sense ground there instead of bowing to them. Democrats are also perceived as softer on crime (unless you happened to be in Washington on Jan. 6) and that's an image they need to shake.

In short:

Younger
Family man/woman
Tough on crime
Seeks common ground instead of bowing to the lunatic fringe of the party.

Obama seemed to become more of an empty suit as time went on. I always felt like he'd be fun to have a beer with. Seems like a nice guy. His biggest problem IMO was that he was arrogant and thought he was always the smartest guy in the room. I guess all politicians are like that to a certain extent.

As far as Biden, I have been saying for 30 years that if I had to pick one politician to have a beer with it would be Biden. I could never vote for him but c'mon, the groping, hair sniffing, tall tales, and general frat boy personality would be fun LOL. Gas prices are 65% higher than the day Democrats won the White House. Every aspect of our daily lives are being negatively impacted as a result. And winter hasn’t even hit yet.

Millions of people being allowed illegal entry into the country. At whose cost? Mine? Yours?

Can’t vote for a Dem this year. Sorry. None of them

"was endorsed by Oprah Winfrey, a BILLIONAIRE.

And democrats are for the Little Guy?"
Under that logic trump is not for the Little Guy as he claims he is a BILLIONAIRE.
and trump endorsed Oz.

Appropriate that Clueless Joe made his bitter, divisive and nonsensical speech in a train station, because a freight train is barreling down on Washington next Tuesday in the form of a massive RED WAVE!!

This thing's over. Big cycle for Rs who get their payback. But let's move on the 2024 and Trump's return. Two years spent trying to bury the guy and he'd win in a landslide today. Let's do this, just to piss off Bernie and NPR. Trump/Lake '24. That's right.

Term limits and property tax reform. They all talk about. And do absolutely nothing about it. And they never will.

We're in for two glorious years of Republican-led investigations. Biden is about to be impeached and several in his inner circle are going to prison. Mayorkas is first for launching the largest child trafficking and fentanyl open market in civilization by opening the border to terrorists and slave cartels. He's getting frog-walked from DHS and going directly to his arraignment. No passing GO. No collecting $200.

January 2, 2023 is a federal holiday. The fun starts on Tuesday January 3. Game. Effing. On.

If the people of Pa. vote for the democrat Shapiro They will have buyer remorse just like they do for Biden --do not vote for Shapiro it is like extending the terrible Wolf who shut down schools killed elder citizens, and kills babies.

Biden is the greatest dividing President of all time after Lincoln--Just listen to asshole talk how he cuts down most of the American citizens except his left-wing idiots.
