Last week,
Allentown blogger Michael Molovinsky slammed The Morning Call over an election story slamming State Senate candidate Dean Browning for supposedly impersonating a gay, black guy. What Michael failed to realize at the time is that this lead story was actually two years old. And while a Morning Call editor took Molovinsky to task for complaining about a two-year-old story, the editor himself failed to realize that this ancient episode had somehow become the lead. Apparently, the online newspaper allows Google to decide what is important. This is a great way for candidates to use the online editions of newspapers to their advantage.

The two-year old story noted that Dean Browning, who is very miserable and white, may have been masquerading online as a gay, black guy. Dean is too straight-laced and intelligent to pull off something quite that remarkably stupid. But his opponent, Nick Miller, has rightly been having fun with this story, and was blasting it all over social media. Nick probably had no idea that these social media ads would pay a divided that resulted in a two year old story topping the online edition of The Morning Call's "Lehigh Valley News". In effect, The Morning Call has been advertising Nick's campaign. This is great for Nick, but does undermine the newspaper's reputation for objectivity.
Editor Mike Miorelli, and not Google algorithms, should decide what stories lead, especially during election cycles.

Morning Call "allows" Google to decide because Google does decide. Unless you block search engine crawlers with added coding, Google algorithms rank importance based on a number of factors, including hits from visitors.
Blocking Google crawlers is suicide for a website.

As if on cue, Miroelli's editorial yesterday praised the paper's election coverage, while the homepage continued to show older stories, supposedly evaluating the accuracy of claims and counterclaims by candidates.
IMO, those headlines always seem more favorable to one party, and those older stories are the ones that keep appearing. But, I suppose if the newspaper was as fair and balanced as they claim, we bloggers would have less to write about.

I didn't realize "Lehigh Valley News" was a MC initiative. I wonder why they don't try to expand their web presence using their already established brand?
And, yea, it's shitty to have your news site organized by some algorithm, but Browning did, in fact, use a sock puppet account and it is still pretty funny.
Let’s face it, the Morning Call is no longer trustworthy. Sure, there are items in there that are still of value like Obituary notices, the Weather report, and Calendar of Events. Most of the rest, however, is “piped in” by outside sources, most of which is tainted with political propaganda that is decidedly Liberal Democrat messaging.
The Morning Call is no longer YOUR paper, it is the political weapon of OTHERS.
Of course, many who read the Morning Call are pleased with what they are being told by the newspaper. Life is so much easier to just accept whatever someone else tells you in print or other media. But, after doing a little research of your own, you will likely find you are being duped into thinking the way some political party or corporate special interest wants you to think.
Even the few remaining local paid contributors there, are intertwining a political spin in their pieces. Or, maybe, just pulling slant out of a devious Associated Press bomb intended to promote some false narrative it wants to push.

This is why that social media website with no offices and reporters whining from their basements and pretending they have a "union" feel so empowered to be racists without fear of penalty. Scratch Miorelli and you quickly reveal a nasty bigot who despises minorities almost as much as bottom feeding bloggers.
Miller's approach to ensure schools are properly funded at the state level is enough to secure my vote. Others supporting a gubernatorial candidate who wants to defund schools is nothing more ducking to states responsibility that will require districts to raise taxes at the local level. We need to stabilize education funding, not undermine it.

I certainly was dubious about Dean's denial at first. But there apparently really is a gay black guy from Philly who followed Dean on Twitter. Dean was attempting to quote the guy. I have very little in common with Dean's political views, but he has always been honest with me. So I do accept his explanation.

No it's not. I, and not Google, decide what stories lead on my blog. The same is true of reputable news sites like NYT, WashPo and WSJ. Some news sites have a section set aside for trending stories. I could see that. But a two-year old story is no longer news. It might be history, and it is misleading to place a two-year old story under "Lehigh Valley News." In this case, Nick's campaign made that a trending story by publishing ads linking to it on social media.

It's a Dem-leaning district, so this race should be won by Miller. But Dean has a path to victory. He needs the northern tier of NorCo to come out strong for him and he needs Allentown voters to stay home. If that happens, Dean wins.
Had to laugh at a recent Paul Muschick column in which he complains about Doug Mastriano’s controlled media access. Everyone knows most news outlets these days lean to the left. But, even more, there are repeated misquotes, distortions, and omissions within a reporter’s duties these days. Every Republican candidate should be very selective about who they talk to and on what subject.
If you are someone who relies solely on the Morning Call for candidate evaluation it’s essential to consider other sources, too. For all its faults, the internet can lead you to actual full, complete, and unedited statements. Even videos of actual speeches and remarks can be found. Takes a little time, though. Also true, Google pushes only what it likes to the top of its search results. Google does NOT play it down the middle either.
For those who like the messages the Morning Call tries had to push, enjoy! Just know, quite a bit found there is lacking in accuracy and presented with a liberal bias. For me, there are better places that come closer to the truth.
Get to know Doug Mastriano on you own. I think you will find, of the two candidates, Mastriano is the better choice to fix Pennsylvania.
I don't get claims that the Mcall is very biased. The biggest indicator is often the stories of the newspapers opinion writers. Currently Paul Muschick has a decidedly (and welcome) independent streak. He often takes to task both political clubs. I think he and the paper do an admirable job with less and less resources after many dramatic cuts of staff.
The Morning Call is very white and very woke. The funniest visual is their "reporters" working from their kitchen tables or while parked in front of Panera Bread. It's enough to make one weep like during the last scene of Norma Rae.
The photoshop on Dean's photo is unfair. Dean has nicer teeth.
Thanks for this information, Bernie. I have noticed that TMC has many outdated stories and have wondered the reason. The editor likes to toot his own horn, but he has a terrible website. And breaking news, IMO, shouldn’t include high school sports.

IT is all in what attracts attention whether it is good or it is bad. The more clicks the more money made either way. I am sure people can sight examples on both side. The drama and stupid generates clicks and then cash.

At this hour, The Morning Call is breaking a story about the possible sinking of the British passenger liner RMS Titanic operated by White Star Line. They're sending Bill White out in a dinghy to see if any black people were marginalized in the possible sinking. Stay tuned for more ....
New York Times and Washington Post are definitely NO LONGER reputable news sites, if they ever were. Big circulations, yes. Balanced reporting, no. Wall Street Journal is not nearly as biased as those two. Paul Muschick and Bill White always lean liberal, but, that’s their choice and the Morning Call is getting what it wants.
