Tom Carroll's Tacky Obit
I was sorry to read of the passing of Maj. Tom Carroll, father of NorCo's GOP candidate for DA. As much as I dislike Carroll'sdivisive politics and personality clashes, I am sorry for his loss. But I am repulsed by his politicization of his own father's death. Using an obituary to solicit campaign donations is just downright tacky.
The obituary ends with this: "In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to - Elect Tom Carroll."
Maybe he can have a fundraiser at the funeral.

Holy smokes, that is tacky as HELL! Disgraceful.
Well isn't this the guy who has nude pictures on a gay dating site?
My old man wanted donations to go to a dog shelter. I hate stupid dogs. I stopped that shit. Guy was dead and couldn't tell anyone what to do anymore. It's a lesson for us all.
We all grieve in different ways
Did you says a politician was involved.
It seems like the Kübler-Ross model of stages of grief needs to be updated with a 6th phase; Shilling for your political ambitions.
Could it be possible that his wife, not his son did this?
Its also a little tacky to make an issue of this.
Was a Epstein pulled on this man from his bed rail?
Didn’t know the deceased and don’t know the son, but is it possible that this was in accord with the deceased’s wishes? If so, should not the request be honored despite the judgement of others?
No. See dog shelter post above. When you're dead, you're dead. You can't take it with you and it's no longer your dough. Life is tough. Wear a cup.
You've got to be kidden.
7:49 AM -- It's people like this that are the reason to get a will done.
Think about this. You work your whole life trying to create wealth and at the end you want to charitably give a portion of it away to something that meant a lot to you. A will can accomplish that with the power of law behind it. With intestate estates you have to then hope you don't have and bottom feeding relatives who see a free paycheck from work they didn't do and they take it to buy a Nintendo Switch and some weed.
Get a will, don't leave it to the State to tell you how to divide up your estate because between the State and 7:49, generally you're going to have a bad outcome.
Another example of the low level of debate, anything for political advantage, even attacking the innocent dead.
Bernie, when your time is up who do you want the donations to go to?
"Another example of the low level of debate, anything for political advantage, even attacking the innocent dead."
What is really low level is using your father's death to seek political contributions. I think I made that clear. The obit is repulsive.
Agreed. Tacky. I've seen requests made for monetary donations to help with funeral expenses (why waste money on supporting the florist industry), but to request money be sent to an election campaign is just trumpery.
I could and have seen, "In lieu of flowers, vote for ----." That's unusual, but is inoffensive. But demanding money is just tacky.
If you've ever met Tom, you know he's not after his father's money...just his shirt collection.
"But demanding money is just tacky."
There is no "demanding" of money. Perhaps, the donations idea came from someone other than the candidate and Mr. Carroll was simply respecting their wishes. By assuming the candidate used the obit for his own gain, which would speak quite negatively to the character of the candidate, your own personal opinion of Mr. Carroll has shown through.
"In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to - Elect Tom Carroll."
Seems pretty clear to me. That obit looks like it was written by Carroll, and it is very clear he knew it contained a demand for a political contribution instead of flowers. He politicized his own father's death, and this is totally consistent with other disgusting things he has done.
Apparently your readers do not read obits. If they did, they would know that this appeal for funds is nothing new. In the past few years, obits have become fund raising opportunities for some.
As disgraceful as I, a 77 year old feels this is, it seems to have become acceptable.
I donate a book in memory of the deceased to the library closest to where they lived.
I have no issue with solicitations to contribute to some charity, but requests for political contributions are tacky.
By your own words, Bernie, you do not know for sure. "That obit looks like it was written by Carroll," is not proof. "In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to - Elect Tom Carroll." is not "a demand for a political contribution instead of flowers". It may be tacky, but your assumption the request came from the candidate himself is just that, an assumption. It may be a correct one, but it is still an assumption based on your opinion of the candidate.
Jeff, if a tacky obit was a crime requiring proof beyond a reasonable don’t,you’d be right. For purposes of this blog, there is no doubt in my mind.
I would bet that his Dad’s dying wish is for his son to become DA so what is wrong with his request in that regard?
Why not?
I’d do it for my son.
Bitter, party of one...
Bernie O'Hare your judgement of others shows the lack of integrity. You are tacky calling out
a personal situation.
I wouldn't vote him either, but your lack of self awareness is incredible. Pretty scummy thing for you to write about
What's scummy is an obit asking for campaign donations. If you're scummy enough to do that, I'm scummy enough to point it out.
