I'm unsure exactly how much CACLV is involved in local summer park programs. In Allentown, for example, this eight-week program has been run by the City for the past 106 years, long before Alan Jennings was a community organizer. Other Lehigh Valley communities do the same thing. Yet it is CACLV, and not any of these municipalities, that yesterday issued a press release implying that children in these programs have only limited access to water.
The release, entitled "Drinking Water Access across Valley Summer Meal and Recreation Programs Becomes Concerning," asserts "children at outdoor summer meal and community recreation programs within Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton do not have full access to drinking water." It goes on to claim that many parks have no drinking water, and then pats itself on the back because Costco and Nestle donated bottled water.
I find it very hard to believe that local municipalities would schedule summer playground programs without giving children access to drinking water. That would be criminal.
So what I find "concerning" is the CACLV "news" release.

Mr. Jennings is not now nor has he ever been a community organizer. He is an administrator who styles himself a community organizer who has a pronounced talent for self promotion and has made a career out of shaking down bankers.
He has a very healthy relationship with himself and
was a leader in promoting the sell off of the Allentown Water System, a scam that allowed Edwin Pawlowski to extend his protracted political leadership in the City Without Limits.
And so yes, Jennings has a personal history with water and the L.C.A.

Alan Jennings need publicity as much or more than the thirstiest kid on the playground needs air or water. Without it he would surely dry up and blow away.
This is hardly original insight and this attempt inserting himself into the news is far from his most creative effort, but any visibility is far, far better than none at all.
Alan has long prided himself on his ability to garnish press and no one in the Lehigh Valley has been more successful than the man who Emma often referred to as “Allentown’s own Jesus Christ”.
Honk if you love Alan.

A shameless and pathetic exploitation of the children who are obstinately the beneficiaries of this crass ploy.

The Lehigh Valley Food Policy Council (LVFPC) works to strengthen summer meals access and discovered during site visits that children at outdoor summer meal and community recreation programs within Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton do not have full access to drinking water.
Many of the parks across the Lehigh Valley do not have a source for drinking water. This critical issue affects children’s health and well-being. The federal summer food service program provides 8 ounces of milk for a child, but not water. During the most recent heat wave when record temperatures reached the high 90’s, site coordinators scrambled to provide cooler jugs of water for the children attending their programs. “In the morning rush, children often don’t think about bringing a water bottle, and not all children may have a portable water bottle to bring with them. Then what about a refill?” said Gabby Lewis, Site Supervisor in Vanderveer Park in Easton. “We offer alternative activities out of the heat and keep the kids shaded as much as possible, but ready access to drinking water to keep hydrated is crucial in this summer heat.”
In collaboration with Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley (CACLV), LVFPC mobilized resources to provide drinking water to the outdoor recreation sites and summer programs in our community. We thank Costco Wholesale Allentown Warehouse for donating an entire pallet of water and Nestle for donating additional cases to meet this short-term need. “This is awesome! Our kids will really appreciate this, and it is so important for them to have enough water when they are active in our programs in this summer heat,” said John Hrebik Allentown Parks and Recreation Director. The Greater Valley YMCA is distributing to their outdoor sites across the Valley and Bethlehem Parks and Recreation is distributing to their sites. LVFPC continues to work on a better solution to outdoor water access for upcoming seasons.”
