Zoners Approve Consulting Biz in Historic Bethlehem

John Brew's first attempt to establish his community bank consulting business in Historic Bethlehem ended in failure. After a lengthy hearing, zoners denied his request in a close, 2-2, vote.

But it was a different story on August 28, thanks to a new zoning ordinance that permits some commercial use of corner properties in residential districts, even those located at the corner of N. New and E. Market Streets. By a 4-0 vote, zoners agreed to allow Brew to locate his business at a Bed and Breakfast known as The Bethlehem Inn.

Their decision followed a lengthy hearing.

Blogger's Note: I was at Hanover Township when this meeting occurred, so I lack first hand knowledge and am relying on Lynn Olanoff's report in The Express Times, along with several firsthand accounts with people who attended. It was a long night.

The road to Allentown and
Reading is now started in Bethlehem. Congratulations folks.

This is what you get when you hire people who do not live in the city to be ahead of the Planning and Zoning department.

If you want to be mad at anybody be mad at the Mayor who appointed the Allentown Hack to do our new zoning laws.

She drives home every night and could not give one ounce of concern for your beautiful home in the nicest part of Bethlehem.

Can you say Atiah?

That anonymous remark is way off base. Darlene Heller is a consummate professional whose planning skills have made Bethlehem much better than just about any other community in Pa. Bethlehem's new ZO, on which she did most of the heavy lifting, is the product of years of her work. It was also a very transparent process in which the public was intimately involved. I don't know if Mayor Callahan or Cunningham appointed Heller. But as far as I am concerned, her planning department is the best I've seen anywhere. And I've got news for you. The fact that she lives outside the city likely allows her to make more professional decisions, instead of allowing herself to be influenced by the real hacks, which include anonymous cowards like you who are unable to sign your name.

Miss Heller carries herself with integrity and more moral ethics than most in the public sector. She is a real professional and her dicisions can not be swayed.

Mr. Brew is a class act. This business will do no harm to the neighborhood.

There is apparently going to be a town hall meeting about repealing the amended ordinance tomorrow at 7.
