Scott Janney Seeking GOP Nod for LV's State Senate Seat Held By Boscola

I've already told you that State Senator Lisa Boscola is seeking re-election in Pa.'s 18th Senatorial District, which includes parts of Northampton and Lehigh Counties. On Friday, I speculated that Taiba Sultana, a former Easton City Council member would primary her. At the time, to told you that no GOP candidate had announced, but I was wrong. Scott Janney announced his candidacy on WAEB-AM 790 on November 7, the day after a blue wave swept a large number of Democrats into municipal office. He also followed up with an announcement later that evening at the local tea party.

I had spoken to Janney prior to November's election, and he told me he planned to announce his candidacy. I never received anything and thus concluded he was having second thoughts. I saw nothing in any of the local news sources, either.

When he appeared on WAEB on November 7, radio host Bobby Gunther Walsh drilled home a point that, when John Merhottein ran for Boscola's seat four years ago, nobody knew him. He failed to make himself known by appearing on programs like his or using news sources or social media to get his message out there.

I disagree with that assessment. Merhottein did make the rounds and did use social media but had no money to spend against a very popular and formidable foe. Well, I think Janney has made a bigger mistake. Other than a right-wing radio show and tea party, I've seen nothing from more mainstream outlets like local new organizations or blogs.

Boscola's State Senate district includes a lot of voters who would rather die before listening to WAEB or going to a tea party meeting. It also includes more centrist voters who are looking for a change from Boscola. But how can they be persuaded to vote for him if they don't even know he's in the hunt?

According to his webpage, Janney raises money for a 12-state region of the Salvation Army, perhaps one of the best and altruistic charities in existence. He touts a great deal of success as a fundraiser and told radio host Walsh that he would use those skills to raise money in his own race. But Janney was also involved in the local county races and even spoke at several county council meetings. The fundraising of those candidates was anemic, to put it mildly. It's one thing to raise money for a worthwhile charity, but quite another to raise money for a party that supports the invasion of Greenland, Venezuela, Canada, Iran, Mexico and Cuba while refusing to do a damn thing to help millions of people who need help paying for healthcare.

Janney outlines his positions here. I suspect he's going to have problems. I don't like Boscola myself, but I dislike his stances on issues more.

Scott stands for common sense, integrity and America first. Truly an honorable man. Your opinion of his platform clearly is an example of where you stand, Bernie. Good luck, Scott.

Starting off with BGW is the kiss of death. It is mostly only delusional MAGA cultist listen in. tRUMP, being his own worst enemy has the MAGAs and others rethinking themselves.

Thanks for your comments, Bernie. This is my first real intro to a lot of your readers – especially the liberals & the “centrist voters who are looking for a change” - the folks you point out who didn’t hear John Merhottein’s message. I appreciate the spotlight, especially since you and I see many things through different lenses.
You’re right that I haven’t done a big traditional-media blast yet. But it’s not because I plan a race made up of only talking to the right. Established voices on my side told me to hold off any announcement until February 17th. Classic playbook.
I’m choosing a slower, deliberate rollout that fits how I’ve always worked.
As you mention, I led the Salvation Army’s planned giving team from Kentucky to Maine. When I took over, they hadn’t hit goal in four years, and were stuck in the neighborhood of forty million per year. I helped the same team of skillful and experienced fundraisers built to $98.6 million last year. Not with flash, but listening, strategy, and results. Same approach here.
For anyone curious where I stand, scottjanney.com has the videos up. The top ten videos are on the issues people are really talking about, and then there are seven about me. A good place for someone who read your blog to start is the one you mention: #4, “Leadership at The Salvation Army.” It shows the kind of results I got at Temple University, Villanova University, The Salvation Army, and the listening and team building techniques I plan to use to make progress in Harrisburg.
And on those issues that you think define the Conservative. I don’t think their the concern of a small echo-chamber. The Democrat leaders are on the wrong side of every 80-20 or 90-10 issue. Look through the ten issues videos and let me know what you think. Maybe your readers will raise their issues right here.
When I talk to everyday people in the Valley - especially the quiet moderates - they’re looking for change on those issues, and they don’t want Pennsylvania to be a contrarian state, like Minnesota, Oregon or New York, where the Democrat Elites hold full sway.
Thanks again for letting me jump in. I’ll keep reading your posts, and I hope your readers will keep the conversation going.

Scott Janney

The Salvation Army may or may not agree with the views of the candidate. I don't speak for The Salvation Army, Philanthropy.org, The Wesleyan Holiness Connection, or the Republican Party. My words are my own.

LOL these are topics R’s always run on YET here’s what happens!
- Protect 1st Amendment rights? You mean pressure public figures with threats from the Justice Dept. if they speak out about the current administration? Or cut funding to media outlets that support all opinions?
- Cut taxes? You mean cut as many employees you can to show you are “saving” money only to then use all that money and then some on god knows what.:.
- save woman’s sports? Cool you now have support of rural PTA moms!
This list of principles must be a copy and paste form from some “Running as a Republican” Reddit forum. And outside of the woman sports topic they aren’t getting much done

Our education system and road network are in shambles in Pennsylvania. Gasoline prices and electricity costs are out of control. All our money in the Lehigh Valley gets sent to the endless waste fest in Philly where SEPTA is perennially broke because of mismanagement. Our taxes always go up. This is all because of Democrat dominated state and local governments. How in the world is it not time for a change? I’m voting for Scott Janney in this upcoming election.

He thinks he is going to win with that platform, starts off with the republican buzz word nonsense "Election Integrity" i mean WTF is goffredo/Brown his campaign Mgr? his entire messaging can be found on any right wing disinformation sight, save your money and don't donate to this clown. As they say he has a snowballs chance in hell to beat Boscolla.

VOTE THE MAN NOT THE PARTY. Unfortunately, Donald Trump has convinced me that I will never, ever, vote for a Republican again in my lifetime. Scott Janney might be a nice guy, but until he decries the scumbag sitting in the White House he will never get my vote. What is happening to our Country? Where are the Charlie Dent's and the free thinkers of our Country. Sending government troops into states to silence the voice of those who dare exercise their Constitutional rights. You want my vote Scott? Tell me where you stand on these human right issues. Then and only then, will I vote for you and other R's.

Good morning
I read both your pieces on Tara and Scott Janney. More interesting were the comments from readers. It really seems we live in 2 realities. R's see what is happening in our county as just a continuation of the last administration. If Tara wanted to represent all the people living in this county, there would have been changes to the staff and not just holdovers. But that's not the case.
I know Scott Janney. A better person you won't find. The comments from your "D" readers speak of him as a standard "R" based on what he said. They are so wrong. They also won't give him the chance to do better for them than the entrenched Democrat who has become so comfortable in her roll. That is the shame of it.
I hope you give him at least a fair impartial chance and take off your "D" glasses. He deserves it.
Happy 2026.

Explain please what you mean by "America First"?

I missed them also. All I see is common sense

Take a look at his social media. He is a Trump MAGA nutjob. No chance he beats Lisa. Lisa will destroy him in the general.

As a Saucon Valley Student, I am very proud to be able to support Scott Janney for this seat. I’ve worked with him countless times and it is clear that Scott wants the best for the people he is serving. He is a great person and better than that he is a tremendous leader, he takes charge and gets done what needs to be done. Scott doesn’t want this seat for a career, he wants the seat to get something done and to stop the insane bills that they are trying to pass in the State Senate. I have no doubt in my mind that Scott is the best person for this job and will do a great job especially compared to his opponent. As the younger generation Scott makes us feel heard and puts the important topics first, it’s time for a change.

Scott may be a nice guy but beneath the surface he’s just another partisan right wing Republican. You want a centrist you have one in Senator Boscola who for her entire career has been an independent thinker who works in a bipartisan manner.

Hard to compare as he's not been in office. I for one would be interested in a fresh perspective. One Lisa can't have after all these years.

I’ve seen his post’s on Twitter, he’s typical MAGA, no better, no worse.

I’ve seen nothing that differentiates him from the rest.

Goofredo & Brown are the worst- they've destroyed the R's

You need help!

Scott is a breath of fresh air and also and a spiritual servant of God. Hard to beat that.

I’ve seen his comments on your blog, he seems like a nice enough guy. Reasonable and sensible maybe even someone that could make Lisa work for it. Then I looked into him. His website is bare bones it has some basics and the standard fully agreeable views on it. I mean sure who doesn’t want to pay less in taxes, and I think most people would agree with supporting law enforcement. Then you get some wedge issues like gun ownership and protecting girls sports (which both Boscola and Miller voted with Republicans on last year.) It does not feel that any of his wedge issues would be powerful enough against someone like Boscola. In fact it feels they will work against him. He wants to enforce our immigration laws, I think most would agree with that basic statement but ask in 10 months after more ice raids and on something more specific. Likely not a winning argument but possibly a losing one depending on the national environment. Not only will he be running in the headwinds of a fairly popular incumbent in a safer district but also running against a President and Congress that is increasingly bogged down in random ways to spend political capital. (I like whole milk what’s that whole thing about, not to mention all the more serious things Venezuela, Greenland, Iran etc) Winning against all that is a tall task. It would take someone of immense character charisma and yes also money. From what I can tell Scott’s campaign will run towards the MAGA base. Something no one should be recommending with this environment. His website has an endorsement video from Heather Christein who ran for Bethlehem School Board and also is the local Early Vote Action coordinator (might be a different title) this is the organization that Scott Pressler runs, their mission is to sign up Republicans to vote. It appears to work, at least when Trump is on the ballot. (This is a long separate conversation) His Twitter account is a fun read, no engagement while tweeting about whatever new maga issue is for the day/week. It is constantly base engagement which isn’t exactly bad but not what you will need to win against Boscola who has years of goodwill with incumbency and name recognition. To sum up his run: what if we ran a more business centric maga (a la Brown/Giovanni) rather than someone more “out there” (Lynch) on our same tired issues against a popular incumbent in what is likely a strong blue wave year with no coattails to ride. The result- easy Boscola win. She benefits from her incumbency, and the national environment and her relative centrism, shedding few lefty votes that she makes up for with independents. Scott likely doesn’t even turn up the base that much just the same with those above him on the ballot. It’s a fools errand.

I was considering Mr. Janny as his bio interested me until he referred to Democrats as elites (they are not) in order to discredit and demonize his opponents. It seems his MAGA flag is flying full, and he is more of the MAGA same old thing.

Anonymous said...

If he's MAGA, he's no servant of God. The two are diametric opposites

Anonymous said...

Define maga? All republicans? So all republicans aren't people of God? How does that really sound to you?

Anonymous said...

From your long statement no republican would change your vote

Anonymous said...

You are correct that Democrats are not the Elite. When I call out the “Democrat Elites,” I’m referring to that small group that ran the country while proclaiming Joe Biden was “as short as a tack,” then didn’t give Democrat voters a choice about the next president with a vote through a Democratic primary. Democrats, especially elected Democrats, get their marching orders from the top and support the Elites every time they are required to. The Apocalypse Now blog quoted here on Friday put Lisa in that camp by saying, “she’s ultimately with the Democrat caucus on nearly every vote.”

I’m curious. Does this change your mind? I understood you to say the only reason you don’t support me is that I called the [ordinary] Democrats elites.

My long statement wasn’t about changing my vote but pointing out how hard it will be for him to change other people’s votes beyond party people on either side.

At the function I was introduced to Janney at, one that was wholly inappropriate for campaigning, he was doing the rounds wearing a Janney for State Senate pin, flanked by some loud lady wearing a Donald Trump ugly christmas sweater. He promptly told me he was there at the behest of "Lehigh Valley MAGA".

Janney gives off scuzzy used car salesman vibes, and to say he's a partisan is an understatement.

Lisa will tell us Seniors that she is going to get rid of property school tax. Every election cycle that is her pitch to get votes. After the election nothing is done by her. She has lied to us for years.
