GIANT's Self Checkout Has Me Pegged

Because I like fresh fruit and produce, I am at GIANT food market nearly every day. But I've been profiled as a potential shoplifter. I've never seen a store cop spying on me. But the problem always occurs when I check out. I use the self checkout, and it has me pegged as a produce purloiner.

Here's what happens. I started using the self checkout during the pandemic. No problem. But for the past month or so, it prevents me from checking out. Instead of ringing up my order and letting me pay, I get a flashing message to tell me "help is on the way."

A clerk has to come and clear me.

At first, it only did this when I bought garlic. I figured it didn't like the smell. But now, no matter what I buy, I have to wait.

"What's your problem?" the clerk asks.

"The machine says I need help."

Nearby shoppers begin smirking

Yesterday, a clerk asked me how I was doing as I carefully approached the machine.

"How are you doing today?" she pleasantly asked.

"I'm not sure yet. I'll know soon."

Sure enough, the machine again told me I need help.

Incidentally, GIANT has a weird robot patrolling the store. It has a tendency to slam into me if I am near it.

Time to start shopping at Aldi. It's cheaper.

Those butchers at GIANT are a bunch of smart asses too. I ask the butcher at the meat counter for his cheapest cut of meat. He gave me what appeared to be the testicles of a deer. when I told him what I thought they were, he said I was right they were under a buck. Smart ass.

I think some of those cashiers are a little snooty. My bill was $25.45. So i gave the cashier $30.45 because I didn't want her to give be a bunch of ones. She said I couldn't do that and she never understood that all she had to do was give me a $5.00 bill and we were even. Finally I gave up in frustration and she said I should get in another line next time. I said something under my breath and she said why don't you just give me an Australian Kiss. I asked her what the hell is an Australian Kiss she said, It's just like a french kiss but its down under.
Smart ass.

That happened to me at Wegmans. I asked why and they said it was the meat was to expensive and it needed to be cleared by the clerk. It happened again and that time I didn't buy meat. I told them this was odd. I talked to a manager and she seemed disingenuous with her explanation. That was about 3 years ago. It never happened again.

Many vegetables do not have a barcode, also you often have to add the number of items. Probably just senior ignorance as to how to use the machine. Not a conspiracy, but just some paranoia that seems to be problem for bloggers.

Having worked in loss prevention, I can state that it's impossible for a scanner to be used in the way you suggest. You look shifty and untrustworthy, though. Aldi, beware.

Aldi is cheaper than most and also has nice fresh fruits and produce.
I do most food shopping there. Must be good. Very busy place.

The goofy looking robot's name is Marty. He and I squared off in the bakery department one day. I had to use a basketball reverse manuever to get past him. I love Aldi, but their fresh fruit and vegetable offerings are no match for Giant.

Go to Walmart instead. Everything is free once you slip by the elderly greeter at the front.

It's common knowledge that you need help.

That Giant robot is collecting your thoughts and impregnating your being with AI that makes you do dumb things like buy Swiffer refills when you don't even own a Swiffer. I creep up behind the robot and announce there's a wet cleanup with casualties at register 4. It sets off an hilarious chain of events.

Also, this is Pennsylvania. Fresh produce does not exist in these parts at this time of year. It all comes from far away and you have to wonder how it still looks like produce after such a long journey to Nazareth.

You claim the robot was following you around the store. Was it a male robot or a female robot?
I know how men are attracted to you. I remember you telling me about the genie you found in the bottle while walking along the shore. The genie offered you one wish for freeing her from the bottle. She offered you a great memory or a very large penis and you can't remember which one you asked for.

Giant does not have true butchers. That too has become a thing of the past in most super markets.

Neither is a match for Valley Farms...

Bernie,
They got your number! Giant has scanners above every isle counting every item you place in your cart. Then when you check out if there number is less then your scanned amount then you get flagged. As a common criminal, a shoplifter. It’s as simple as that. So please stop the shenanigans or the Republicans will lower the corporate taxes to cover the loss and call it inflation, then we all will pay for your misdeeds.

Into pegging eh?

Valley Farms has been funding illegal immigrants on farms for years

We know McClure and Dertinger have pegged you but now Giant

I have news for you.....Your government has been funding illegal immigrants on farms way before a grocery store in Bethlehem.

ALDI and Giant are two VERY different stores, but yes, the "help is on the way" and store robot are "features" at Giant. I tried ALDI and found myself buying stuff I don't ordinarily (which stores are designed for but I am immune at traditional ones), and not coming home with stuff I needed because they didn't carry it.

Correct - a neighbor worked as a butcher at Giant for years, and he lost his job maybe 15 years or more ago at this point - they didn't need real butchers anymore.

She should be fired.

Going to try that.

A few years ago, I went to the Giant in Hellertown. As I approached the self checkout, I noticed that the guy who was just there scanned his groceries, but didn't pay for them. He was walking out with a cart full of groceries. I started to call to him that he "forgot" to pay, but he started moving faster. I went to the associate who was manning the self check out machines and told her (loudly) "That man right there (pointing to him) did not pay". Incidentally, a store manager was standing there, too.

The manager said, "There is nothing that we're allowed to do about it". The store associate "cleared" my machine so I could start scanning my order.

Also, I have a friend who worked part time at Marshalls. Some guy took a cart loaded it up with clothing and walked out the door. A manager asked him to help stop the guy. They did, police were called and the guy was arrested. A week later, he and the store manager were fired for not following protocol.

Good grief!!!

This is what our society has become supporting fups failures and fools and allowing them to rule our world instead of destroying the stupid pieces of shit at whatever level they are.

If you don't give a shit about others, only think about yourself, and have no scruples you can do almost anything, even become president of the united states. Oh look Trump.

Education today: people just do what the machine says, wihtout thinking.
