Zrinski Attempts to Minimize Gracedale's Problems

At last night's meeting of Northampton County Council, Executive Tara Zrinski spoke twice about Gracedale, both during courtesy of the floor and in her Executive report.  In hir first oration, she spoke about the good care the nursing facility provided to her mother, something she has done several times in the past. She never mentioned that this care was during a time when Jennifer Stewart King, and not Michelle Morton, was the Administrator. In her Exec report, she tried very hard to paint the home in a positive light. She noted that there were 14 citations in 2025, but only 4 "technical" violations this year. She did not point out that we're not even halfway through the year. She said the root cause of these problems go back several years. She said none of the citations this year reflect a failure to provide care, which is utter nonsense. In fact, the poor staffing is precisely why the home was cited in January and again in May.  I'd also say that a failure to follow doctor's orders, especially concerning medications and blood sugar levels, is indicative of outright negligence.

She did finally mention Gracedale's downgrade from a Provisional I to a Provisional II license. She believes the root cause was the county's admission process, under which some risky residents were accepted. She said the home is now more selective in who it accepts.

I'd like to know what the DOH has been at Gracedale 27 times since Michelle Morton was hired as Administrator. It's true that most of these complaints are unfounded, but the sheer number suggests to me that employees, residents and family are unhappy. This reflects on Morton's leadership.

I'd like to know why, after being repeatedly cited for falling below the state minimum nursing care requirements, Gracedale was cited for that again and with a provisional license. Amazingly, Morton claimed this shortage was caused by call offs. Why on earth would the home fail to plan for call offs?

I'd like to know how Gracedale, whose very mission is to take care of people, could ignore doctor's orders.

We got answers to none of these questions because as soon as she was done with her Exec report, Zrinski asked for an Exec session to discuss "personnel."  And accompanying her into the back room were Morton and Human Services Director Sue Wandalowski, who is supposed to have nothing to do with Gracedale. That's the whole point of the new positions sought by Zrinski. No doubt, the purpose of the exec session was to scapegoat someone for problems that have grown worse since Michelle Morton arrived.

Finally, I'd look to know when Zrinski was apprised of the downgrade to Provisional II. It certainly belies her previous reports.

Don't ask Kraft, Warren or Keegan.

TZ - typical poll - deny/smoke and mirrors/semantics and no sense of reality. She continues to drown in her own words.

She's incompetent.

Tara Zrinski is listening to the wrong people. If I remember correctly correctly
Gracedale did not have these issues when Dave Holland was the administrator. Sad to hear that Gracedale is now screening admissions to not accept some cases. Gracedale is one of the last County run nursing homes in the State. It is worth saving. Just look at the mission statement. It will take the right people to fix this any they were not in the executive session last night.

From the original post: “She believes the root cause was the county's admission process, under which some risky residents were accepted. She said the home is now more selective in who it accepts.”

Doesn’t this go against the whole fraudulent reason that Zrinski and other politicians always tell us is why the county has to continue to own Gracedale?

So the people who have nowhere else to go are taken care of? So the least among us are treated with dignity?

I guess that all goes out the window depending on the situation. How convenient.

Tara’s report about Gracedale had more holes in it than Swiss cheese. Her nauseating sing song of total misinformation is a disgrace, Bernie is absolutely correct and Tara is trying to twist this into something other than what it is; namely, a shameful failure. What is of a bigger concern is that those responsible for the failure as well will take no responsibility for it and they continue to downplay the significance of a facility with a Provisional III license. I can’t imagine how some people sleep at night but it must be because they have no conscience.

Kraft is a bully and holland is correct why are we just throwing money at an issue and creating more positions. These issues should be corrected with the staff they have and if the county is in such a dire financial position as they suggested in their q1 report there’s no reason it should be happening. Baffling not a single county council membered asked how are we paying for these positions?

David was the Administrator? Really

Yes he was for awhile when Premier first began to manage Gracedale.

Holland has more understanding of Gracedale management in his ear wax than TZ will ever obtain.

Tara we know you from several elections ago but you probably don’t remember us. You ran for another office but could not understand why we wouldn’t vote for you even when we referenced our yard signs. We still would not vote for you lfor the same reason. Think
COVID, Tara, when you marched down streets looking for votes. It was your equivalent of door knocking we suppose.

Anyone has more of an understanding than TZ..

The best was her stunt in front of the Bethlehem Post Office- I almost called 911, since I thought someone was tripping!

Beware of what you vote for. The voters spoke and Tara won.
Unfortunately, her past actions and loud, but hollow verbal skills,
drowned out the fact that she just
is not qualified to manage a county of our size and multiple levels of responsibility.

County Executive Observation:
Minimizing and hiding problems from public view, yes.
Overreaching on her expectations, yes.
Maximizing her exposure while minimizing and hoping the issues will go away, yes.
Receiving a passing grade on her performance thus far, Incomplete.

I've been impressed by Zrinski up until this latest meeting. I am unsure whether she hid anything or when she herself knew about the provisional II, but she certainly attempted to minimize a serious problem. Basically, the DOH considers it the worst home in the state. There is no single root cause. Lax admissions might be one of them, but so is the administration of the facility as well as the reliance on agency nursing. So is the refusal to modernize the facility as the letter from an honest DON reveals.

Time to wake up and smell Tara’s coffee, DoH.

Not impressed with council or Tara. This blog has been the only informed source on Northampton County concerns and what Tara and the council are doing.
It’s time for a viable and real response to our communities.
