America at 250

Blogger's Note: Oliver Kornetzke, who wrote the essay I publish below, is a political commentator whose substack is located here. He has a rather damning indictment of this country on the eve of our 250th.

250 years. Two hundred and fifty fucking years of the most powerful, most resourced, most theoretically capable nation in the history of human civilization and here is what we have to show for it.

Forty million people on food stamps, thirty million without health insurance, the highest maternal mortality rate in the developed world, the highest incarceration rate on earth, an opioid crisis that has killed over half a million people and counting, a housing market so broken that working people cannot afford to live in the cities they work in, an education system that buries young people in debt before they earn their first dollar, infrastructure that is literally collapsing, a life expectancy that is going backwards, a political system so thoroughly purchased by concentrated wealth that the laws it produces bear almost no relationship to what the public actually wants or needs, a working class that has not seen meaningful real wage growth in thirty years, a mental health crisis so severe we normalized it, a gun violence epidemic so routine we don’t even act when preschoolers are slaughtered, and a climate hurtling toward catastrophe while the people paid to address it collect checks from the industry causing it.

Two hundred and fifty years of that. And to celebrate, we built a wrestling arena on the White House lawn.

Not a hospital, or a school, or a housing development. Not a single fucking thing that addresses a single goddamn item on the list above. A wrestling arena. With cranes and pyrotechnics and a steel arch that probably cost more than the annual budget of three rural counties combined, erected in front of the building where Lincoln and Roosevelt and every president who ever tried to make any of this mean something once lived and worked and in some cases died trying.

Truthfully, this is not a departure from American values. This is the fullest possible expression of them. Because this is what we chose. Every single time the choice was presented.

We built a culture where a football coach makes forty times what a physics professor makes and then express genuine bewilderment at the outcomes. Where a reality television star becomes president and a school district cuts its art program in the same fiscal year. Where children know every statistic of every player on their favorite sport team and cannot locate their own country on a map. Where scientific consensus on vaccines, climate, evolution, and basic nutrition gets weighed against a Facebook post and the Facebook post wins at the dinner table. Where the school that wins the state championship gets a parade and the school that produces a Nobel laureate gets a budget cut.

We chose the bomber over the teacher. The tank over the clinic. The aircraft carrier over the water treatment plant. We spend more on military than the next ten countries combined, including our allies, while veterans sleep on the streets of the cities they came back to. We built the most expensive killing apparatus in human history and then told the nurse she made too much money. We sent young men to die in wars that made defense contractors rich and called it freedom and put a yellow ribbon magnet on the back of the car and called that support. We made the soldier and the police officer into sacred untouchable symbols of national identity and then cut their benefits, denied their PTSD claims, let them die waiting for VA appointments, and sent them back for third and fourth tours because it was cheaper than taking care of them when they came home. We worshipped the uniform and neglected the human inside it because the uniform is a symbol and symbols are cheaper than healthcare and housing and the therapy that would actually help. We built bases in a hundred and fifty countries and could not build enough affordable housing in fifty states. We funded a military budget that could have ended homelessness and medical debt and student debt several times over and we did it with bipartisan enthusiasm and called the people who questioned it unserious.

We chose entertainment over education so many times and for so long and at every available level of society that we forgot there was a distinction worth making. Spectacle over substance, performance over policy, the aesthetics of greatness in place of the actual thing, and the feeling of winning instead of asking what was being won and who was paying for it and what it would cost the people who came next.

Rome had bread and circuses. We Americans have food stamps and a wrestling ring outside the Oval Office.

250 years. This is what we built. This is what we chose. This is what we are celebrating. And the most perfectly, catastrophically, irreducibly American thing about all of it is that anyone pointing at this image and asking what it means will be called unpatriotic by people watching it on a television they bought on credit they cannot afford to pay back, rooting for a sport they cannot explain, in a country they cannot describe, celebrating a birthday they cannot contextualize, for a nation that has spent two and a half centuries confusing the noise it makes with the work it never did, all while claiming to be the greatest country on Earth.

Happy Birthday America! You have never looked more like yourself!"

Disappointing you would publish such garbage. Maybe you should publish all the foreigners here for the World Cup praising all we have in America. Anyone can complain, that's the easy part. My question is what has the author done to make it better?

Bernie O'Hare said...

What he's done is draw your attention to what is wrong.

Best article I read from you. Well done.

I immediately recognized what this writer is attempting to do. That is, to place all of an our nation’s ills onto just recent times.

More specifically, the prominence he placed (pounced) on just one of MANY 250th celebratory events on the schedule. There have been dozens of such events, including very solemn and respectful gatherings in appreciation of outstanding achievements over time.

Unfortunately, writing about those other tributes doesn’t bring the same amount of ammunition to the FOOLS who lament how better it would be residing someplace other than in America . . . . all the while living right here, of course. Hypocrites, one and all.

This is yet one more poorly shrouded hit piece on the Trump Administration. Today’s so-called news media, including our lousy Morning Call, has located and lifted several such devious offerings. Well, screw them all! I feel blessed to have been born, and to be living in this exceptional nation. I’m thankful and celebrating.

Disagree? Flights out of here are still open to all, and with realtors available in other nations of preference. So, why wait any longer? Your paradise is waiting for your arrival. Bye, Bye.

The propaganda piece here forgot to mention the temporary arena cost American taxpayers almost nothing. Paramount Pictures paid somewhere between 70-80 million dollars to have it built, erected, and removed with the entire area re-sodded with new turf. Millions and millions across the world enjoyed the event free of charge. They saw a historic, highly spectacular and exciting event full of much more than just an athletic event. All taking place in a dying city (Washington, DC) having first been renovated and cleaned-up by the present Federal administration in office.

Bernie there is much wrong with America today as well as the moral compasses the humans possess in this 250th year of the freedom illusion.

If you are negative and focus on the negative you will find more negative.

As a follow-up, it would be intriguing to see you write a post Bernie, that highlighted the positives and the greatness of this amazing country.

I am certain, if you put your award winning skills into it,that it would be a piece that other outlets would post on their pages.

Just another bleeding-heart liberal garbage spewer who hates the nation he lives off of

Well happy 250th BO. Can you think of anything positive to say?

How....edgy.

A disgusting, one sided, hate filled diatribe. But despite those words, people who actually suffer at the hands of their governments and societies are willing to walk a thousand miles to get here.

You can count on people like the author of this rubbish to shit on America at every turn. I’m sure I know for which political party he supports and votes for.

This country is dividing between two camps and I know which one I stake my tent. I embrace America for its successes and failures and recognize this great plant for its promises and possibilities.

To give yourself a good account of this countries worth, ask yourself what the planet would like without it. 250 years is the blink of a historical eye.

The author is partially right in asserting that we are in a slow decline. I know which side of the philosophical and politely isle is dragging us down; jackasses and not elephants.

Remember, every American not satisfied with this country has the option of walking south and living in the countries from where this hemispheres population flees.

Your first commenter sums it up, can’t see what’s in front of him because he’s in a cult! Guaranteed he’s also a racist bigot! We truly are a screwed up nation…

I add that there has never been a wider gap between the wealthy and the average worker. Never a greater time that schemes and scams abound (most which are legalized stealing in the name of legitimate business practices) So too an ever increasing amount of gun violence .

No matter how great our founding fathers may have attempted to outline how a country should be there is absolutely no way they could ever hope to create a set of laws for a country lacking in morality or ethics amongst it's majority of citizens. That part is up to each of us. Sadly few and fewer seem to wish to attain those values.

Writing the article was the author’s right; publishing it was your choice. True colors exposed on both counts.

This essay is a completely accurate mirror of our country right now but I would guess that the majority of your readers won’t like what they see in the mirror and just keep on telling themselves that everything is ok.

This essay provides the reasons why, in the past 10 years, nobody has wanted to emigrate to the US, and why so many have left our shores to relocate to places that are obviously much better.

Is your cup half full or half empty? This opinion is one opinion dividing us. It is my hope you will print one that shows all the amazing things about our country.

Anonymous said...

We're a real shithole of a country, I guess. It makes you wonder why so many millions chose to come here in the last several years.

Anonymous said...

What absolute drivel.

America is the greatest country in the world, and has freed itself and others across the globe from the grip of tyrants.

Our free market economic system, and the inventions and innovations that come from it, has lifted more people out of poverty - both here and throughout the world - than any system in history.

The trash you print above is nothing more than the usual Leftist crap designed to tear this country down, not to lift it up.

I’ll pass on the class envy the socialists are always selling, and will proudly be flying my American flag. Meanwhile, the author will be probably be burning one somewhere.

BO, what a lazy, dishonest reply to 7:29!

7:29 didn’t say anything about the First Amendment, nor question your right to post it. They didn’t call for the government to somehow censor the author’s original article, or your reposting of it. As a former lawyer, you know this and are trying to deflect 7:29’s point.

They merely pointed out that your DECISION to re-post such rubbish spoke volumes about YOU, and also (likely) showed YOUR true colors.

If 7:29 was mistaken and the reason for your posting the original article is to show how extreme the leftists are and how wrong they are about this country, feel free to clarify YOUR position.

As it is, it comes off as you trying to post an anti-American screed that you’re using to voice your thoughts while hiding behind someone else’s name to give yourself some deniability.

If you believe in what the author wrote, just say it and own it. Don’t hide and obfuscate.

I will put America’s history and record up against any of the socialist utopias in world history that the socialist democrats want to compare us to.

America’s history is one of freedom and lifting people up and out of poverty. The socialist record is filled with pulling everyone down, imprisoning them, or simply rounding people up in death camps and murdering them.

The socialists need to tear us down and tear us apart because we are the only thing that stands between them and their power.

The article reprinted above is a joke at best. At the worst, it’s another lame attempt at subverting the weak-minded in this country.

I don’t eat at restaurants I don’t like. I don’t shop at stores I don’t like. I don’t vote for who I don’t like. I’ve left jobs I didn’t like.

I don’t support what I don’t like and distance myself from it, and would suggest to any American who shares the authors views that they embrace my approach by distancing themselves from this failed nation with their feet.

Don’t like it, leave it.

In other words…..GTFO!

Other nations would embrace the ever growing lazy, lame, and incompetent American demographic that sucks the blood out of this great nation by producing nothing yet demanding everything.

LVCI - I would argue that the poor of a nation have never had it so well. In this country, almost all have cell phones, large screen TV’s and other things that are middle to upper class luxuries in other countries.

As to your complaint about gun violence, I would argue that most of it is centered in the socialist/democrat utopias in this country, where laws are often ignored in the name of “equity” and other such nonsense. Many of those cities are also responsible for the largest gaps “between the wealthy and the average worker” (as you put it).

Maybe the REAL problem is the “solutions” being promoted in those areas are flat-out wrong.

I know it might be difficult for you to believe, but maybe the actual results of socialist democrats don't live up to the promises they make.

Who would have thought?

Anonymous said...

This is a radical left-wing piece of shit just like you Bernie.

What a false narrative here!! We literally have been swamped by both legal and illegal immigrants for the last 10 years. I recently interacted with soccer fans from Serbia and Scotland and they loved their visit here. You are part of the problem, not the solution.

You must have missed our southern border flooded with illegal immigrants “migrants” trying to flee the socialism that is the majority of the democrat party now.

Nor do Republicans for that matter either. This of which I speak is neither towards Democrats nor Republicans but rather addressing human values. Not just us in the U.S. but the world which seems to lack as such. Don't expect me to play along with your partisan political games. Perhaps you ought to read what I wrote again. It had nothing to do what your trying to make it out to be (a political talking point). Seems to me everyone would want to solve the issues I spoke about. Even you.

Should have never abolished slavery...That's when America started going downhill honestly.

The communism slowly creeping into America began in earnest with the election of Barack Obama. Now, the door is being opened wider, especially in California and New York, by the Democrat/Socialist Party. Sorry, can’t blame this one on Donald Trump.

Just more liberal propaganda.

People love to complain. The federal, state, and local governments are all hiring. If you are having a tough time go apply they’ll hire you. 4.3 % unemployment historically is really low. Full employment. People bitch about “affordability” but the airplanes and restaurants are full. No one man, not even Trump, can “ruin” America. Just because you’re born in America doesn’t mean you’re entitled to a middle class life, you have to go get it! There are so many opportunities out there! We have become a nation of entitled idiots who think they should have everything for nothing.

Anonymous said...

The standard bearer of that entitlement mentality that’s bringing this nation down is the current Democrat Party. No doubt about it. Consider this next time you vote.

Trump is pushing the deficit to new heights, again.
Trump has ceded entire industries to China.
Trump is running the federal government as if it were a family business.
Trump babbles and lies daily.
Sleep on, Big Don.

The authors words would have been substantially truer in June of 2022 when the inflation rate was at 9.1%, gasoline averaged $5.01 per gallon, the Biden administration was allowing 3 million immigrants per year to enter and remain here illegally, and BLM riots were burning our cities.

Quick Google search:
"Finland is considered to have the happiest citizens in the world, having held the number one spot in the UN-backed World Happiness Report for nine consecutive years. The rest of the Nordic region—including Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway—consistently dominate the top rankings. The World Happiness Report bases its rankings on self-reported life evaluations from citizens in over 140 countries. Why the Nordic Countries Rank So HighRather than measuring fleeting joy, the report measures general life satisfaction based on six key variables:
Strong Social Support: Citizens feel they have people to count on in times of trouble.Institutional Trust:
Low levels of corruption and high faith in public services.Personal Freedom: The ability to make independent life choices.
Generosity: High rates of charitable donations and helping strangers.
Health & Income: High healthy life expectancy and stable per capita GDP."
Although a further search on whether the country is considered "Socialist" or not, there are many factors that coincide with Socialism:
"It operates a free-market capitalist economy paired with a robust social safety net, a system frequently referred to as the Nordic Model.Key features of this system include:
Private Enterprise: The means of production (businesses and resources) are predominantly privately owned, with a highly competitive corporate sector.Extensive Welfare:
The state leverages progressive taxation to heavily fund universal public services, such as free education, comprehensive healthcare, and a strong social safety net.Mixed Economy: It functions as a blend of capitalism and public welfare, which is fundamentally different from a socialist state where the government owns the means of production"
When I hear someone immediatly disparage any type of socialist government I don't think they realize the things that includes, such as:
Social Security
Medicare
Armed Forces
Public Roads
Sewage
Fire and Police Dept. etc., etc.
People who want nothing socialized and wish to have everything based on capitilism better be prepared to pay tolls to drive privately owned roads, pay for fire trucks that show up at their houses, along with a private protection agency to protect their property, along with where there going to dump their waste.
Those calling any type of socialsim as communism just to scare the ill-informed is pathetic and used by those who are either ill-informed or those who would knowingly use a smear tactic to instill fear for their own agenda of greed and power.

1:30 pm - Really? The Armed Forces, sewage systems and Police & Fire Departments are examples of socialism?

You’ve obviously been educated in the public school system and get your news from the cows at The View.

Maybe you should let your socialist buddies know that the police are creations of socialism. Then they can blame themselves for whatever complaints they have against law enforcement.

Anonymous said...

What’s holding you back from moving to Finland?

Anonymous said...

LVCI - You talk about addressing “human values”, yet your empty complaints to foster class envy mirror the talking points of those who want to undermine and destroy this country, which are the socialists/communists.

Ironically, those with the worst record in human history as far as the “human values” (that you want us to believe you are so concerned about) are socialists and communists.

Also I’m sorry if my stating that the political home of socialists and communists is the democrat party somehow offends you, but that is the reality. Other than Senator Fetterman, please show me the elected democrats speaking out about the socialist/communist infiltration into the democrat party. So it is not some “partisan political game”, as you try to pass it off as being.

If you believe that it is, I’d suggest you try taking an honest look at those you’re standing next to.

You might be surprised, but I doubt it. You likely still believe that the socialists and communists can be used to further your political goals, instead of seeing that in reality you are being used for theirs.

I apologize for commenting so late on this article. It is an excellent description of what is wrong. But, in that document that we are going to celebrate in a few days, replete with its original sin of slavery, and references to the "native savages," there is a shining light of hope. That hope is the collective judgment of our people -- not the cultists who blindly follow Trump, or the icons of the far left -- but those who believe in dialogue and an exchange of ideas. The framers wrote the 1st Amendment to protect the rights of all of us to hear different ideas. The marketplace of ideas is the bast place to develop public policy. That's why pluralism is so important. No one group has all of the right answers. WE NEED TO SPEAK WITH THOSE WHO WE DO NOT AGREE WITH. I enjoy verbally sparing with Bernie's "evil Republican brother" at Lehigh County Commissioners' meetings. Prior to Trump hijacking the Republican party as his own cult of personality, there was a republican philosophy which needs to be heard as much as my Democratic philosophy. It is probably best exemplified by the Lehigh Valley's own Charlie Dent. If there is something to celebrate at age 250, it is the hope , derived from the age of enlightenment, that people of differing viewpoints can get together and make the best sausage possible.

Call me an optimist if you like. Guilty as charged.
