Unofficial Election Results - Dems Sweep Northampton County Races!

All Democrats running for county seats in Northampton County have prevailed. This is what the unofficial election results show as of about 10 pm on election night. There were 61,339 in-person votes and 28,587 provisional ballots cast, and turnout was 39.2%, substantially higher than the 32.5% turnout in the municipal election four years ago. This Democratic victory mirrors what has happened in New Jersey, Virginia, Georgia and New York City. Democrats have kept their majority on the Pa. Supreme Court as well. Though this is a municipal election, appears to be an indication that voters are unhappy with the course changes made by Republicans and Donald Trump on a national level.

It's a pretty clear message to Trump even though his name appeared on no ballots. Voters appear to be concerned about his expansion of executive power. They support the removal of illegal immigrants who have committed crimes, but do not support the tactics used by the cowboys with ICE against people who might be here illegally but are working hard.  They appear to be uneasy about the federal government shutdown, which has led to a suspension of SNAP.  They appear to be unhappy about the state shutdown, which has made it more difficult for Pennsylvanians with limited incomes to get to and from work. Ironically, this Democratic victory comes despite a recent poll reporting that 68% of Americans saying that Democrats are "out of touch."

In NorCo, it was an uneventful race. Yes, there were some problems with mail-in ballots for one Easton City Council race. Yes, there is an unresolved dispute over the ballot configuration for cross-filed candidates. But the election itself ran very smoothly. I received only one complaint about the machines throughout the day. The complete results were posted online by 10:30 pm, which might be a county record.

The top vote getter was Democrat Jeremy Clark, who handily defeated Republican James Fuller in the race for judge with 59.7% of the vote. This makes sense because Clark actually practices law in this county and ran a campaign. Fuller practices in Monroe County and was basically invisible

Democrat Tara Zrinski easily beat Republican Tom Giovanni in the Executive contest with 59.03% of the total vote. Zrinski is a seasoned campaigner who was actually able to raise money. This has previously been her downfall. Giovanni, who is admired and respected by both Democrats and Republicans who know him, failed to raise the money needed to reach voters. He also declined to debate Zrinski, which would have helped voters learn more about him.

The Democratic sweep of the County Council races was a shock to me, as I expected John Goffredo and Sam Elias to win. Although the Lamont McClure faction of the Democratic party tried to squeeze Lori Vargo Heffner out, she was the top vote getter (48,658 votes), followed by former Gracedale administrator Dave Holland, Wind Gap Borough Council member Jason Boulette, Hellertown's Theresa Fadem won, despite doing nothing. Nadeem Qayyum came in fifth, even though he is a Democratic socialist and will no doubt try to pursue the same agenda his wife, Taiba Sultana, pushed in Easton..

Republican Sam Elias ran a great campaign but was still 9,000 votes behind the 5th place Dem. Incumbent Council members John Brown and John Goffredo decided to raise no money. That was a mistake. Both were defeated in their bid for re-election.

The votes are still unofficial. I expect formal canvassing of the vote later this week and next week, at which time provisional ballots will be counted if valid.

Democrats now will have a 8-1 advantage in NorCo Council in 2026, which should be smooth sailing for Executive Zrinski.

In the only disputed Easton City Council race, Democrat Julie Zando-Dennis beat Republican Sharbel Koorie, 705 to 384. So even if 48 MIBs were improperly sent, which the elections office concedes is possible, it makes no difference.

In the Nazareth School Board race, Linda Stubits and Wendy Whiteash won seats despite the way their ballots were configured as cross-filed candidates.

Despite what appears to have been a blue wave as the pendulum swings from red to blue, there were Republican victories. Republican Rob Kemmerer defeated Democrat Ellen Kingsley in the Wind Gap area race for magisterial district judge with nearly 60% of the vote. Kemmerer is a former probation officer and had the support of many Democrats.

In heavily Republican areas of the slate belt and northern tier, Republicans still won. Republican Janet Sheats defeated Democrat James Barnes for Supervisor.  Jonathan Erler beat Democrat Courtney Gilmour in Upper Mount Bethel.

Judges Sam Murray and Paula Roscioli were easily retained.

In Lower Saucon Twp, the two Republican pro-landfill expansion candidates, supported by a PAC funded by the landfill ($50,000 in the primary), were defeated by two Democrats. Two Republicans on the Council who voted to expand the landfill two years ago, and who have acted at BOS meetings like total imbeciles since they lost their majority in the last election, likely helped them lose. In Plainfield Township, two anti-landfill candidates defeated a pro-landfill shill who registered as an independent only a few months ago for two seats.

I am happy democrats won in the county. I was unhappy that a person pushing only Zirisnki and Boulette was obnoxious about voting for them. They were not interfering in people going in to vote but it was a disturbing display. I thought the Democrats worked as a team not picking winners and losers. I Knew Zirisnki would win and am glad that Boulete didn't knock off any other democrats. He will likely be the fourth rubber stamp for Zirisnki.

When credible Republican candidates for Council fall to two newcomers who did nothing, the GOP has a huge problem.

This is a Republican pole and a MAGA talking point that is clearly, by yesterday’s results, nonsense

Yeah! Higher taxes, declining cities and paper straws for everyone. What a great election!

This is a dark day for Northampton County and should serve as a warning of what happens when Republicans do not turn out. The consequences of this apathy will last years and equate to turning Northampton County Government into a veritable dumpster fire of liberal insanity. I hope those who claim to embrace Republican ideals but stayed home yesterday reconsider their involvement in future elections.

Holy wingnuts BATMAN. This means there will be no Republicans (at large) representing the crazy man views of Donald Trump. There is a VERY CLEAR MESSAGE from the voters in Pennsylvania. Donald Trump and his MAGGOTS are turning off America's Voters and we are "leading the Country in making America Bright Blue Again.

100% fixed I'm sorry but no way does Nadeem get 40,000 votes, I am a registered dem but no way do any of the numbers add up. People only know who is he is because of his whacked out wife.

Congratulations to both you & Lamont for pushing the most incompetent person for Executive. The Bullhorn will be a disaster for the County, and the Republicans need to run candidates that want to win rather than just litter the area with their signs.

Anonymous said...

Of course, a partisan hack like you would blame Trump- the Republicans deserved to get beat-, with the exception of Elias, most sat on their asses, and did very little outreach.

Anonymous said...

McClure’s Machine, which he inherited from Morganelli, and adapted, is still dominant in Northampton County. If Zrinski can take it over, and blend it with her folks, she’ll be unstoppable.

Anonymous said...

Extremism gets the headlines and clicks, but at the end of the day, Americans want a quiet, efficient government. Both parties tend to look at these election results each cycle as endorsements for their own radical ideas which they then pursue via some imagined "mandate", when the reality is the votes they're getting are protests against the other sides overreach. One of these years, a party will recognize that governing from the center is the least noisy, most efficient way to get things done.

Anonymous said...

Republicans start with a registration deficit, so they must work harder to reach voters. But when you have candidates that decide to raise no money, or skip debates, this is what you get.

Anonymous said...

Jeremy Clark is a GREAT guy. Not a DUMBOCRAT AT ALL, but will be a great Judge!

See ya later Goffredo and Brown, and all the Republican Supervisor and BOE candidates.

Bernie O'Hare said...

I agree with 7:52. I believe it is actually an endorsement for governing from the center. And the votes are being cast by people who know very little about individual local candidates and thus go by what they see happening on a national and state level. And I do not believe this is an endorsement of Dems so much as it is a rejection of extremism by the GOP in Congress and inhestatet

Citizen Sane said...

With that majority, Bullhorn Betty won't have to work to get her agenda through and can use her time and the office of executive as a front in order to campaign for McNure for congress, just like she used the controller's office as a front for her most recent campaign. The stench of corruption, graft, and nepotism fill the air in the county.

Anonymous said...

I agree and appreciate your intelligent comment hopefully we can get back on track for good respectful governance where we can disagree but not become disagreeable

Bernie O'Hare said...

7:38, I did not push anyone for Exec. What I did say is that I thought either would be fine as Exec. I like them both. I did point out that Zrinski had a huge edge in money and, unfortunately, that matters in an election.

Bernie O'Hare said...

6:46, Actually, it is a Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll. Those polled think that Trump and the Rs are out of touch as well, just not as much. And if you fail to grasp this reality or the fact that Ds were clobbered just two years ago, you are in for a rude awakening.

The election is over, so I'm not campaigning anymore. But I'll tell you the same thing now I said before the election: I'm not a rubber stamp. I look at the details on every issue and try to come to the most reasonable decision. But I don't need to convince you now, so you'll see the proof in how I govern.

And to anyone else reading, I encourage you to put little stock in anonymous gossip. Instead, talk to the people who know me. Or even better, reach out and have a conversation with me directly. I'll listen and I'll take what you say seriously.

If someone promoting me yesterday was actually rude to you, I apologize for that. I stood alongside several other candidates yesterday (Daniel, Sam, Lori, Tara) and we all had civil conversations with each other and with the voters.

And I didn't look to bump anyone off. Throughout this campaign, I talked about myself, the skills I'd bring to council, and the things I wanted to focus on. That's it. I'm proud of running a positive campaign.

Take care and get lots of rest. It's been a grueling campaign season.

It is my hope that those who ran and won this election in Northampton County for executive and council realize what they’ve agreed to do; namely, operate this county for every resident, not just their own party. Tara certainly allowed herself to be had with this one. Lamont has left her a mess to clean up and she will have no one on council left with a clue. Oh sure - Lori will still be there and Tom (for awhile not that she will listen to him). David Holland will advise to sell Gracedale since it’s too far gone to salvage (and all will listen to him because “he should know” but doesn’t)what is best. It’s easier to move from a county or state than it is to move from a country. No quitter here but haven’t yet seen what’s coming. Votes matter. Truly will engage with no one who will complain about the financial tsunami mess about to hit Northampton County.

Anonymous said...

Do you only care about outside funding when its a Democrat getting it? There's plenty of dirty payouts going on all over the place in American government and typically one or two per week detailed with Trump, yet you probably dismiss it as "fake news". Hold both parties and all candidates to the same standard, otherwise you're just a cheerleader.

Anonymous said...

This is what happens when a political party hitches its wagon to a cult of personality who appeals to a select segment of voters. They'll turn out when their favorite wrestling superstar is on the card, but won't bother to show up otherwise. Every election cycle since 2016 where Trump wasnt on the ballot the GOP lost ground.

Anonymous said...

He only won because of there being 5 dems for 5 seats, and people voting straight D tickets. It didn't really matter if it was him or someone else on the ballot.

If I ever run for office, I want to do it when Tara is running for office because Tara is a winner and also one of the best campaigners I’ve ever seen. If she’s on the ballot, all Democrats are going to win.

Lehigh County experienced a Blue Blowout.
Sure Allentown voters elected all Democrats, but Dems also won all Supervisor/ Commissioner races in South Whitehall, Upper Saucon, Lower & Upper Macungie and all school director races at East Penn, Parkland & Southern Lehigh school boards. This is quite amazing that these affluent, mostly white soccer mom types went in and voted straight ticket Democrat. Its surprising to me that so many Dems even ran in these races at all. A very interesting development that will not go unnoticed by the new County Executive. Perhaps the political climate is ripe for integrated regional public schools and affordable housing in Lehigh County's suburbs???

I think Jason hit the nail on the head here, Let this group govern, they all ran to do what is best for the county and the taxpayers. Remember the only tax increase you had was from John Brown, Glenn Geisinger, Hayden Phillips and the others who ran as T.E.A. party members then morphed into MAGA buffoons. John Brown deserved to lose as he did nothing, Goffredo on the othe hand tried but sealed his fate when he picked up his books and ran out because he was stopped by LVH from berating a contractor over and over again. I say good riddance to these two clowns and lets hope the Majority of 8 can all get along and govern for the people and not for themselves

There is a reason the Democrats color is Blue: it encompasses sadness and is the color when their policies place a stangle hold on the people they are suppose to represent and actually end up hurting and killing them. Sorry socialism, communism fails all the time.

I am putting out immense prayers for NorCo as Zrinski is about power and control under the auspices of caring about others.

Anonymous said...

I thought the NC Republican Party was in shambles before- thanks to losers like Brown & Flowers- it's now on the verge of Extinction!

Vladimir Ill-itch said...

The five Democrats who won council seats owe their win to Zrinski. They should buy some solar panels from her or donate to her 2030 US Senate campaign as gratitude. She was campaigning for herself, yes, but she had to be putting plugs in for the council candidates as a bloc. Duh! She needs them as her rubber stamps! But, as some have expressed here, all five Democrats winning seems to be a statistical outlier; especially given some of the pathetically week candidates on that slate.

Not until the data is in, that doesn’t get reported by the county in the file you’ll see on the website with the results. I’d say we had a slight gain to 30k or so Republicans show up and maybe independents went up to 10k this year a very decent gain and well over 40k Dems showed up maybe closer to 45k or even higher. From the results around the county it looks like both sides areas showed up stronger, Rs had strong showings in the slate belt and Dems in the 22 corridor. Look at the Bethlehem SB results 16k votes for the Dems on the at large seats! In 23 the top vote getter Dem had 12k that’s how this got so lop sided.

I'm an enthusiastic Dem, but am disappointed Juan Martinez didn't win a spot. I've enjoyed his columns about his business energy and advice to entrepreneurs, would have liked to see his viewpoint in NorCo.

With the exception of Elias & Campo, I didn't see any of the Republicans. Their idea of campaigning was a meet n greet, and a Cigar Party. In fact 2 candidates raised no $, just brilliant in Dem. County. No outreach, while the Dems were everywhere. They didn't deserve to win. I hope we've seen the last of Brown & Co., since they've destroyed the Party.

Other than Elias, Republicans were outworked by Dems.
