It's possible to keep a secret in Northampton County, but never for very long. I first heard yesterday that meth had been discovered in the well of Courtroom No. 1, near the jury box. The only people who sit there are lawyers and an occasional probation officer. I contacted Sheriff Richard Johnston to find out if what I had been told is rumor. It is unfortunately true. It is even more unfortunate that there's been no real investigation.
August 8 was arraignment day in Northampton County. On that day, many criminal defendants walk into the courtroom, but are directed alongside one side of the room to the benches behind the well of the court. Inside that well, and on the opposite side of where the public enter and exit, is the jury box. Attorneys sit there. The public is barred from the well and especially the jury box
Before arraignments got underway on August 8, "Boomer" (a K-9 with the Sheriff's office) and a Deputy searched the area for explosives and found nothing. According to the Sheriff, they also looked for contraband, although Boomer has no training yet in drug detection. This was at 7:45 am.
After the morning arraignments, Courtroom 1 was searched again at 12:45 am. This is when a Deputy observed a small glassine envelope containing a clear glassy substance, along with a pack of rolling papers. This was near the jury box, where only attorneys and an occasional probation officer sit.
The Sheriff's Department reviewed a video of the area and was unable to pinpoint anything conclusive because of the location and pedestrian traffic in that area, which gets heavy as numerous lawyers move around.
The substance was field-tested and determined to be methamphetamine.
According to the Sheriff, the DA's office was informed "of the circumstances and the lack of a suspect" and then the suspected meth was destroyed.
This was news to the actual DA, who knew nothing about the incident.
I believe there are suspects and they consist of every lawyer who was in the well of the court that day, particularly those who were in the jury box. I am even told that some lawyers can name the lawyer who dropped his meth bag. An investigation is difficult now because the meth has been destroyed. What's unfortunate is that a local lawyer using meth is a problem, both to his clients and himself. What the Sheriff's office did just enabled a probable addict.

Be real! the only way that stuff gets destroyed is if it is ordered to be destroyed. The Courtroom, lawyers, etc...
This was made to go away. Anyone else and someone would be in trouble. It is and always has been an insiders game in the Peoples Republic of Northapton County.

Exactly what i thought. Whoever left it was already fingerprinted for their crime.
Best to destroy evidence before the investigation is complete. Maybe video should be reviewed or was that also destroyed
Wow sounds like a cover up.....or incompetence. Also, can an explosives detection dog be a drug detection dog. That sounds like overload for the poor dog. Is the dog a union member and does the dog have to walk on egg shells like the deputes?
This is a dog bites man story. We're talking about lawyers, here. These ain't exactly model citizens.
I don't think explosives detection dogs can be effectively cross trained for narcotics detection. If so, they're rare.
Another theory - client gave meth to lawyer to “dispose” of for him/her fearing a search of defendants entering courthouse and betting lawyers wouldn’t be searched? Ethical nightmare if true, but also now apparently a moot point.
Is anyone surprised that a lawyer could be a drug user, you have to be kidding.

I think the judges using that courtroom should be raising hell over no follow up investigation with testing unless it was one of their buddies! I am pretty sure the guilty one has already has his/her name mentioned in quiet whispers. Maybe soon someone will be taking a needed quietly arranged "leave of absence."
Reportedly was an immigration lawyer who is no stranger to controversial situations including one a few years ago where another attorney passed away in his office.
Yeah. Whatever happened to the lawyer who died in the other lawyer's office? That story was kept hidden. Journalism's job is to cover stories like a blanket - until they stop breathing. Best place to get away with criminal activity is at the courthouse, apparently.

If it was Ritalin or Adderall there wouldn't be a fuss...and now that it has been destroyed we won't know if was the street form and not just a crushed Adderall.
Drugs are held behind private paywalls enforced by the government, to be obtained only through the proper organized syndicates that own the legal language and give the same pharmacologic drug legitimacy.
A small amount of this drug being found in a courthouse is nothing compared to the amount being passed out to children in almost every school, or the amount being used by law students to get through law school.
Maybe it was the tip staff that was recently let go?
